improving quality, enhance predictability and saving
resources (money, time and materials) during each phase
of a facility's life cycle
buildingSMART international
Member based and not for profit organization.
Focus at developing, promoting and deploying open
international BIM standards for the building industry.

buildingSMART vision
Improving communication, productivity, delivery time, cost,
and quality throughout the whole building life cycle
buildingSMART mission
To bring coordinated change for the improvement of
productivity and efficiency in the construction and facilities
management industry.
Facilitate an arena for the industry to become more innovative
and work smarter
buildingSMART goal
Building on the collective knowledge of the global construction
and facilities management industries to define and use open
BIM standards for interoperability
What is BIM and buildingSMART?
BIM = Building Information Model (data model)
BIM = Building Information Modeling (process)
BIM = Building Information Management
buildingSMART = BIM using open standards
buildingSMART open international
standards
 Develop and maintain open international standards
for Building Information Modeling (open BIM)
 Collaborates with international and national
standardization bodies

data exchange
 IFC is the source of all technical specifications
 IDM (Information Delivery Manual) is the source of user requirements
 MVD (Model View Definition) is the subset of IFC to satisfy particular
exchange requirements

BIM data model (IFC)
buildingSMART has developed a common data schema
that makes it possible to hold and exchange relevant data
between different software applications.
The data schema comprises interdisciplinary building
information as used throughout it's lifecycle.
The format for Open BIM is called IFC
Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), it is registered by ISO as ISO/PAS 16739
Industry Foundation Classes (IFC)
• IFC is the complete and fully stable standard for exchanging
BIM data
• IFC is the foundation for open, cross disciplinary use of BIM

buildingSMART ME
• buildingSMART ME is a regional alliance covering Middle East,
North Africa and India, launched November 2009
• Objectives
– Surveying the Construction Sector to understand use of BIM
– Raising Awareness of buildingSMART and in particular, BIM
– Showing Direction as a neutral body, guiding businesses
through the necessary change.
– Providing education to meet skill requirements
– Developing Standards appropriate to regional needs
– Providing a support Mechanism for Implementation – BIM
Support Bureau, bridging the gap between theory and practice
buildingSMART MENA & India
• Members include
- Software Vendors
- BIM Service Providers
- Leading Consultants
and Contractors
- Universities and
Educational Partners
- Leading
publications/Media
Houses
- Government
buildingSMART ME
Survey 2011
• Rationale for Survey
– For better understanding
of market, relating to BIM,
understanding, capability
and barriers to adoption.
– Respondents from
consultants, contractors,
FM providers, government
organizations, Regulatory
authorities , suppliers and
owners.
buildingSMART ME
Survey 2011
• Key Findings
Respondents
– 21% not familiar with BIM – unable to
complete survey
– 54% identified themselves as non-BIM
users (although in some cases they had
exposure and even training )
– 25% were self-defined BIM users.
– Mostly ‘beginner level’ – deploying BIM
only for Visualization, ill-equipped to use
more advanced BIM processes
– Consultants and Contractors accounted
for highest number of BIM users.
– Developers recorded highest percentage
of BIM users within their sector.
buildingSMART ME
Survey 2011
• Key Findings
– Drivers
• 59% of respondents agreed that if BIM were mandated on projects,
they would be more likely to use BIM
• 57% agreed “Availability of Industry Standards” was necessary to
drive Adoption
• 56% agreed that availability of skilled professionals was important.

buildingSMART ME
Survey 2011
• Survey Conclusions
– The Region is behind in the adoption of BIM
– Governments in the region need to encourage the industry to
adopt BIM
– The industry must seek to raise general capabilities
– Educational Institutions should be encouraged to be at the
forefront.
