The PI was involved in setting up the CIRG in 1999. Since then it has amassed in excess of 140 peerreviewed publications in the areas of Information Retrieval, Collaborative filtering, Machine
learning, Evolutionary Computation and Evolutionary Game Theory.
Title & brief description of PhD project (suitable for publication on web):
Title: Movie recommendations that match or change your mood.
Description: This project will use sentiment analysis techniques in two ways to produce a set of
personalised movie recommendations. Firstly, sentiment analysis techniques will be used to find the
‘mood’ of a person based on a recent time slice of their social media interactions. Secondly
sentiment analysis techniques will be used to find the ‘mood’ of movies based on reviews of the
movies in online repositories. Matching techniques will be used to match, positively or negatively,
the person’s mood with that of a movie’s mood. A set of recommendations will be produced from
this which will be categorised according to mood. For example, some movies may be categorised as
matching the ‘mood’ of a person while some other movies may be categorised as ones which are
likely to change the mood of the person.

For this project, the PI and CIRG group have experience in the domain of sentiment analysis and recommender
systems. The University boasts an International Office to assist international students and offers structured
PhD programmes where students can support their research through related taught modules.
