Camtasia for Windows allows you to quickly create screen videos to show
desktop activity. You can capture and edit anything you see on your PC screen,

Camtasia is a bundle of two separate programs - Camtasia Recorder to record
videos of Windows desktop activity and apply real-time effects and Camtasia
Producer - a non-linear editor that can produce standard AVI files or streaming

TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC), a unique video codec optimized for
recording screen activity. Finished videos can be distributed via CD-ROM or
located on a file server and streaming formats can be accessed via Intranet or

Perfect Quality High Performance Video Compression
Camtasia includes TechSmith's own Screen Capture Codec (TSCC), providing
lossless image quality coupled with excellent compression ratios. Since the
TSCC is lossless, it preserves 100% of the image quality, even through multiple
decompression/recompression cycles that are typical during the production
process. Compression is an important issue when capturing screen images, as
even a few minutes of recording part of a screen without compression will create
a file larger than the capacity of a CD-ROM.1 The TSCC is optimized for screen
capture so that the resulting files are small and highly compressed.
The compression codec also affects the capture frame rate or speed of
compression. The high frame rates required for smooth video increase the need
for high compression speed. High color screens also impact compression speed.
The TechSmith codec offers exceptional compression speed at all color depths unlike, for example, some codecs that only support 8-bit color (The Microsoft
RLE codec is lossless but is restricted to 8-bit color).2
Even codecs that are more widely distributed do not perform as well as the
TechSmith codec to deliver the highest quality, smallest file size and fastest
compression speed.

When a video is compressed with TSCC, anyone wishing to view the movie must
have TSCC installed on his or her computer. There are no charges, royalties or

videos with Camtasia. You can still change the codec later, in Camtasia

V. Camtasia Recorder
Camtasia's VCR-style interface makes it incredibly easy to use. Simply access
Camtasia's Quick Help under the Help menu item and you are "walked through"
the process, eliminating any perceived learning curve.
To make a video using Camtasia Recorder, first you select what you would like to
"Input" - defining the area of the desktop Camtasia will record. Camtasia allows
you to capture exactly the part of the screen you want to include in your video.

Capture
Single Frame capture mode grabs one frame at a
time. Use the record button like a camera shutter
button to capture frame-by-frame. Single Frame is
useful to create a slide show style movie.
Quick Capture
Quick Capture speeds up the frame rate for capture,
making cursor movements smoother on slower
sytems. This setting is ideal for situations where you
have a lot of cursor movement without much
background change. Capture frame rates are
increased by as much as 2 to 7 times using Quick

Recorder with the needs of TechSmith's
target audience in mind. Developers of
documentation and desktop based
presentations can use both tools to quickly
create AVI or streaming formats from a
collection of video clips, narration and audio
clips.

to produce CD-ROM training for
staff, dealers, representatives

Camtasia Producer is especially helpful when creating longer productions

File Formats and Sharing Camtasia Videos
After using Producer, you can save your work as a Project File or as a new
movie. A Project File allows you to maintain project information to rebuild video
productions. The final product may be saved as a standard AVI, animated GIF,
Microsoft Advanced Streaming Format (ASF), Microsoft Windows Media Video
(WMV) format, Apple QuickTime video (MOV), RealNetworks RealMedia (RM)
format or Camtasia RealPlayer Plugin (CAMV). For AVI, the Producer defaults to
the TechSmith video codec but allows selection of any available video and audio
codec that supports recording as well as playback.
NEW - With Camtasia RealPlayer Plugin, Camtasia delivers lossless
compression and lossless streaming video that plays back at high quality in
RealNetwork's RealPlayer. Producer supports RealPlayer as an output file format
(CAMV). This option provides high quality lossless video compression at a
relatively low bandwidth in the Real environment.

The plugin decodes and renders the video
stream in the RealPlayer window. The plugin
is auto-downloaded by RealPlayer using the
Real AutoUpdate service. If the Camtasia for
Real movie has an audio track, it will be
encoded as a RealMedia/RealAudio file and
streamed in sync with the Camtasia for Real
video stream by a .SMIL file.
NEW - To further expand Camtasia's
shareability and use of industry-standard
formats, Camtasia can output and produce
QuickTime videos (MOV). QuickTime is
Apple's multi-platform, industry-standard,
multimedia software architecture.
Try being the owner of a firm
that makes software for
companies whose employees
know little about computers.
For FraXis CEO Shawn Park,
that meant producing a detailed
400-page manual (but he still
received hundreds of expensive
800 number support calls).
Then he started using
Camtasia for tutorials that ship
with his software. Camtasia
was his "lifesaver". Now,
customers and his technical

support call charges.
Many codecs developed by other companies
are proprietary. The TSCC, however, is
included with Camtasia and is freely
distributable. When a video is compressed with TSCC, users who wish to view
the movie must have TSCC installed on their computer. With Camtasia
Producer's Pack and Show feature, your movies are easily accessible to your
viewers. Pack and Show converts a Camtasia movie into an executable file so
users can easily install the TechSmith codec to view the movie with the same
high resolution you see when making the video file. Videos encoded with the
TechSmith video codec can be played with any standard media player, including
Camtasia Player - the uncomplicated AVI player that runs on any 32-bit Windows
platform, so no special software is required. Pack and Show may also reduce the
file size to be distributed, without affecting movie quality. For example, when the
movie contains uncompressed audio, the audio quality will not be affected by
packaging.
Try Camtasia Player - it not only guarantees high quality playback of AVI movies,
but it is designed to be as easy to use as possible. This standalone movie player
also plays movies back at 100% of their original size so they always remain
readable. The Player is a single .EXE file that needs no setup, and it runs on any
32-bit Windows platform, with no dependencies on runtime libraries, OS version
or DirectX. Some media players are seen as entertainment portals and are
disallowed in the workplace. The small, lightweight Camtasia Player plays only
AVIs and is useful in any environment.
For TSCC compressed content delivered on the Internet, an ActiveX control is
available that can be embedded in a Web page to automatically install the
TechSmith codec when a user lands on the page using the Microsoft Internet
Explorer web browser. This very small control checks if TSCC needs to be
installed or updated and if so, automatically downloads and installs it.
Camtasia Producer offers several file format output options. Choose a file format
based upon how you intend to distribute the recording.

Do I need a CD-ROM?
It is not necessary to purchase a CD-ROM of SnagIt during registration.

your hard drive, we recommend keeping the SnagIt install .exe download and a
copy of your registration information (reginfo.txt) at another location. Please let

Just download and install the new version over your existing copy. Do not
uninstall your registered version!

To upgrade:
1. Download and install the latest version of Camtasia.

2. Open Camtasia.
3. From the Help Menu, select Register Camtasia.
4. On the first Registration screen, select I want to purchase and click
[Next].
5. On the following Registration screen, select I want to purchase via
phone, fax or e-mail. and click [Next].
6. On the third Registration screen, click the [Order Form] button. A form
will pop up.
7. Fill out all of your contact information, and click [Next] when you are
ready to continue.
8. A dialog will pop up telling you where Camtasia has saved your order
form. Read the dialog and be sure to write down where your order form
was saved, just in case! Then click [OK].
9. Your order form, with contact information already completed, should
automatically open in Notepad.
10. Complete the order form with your upgrade order information. The cost of
a single-user upgrade key is $79.95.
11. You can submit the order form electronically by e-mailing it to
sales@techsmith.com. We will send you your upgrade key via the
method you have selected on your order form as soon as possible.

Input defines the area of the desktop Camtasia will record. Four options
provide the flexibility to capture exactly what part of the screen you want
to include in your video.
❍ Screen captures the entire computer desktop area.
❍ Window changes the cursor to a finger used to point to the
window to be captured.
❍ Region changes the cursor to a crosshair pointer to define a
region of your desktop.
❍ Fixed Region sets a specific region in pixels.
Output tells Camtasia where to send the images you are capturing with
the Recorder.
❍ File saves your screen recording to an industry standard AVI file.
The AVI files you create with Camtasia can be imported, edited,
etc. in any third party application that supports the AVI format.
❍ Live takes advantage of Camtasia’s advanced Live Output
feature. Rather than saving your screen capture video to a file,
you can send what you capture, as you’re capturing it, in real-time
-- literally sending out a live broadcast of desktop activity.
Camtasia simulates a hardware PC camera and works with
streaming media encoders (Microsoft’s Windows Media Encoder
and RealNetworks’ RealProducer), video conferencing and
webcam applications. Camtasia looks like a standard Video for
Windows video capture device to these applications.
Single Frame capture mode grabs one frame at a time. Use the record
button like a camera shutter button to capture frame-by-frame. Single
Frame capture is useful to create a slide show style movie.
Designed to enhance the quality of your movie, Quick Capture speeds
up the frame rate for the pointer, making cursor movements less choppy

on slower systems. This setting is ideal for situations where you have a
lot of cursor movement without much background change. Capture frame
rates are increased by as much as 2 to 7 times using Quick Capture.
Select Camtasia's Layered Window capture option to make movies that
include translucent and irregular shaped windows that other screencam
apps fail to grab -- like Microsoft Agent animations and translucent
images used during drag and drop.
Create AVI files using any of the standard Windows audio/video codecs,
or our optional TSCC video codec. Camtasia AVI files playback in
standard media players without any plug-ins when standard Windows
audio/video codecs are used.
Audio
Adding your narration to Camtasia videos is fast and easy. Speak into the
microphone while you record your screen capture video, or use DubIt to overlay
and audio track to any AVI file.
Effects
Camtasia’s effects offer configuration flexibility to choose the fonts, colors, size
and appearance that will enhance the professional appearance of your videos.
Effects are easily toggled on and off in the Camtasia Recorder and most allow
you to preview changes before you proceed with your movie making.

ScreenPad adds floating annotations such as graphic shapes and
images like arrows, callout boxes and logos to emphasize specific areas
in your recordings. Simply drag-and-drop objects from the ScreenPad to
your desktop. The annotations will appear to "float" on your desktop and
can be repositioned by clicking and dragging them to a new location.
Create your own annotation objects or import bitmap, gif and jpeg images
to use as shapes. Once you have a collection of shapes positioned on
your desktop, save them as a layout, making it easy to place multiple
ScreenPad objects in one quick step. Create an unlimited number of
custom object and layout libraries.
ScreenDraw allows you to draw on your desktop while you record a
movie. Make your movies lively and easier to understand by underlining,
pointing and illustrating with the freehand draw tool. Annotate the screen
just like television sportscasters!
Add a Time/Date stamp and/or a Caption to your video. The caption will
display for the duration of your movie, while you define the length of time
Camtasia will display the Time/Date stamp (e.g., 5 seconds).
Brand your videos with a custom Watermark, just like the television
networks. You decide whether to overlay, underlay or emboss your
watermark and control its size and position on the screen.
Highlight and AutoHighlight are helpful in drawing the viewer’s
attention to an exact area of the screen. Highlight allows you to select a
window or portion of a window prior to recording. A colored highlight box
will appear around this area in the video. AutoHighlight is similar, except
that rather than staying in one place, the highlight follows the cursor as it
moves across the screen while you’re recording. You can adjust the color
and width of the highlight.
Viewers sometimes find it difficult to find and follow the cursor in a screen
capture video. Cursor Highlight adds effects such as circles, stars,
rings, etc. that will shadow the cursor as it moves across the video and/or
appear when you click the right or left mouse button.
Use Zoom during recording to show more detail on screen or cover more
area. The plus and minus zoom options zoom the capture area in and out
in increments, always maintaining the aspect ratio. The ZoomTo button
will zoom directly to a certain size, or to a specific region, window or the
full screen. The Zoom Undo button reverts back to the last zoom size and
toggles between the last two zoom sizes. AutoZoom allows you to zoom
between two windows, regions, etc., with a smooth, professional
appearance. Camtasia’s AutoZoom automatically pans the area and
zooms in smoothly.
Panning captures a smaller area of the screen where the action is and
ignores the inactive areas. This reduces file size and helps focus the
viewer’s attention. To manually Pan, point to the frame of the defined

capture area and drag it across the screen. AutoPan keeps your cursor
in the center of the capture region and follows the pointer across the
desktop.
Camtasia Producer
Use the Thumbnail File Explorer to easily select the video clip(s) you want to
include in your finished product. Double-click a file thumbnail to bring the clip into
the Editor. You can also drag clips directly into the Storyboard.
The Editor is a viewer and an editor of individual movie clips. You can use the
timeline edit bar and VCR buttons to scan through a clip frame-by-frame, making
it easy to trim AVI clips with accuracy. Or save single frames as a still image -- a
great way to make thumbnail links when sharing your video clips!
The Storyboard contains clips that will go into the final produced movie in the
order in which they appear. You can join any number of clips together by simply
dragging them into the Storyboard. You can even add still images (.BMP, .JPG,
.GIF) to your movies on the storyboard -- a great way to add titles and credits,
or create a slideshow.
Add Transition effects between AVI clips by selecting the clip you want the
transition to lead into. Select from over 78 different transition effects. An arrow
will mark the clips that you have added a transition effect to.
Camtasia lets you save your unfinished work as a Project File, or you may save
your completed work as a new movie. To create a new video from the
storyboard, choose Produce Movie from the file menu. Camtasia Producer
creates standard AVI files, Microsoft ASF, Microsoft WMV, RealMedia and Apple
QuickTime streaming video files, Camtasia for Real Player Plug-In videos, or
animated GIFs. A wizard walks you through all of the possible options for
customizing your movie, including watermarking, frame size, compression and
copyright information then prompts you to save the video.
Videos can be produced using any of the standard Windows audio/video codecs,
standard streaming media audio/video codecs, or our optional TSCC video
codec. Use our TSCC video codec during capture and editing to preserve 100%
lossless quality, even over multiple editing cycles. Play your movies with
Camtasia Player - an easy to use, standalone movie player that guarantees high
quality playback of your AVI movies. Camtasia videos also playback using
standard media players without any plug-ins when standard Windows or
streaming media audio/video codecs are used.
Pack and Show allows you to package your movie and the TSCC codec and/or
Camtasia Player as a Windows-executable file (.exe). When users receive the
.exe file, they simply double-click it to unpack it, install TSCC and/or Camtasia
Player, and show the movie.
There are several advantages to Pack and Show:

Users get everything they need to view a TSCC-encoded movie.

Camtasia Player guarantees high quality playback
The packaging process may reduce the size of files to be distributed
without affecting the movie quality. For example, when the movie
contains uncompressed audio, the audio quality will be unaffected by
packaging.

(TSCC)
When talking about codecs, it's helpful to understand three terms:
Codec is the abbreviation for compressor/decompressor. Codecs are applied to
audio, video and image files to compress their size. The benefit is that the files
don't use as much disk space when stored or as much network bandwidth when
streamed. To open a compressed file, the same codec must be used to
decompress the file.

Compression is the coding of data to reduce file size or the bit rate of a stream.
Lossy is a compression technique that decreases image, audio, or video quality
in order to reduce the file size.
So, the video codec is responsible for compressing the video frames during
recording and for reconstructing the video frames during playback. Often, the
makers of a codec will sacrifice image quality in order to achieve higher
compression and smaller file sizes. These codecs are termed "lossy" and are
incapable of reconstructing the video at its original fidelity. Most commonly
available codecs for recording screen videos are lossy, resulting in screen
capture videos with reduced image quality and a "fuzzy" appearance.
Camtasia includes TechSmith's own Screen Capture Codec (TSCC), providing
lossless image quality coupled with excellent compression ratios. Since the
TSCC is lossless, it preserves 100% of the image quality, even through multiple
decompression/recompression cycles that are typical during the production
process. The TSCC is optimized for screen capture so that the resulting files are
small and highly compressed.
The compression codec also affects the capture frame rate or speed of
compression. The high frame rates required for smooth video increase the need
for high compression speed. High color screens also impact compression speed.
The TechSmith codec offers exceptional compression speed at all color depths unlike, for example, some codecs that only support 8-bit color. (The Microsoft
RLE codec is lossless but is restricted to 8-bit color.)

Options:
TSCC is the default method of compressing/decompressing video in Camtasia
Recorder. While the default codec can easily be changed to any of the standard
Windows codecs, we recommend that you use TSCC when recording your
videos with Camtasia. You can still change the codec later, in Camtasia
Producer.
When a video is compressed with TSCC, anyone wishing to view the movie must
have TSCC installed on his or her computer. There are no charges, royalties or
licensing requirements for distributing movies encoded with TSCC or with
distributing the codec to others for viewing.
Use one of the following methods to share the TechSmith Screen Capture
Codec:

Use Pack and Show to package your video with TSCC to create a single
executable.
●
Distribute a copy of the codec installer, TSCC.exe, which is available on
the Camtasia CD-ROM and on our Web site. Copy TSCC.EXE onto the
same media where your movie distribution resides and either have your
installer run it at installation time or instruct the user to do so.
●
For TSCC compressed content delivered on the Internet, an ActiveX
control is available that can be embedded in a Web page to automatically
install the TSCC codec when a user lands on the page using Microsoft
Internet Explorer web browser. This very small control checks if TSCC
needs to be installed or updated and if so, downloads and installs it.

Camtasia Player is a simple, standalone movie player, optimized for playing
screen recordings. Camtasia Player always plays back movies at 100% of their
original size so that they remain readable. It runs on any 32-bit Windows
platform, with no dependencies on runtime libraries, OS version, or DirectX. The
Player is a single .EXE file that does not need any setup, nor does it use the
registry or any configuration files. Camtasia Player is designed to be as easy to
use as possible. Command line options are provided which allow Camtasia
Player to be invoked in various ways from CD-ROMs, multimedia authoring tools,
and scripting languages or batch files.
Camtasia Player only plays AVI movie files. Any audio or video codecs required
by the AVI file must be installed before Camtasia Player can play the movie. The
basic Windows multimedia support for playing AVI files must be installed.
Camtasia Player does not setup any shell associations to become the default AVI
player. However, this could be setup by an install program that you provide or by
the end user.

The TechSmith Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) must be installed to
play movies encoded with the TSCC video codec. The TSCC video codec
is not installed by default with Windows. However, you can freely
distribute and install the TSCC video codec using the TSCC.EXE codec
installer included with Camtasia.
Basic Windows multimedia and AVI file support must be installed.
The standard Windows MCI Motion Video Device (95/98/ME) or
standard Windows Microsoft Video for Windows (NT/2000/XP). This is
normally installed by default with Windows.
How to Use Camtasia Player
When you launch Camtasia Player, by default it has a title bar, a menu bar, a tool
bar, a status bar. You can customize those elements by specifying arguments on
the command line when launching Camtasia Player. Here is the exact syntax for
the command line arguments:
CAMPLAY [<options>] [<file>]
where <file> is an optional movie file name and <options> is an optional set of
options among the following:
/E - Exits after playing the movie
/F - Launches in Full Screen Mode
/M - Launches without a menu bar
/MX - Launches with its window maximized
/open - Open the specified movie (<file>) but does not play it
/play - Immediately play the specified movie (<file>) [default]
/R - Repeats the movie forever
/S - Launches without a status bar
/T - Launches without a title bar
/TB - Launches without a tool bar

Camtasia
The Camtasia User Interface and toolset were designed from the ground up for
screen video capture and video production. Camtasia includes Camtasia
Recorder, Camtasia Producer, and the TechSmith Screen Capture Codec
(TSCC). SnagIt's video capture provides basic screen video capture in a manner
that is consistent with SnagIt's architecture and purpose. In general, SnagIt's
video capture is appropriate for simple short screen video capture tasks (e.g.
recording how an application fails, or recording a monitoring screen), while
Camtasia is appropriate for larger screen video capture and video production
tasks (e.g. producing training videos or product demos). Camtasia currently
offers a number of feature and performance benefits over SnagIt's basic video
capture.

●
Camtasia Recorder has a customizable interface that can display full
capture properties and statistics during capture, or it can be minimized to
a floating toolbar. Camtasia Recorder has simple mouse driven VCR-like
record/pause/stop controls in addition to hotkey control.
Camtasia Recorder includes the following "in camera" effects:
❍ Cursor and Cursor click highlights
❍ Cursor click and keyboard sound effects
❍ AutoPan
❍ Zoom with "interpolated" smooth scaling
❍ Captioning (with control of text font, color, position, 3D effects)
All effects can be toggled on/off during capture.
Camtasia Recorder performs audio compression using standard Window
audio codecs. Audio recording can be toggled on/off during capture (i.e.
muted). SnagIt is limited to storing audio as an uncompressed PCM
stream. Camtasia also supports the PCM format.
Camtasia includes the Camtasia Producer video production tool.
Camtasia Producer is an easy to use AVI editor that uses a storyboard
metaphor to join AVI files. Features include:

❍ AVI format conversion (e.g. frame rate, color depth, audio/video
codecs)
❍ Audio compression using standard Window audio codecs
❍ "Interpolated" smooth scaling
❍ 78 transition effects
❍ Native RealMedia file production

Camtasia includes the "TechSmith Screen Capture Codec" (TSCC).
TSCC is a Windows video codec optimized for compressing typical officestyle application content. It offers perfect quality (lossless) compression
with exceptional compression ratios and fast compression speed at all
color depths. TSCC is the default video codec used by Camtasia,
although any Windows video codecs may be used. Camtasia achieves
higher capture frame rates and much better compression than SnagIt,
especially on greater than 256 color desktops. The TSCC codec can be
freely distributed to playback AVI and ASF files encoded with TSCC.

Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK - Capture the experience! Add screen recording to your application
onto a form or dialog, or without a form/dialog by creating the control
dynamically. All enumerations and types are built into the ActiveX control.
The ActiveX and DLL components are in a single file and there are no
dependencies on MFC, C runtime libraries, DirectX, OS version or other
resources.
Flexibility
A video frame callback is provided to allow you to filter or redirect the
captured video frames.
You have complete control over all AVI file parameters including
audio/video interleaving, audio and video compression, and AVI playback
frame rate to speed up or slow down playback.
Capture the entire screen or any part of the screen, use the cursor capture
option, and use the complete capture statistics reporting. The capture can
be canceled at any time, and events are available for notification of capture
engine state change and capture errors.
High Performance
The Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK includes advanced "Quick Capture"
and "Event Capture" features to obtain the highest possible capture frame
rates and most efficient use of system resources.
The Quick Capture feature captures the screen as efficiently as possible, at
frame rates from 2 to 7 times faster than normal. This is particularly useful
for capture sequences that feature a lot of cursor movement and not much
other visual change. This allows better recording of cursor movement by not
capturing static areas repeatedly.
Event Capture allows the developer to optimize the use of system resources
during a recording session by only capturing the background screen content
when an event is triggered. Event capture results in smoother cursor
movement and more efficient use of system resources, since the expensive
screen capture operation is only performed when an event is triggered.
Event Capture can even be used to capture a frame at a time to create
"stop-frame animation" video.
The Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK also supports multiple instances
running simultaneously. Multiple instances can be created within a process
or in different processes.
The Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK includes the TechSmith Screen
Capture Codec (TSCC), which is a 100% lossless video codec optimized for
compressing screen video capture content in AVI files. It provides high
performance compression at all screen color depths, and the TSCC video
codec is freely redistributable.
Small and Lightweight
There are absolutely no dependencies on MFC, C runtime libraries, DirectX
or other resources. The recorder DLL/ActiveX control can run on any Win32
platform (Windows 9x/Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000 or later).
The recorder ActiveX control is a completely self-contained 100% ATL
based ActiveX control with all enumerations and types built-in. Instantiate
the ActiveX control dynamically without putting it in a form.
It is written entirely with thread safe code, and any thread can access a
capture instance at any time. The recorder control contains its own worker
threads that operate in the background and asynchronously from the calling
client application.

Development License:
The Development License, $399, allows one programmer to install the SDK
on one computer for use in development of end-user applications. One
single user copy of Camtasia is included with the purchase of a
Development License.
The Development License includes one free Distribution License (i.e. that
ability to deploy an end-user application built with the SDK on one
computer).
Shipping and handling charges will be applied to each purchase of a
Development License.
Volume discounts for additional Development Licenses are available. For
more information, contact screenrecordersdk@techsmith.com.
Distribution License:
A Royalty Free Site License, $2995, is available for distribution of in house
applications. Royalty based licensing is required for distribution of
commercial applications.
The $2,995 site license is a one time fee to deploy one in house end-user
application built with the SDK on any number of computers at a site.
Royalty based licensing is required for distribution of commercial end-user
applications built with the SDK. The royalty based per copy runtime
licensing starts at $75.00 per copy. In lieu of playing $75.00 per copy,
Licensee may pay in advance for its projected runtime licensing needs in

What's a Codec?
What is the TSCC Codec?
And why is it important when you share your videos with others?
Codec stands for compressor/decompressor. A codec is a software
component that translates video or audio between its uncompressed form
and the compressed form in which it is stored, similar to the way .zip
technology compresses and decompresses a file.
The crisp, sharp images produced by the Camtasia SDK are a result of
TechSmith's own Screen Capture Codec (TSCC) - a unique video codec
optimized for recording screen activity. Clips originally compressed with
TSCC preserve 100% of the image quality, even through multiple
decompression/recompression cycles (which typically occur as part of the
editing process and further degrade quality). An added bonus is that the
TSCC provides high performance compression at all screen color depths
and is freely redistributable.
If your application uses the TSCC video codec, you will need to distribute
and install the TSCC video codec, along with your application. If the users
of your application want to distribute their TSCC encoded AVI files, they
may also need to distribute and install the TSCC video codec, so that their
videos can playback on other systems. For this purpose, use the
TSCC.EXE video codec installer found in the SDK's Redist folder. You can
use the "/s" option to silently install the codec (e.g. "TSCC.EXE /s"). Note
that administrator privilege is required on Windows NT/2000 to install a
video codec.
Other methods your users can use to share the TechSmith Screen
Capture Codec:

Distribute a copy of the codec installer, TSCC.exe, which is
available on the Camtasia SDK CD-ROM and on our Web site. Copy
TSCC.EXE onto the same media where your movie distribution
resides and either have your installer run it at installation time or
instruct the user to do so.
For TSCC compressed content delivered on the Internet, an ActiveX
control is available that can be embedded in a Web page to
automatically install the TSCC codec when a user lands on the page
using Microsoft Internet Explorer web browser. This very small
control checks if TSCC needs to be installed or updated and if so,
downloads and installs it.

Applications that create video content need to consider that users may want to
edit their video content and/or convert the content to various formats for
distribution (e.g. compress the audio stream in a video to reduce its size or
encode to a streaming media file format). The Camtasia Screen Recorder SDK
creates industry standard AVI video files encoded with the video and audio
codecs that your application (or your user) chooses. The Camtasia Screen
Recorder SDK does not provide editing or format conversion functionality. If
you need additional editing or conversion functionality, you can use SDKs or
tools from other vendors or you can develop your own.

install the codec (e.g. "TSCC.EXE /s"). Note that administrator privilege is
required on Windows NT/2000 to install a video codec.
Note that the TSCC video codec is not always the best choice for recording
"real world" motion video (e.g. a music video or video conference window),
since it is optimized for recording office-style applications without a great deal
of color gradients. When recording "real world" motion video, the compression
ratio and compression speed may be reduced since more data must be written
to disk. You might need to experiment with different video codecs to find the
codec with the best tradeoff of quality, compression speed and file size.
Note that the audio codec used for compression when creating an AVI file must
also be installed on any system where the AVI file is played. Therefore, it is
often desirable to use audio codecs that are installed by default with Windows
(e.g. PCM, Microsoft ADPCM, GSM 6.10). Also, some Windows audio codecs
may not be available for compression. For example, the Windows Media Audio
codec and the ACELP.net audio codec can only be used for compression of
Windows Media (ASF/WMV) files.

DubIt is a multimedia tool which lets you easily add audio to movie clips and
images. Unlike video editors and presentation authoring products, DubIt adds
audio in real-time as you watch the movie or image. With DubIt, it is easy to
narrate a video clip and synchronize your voice with the video. DubIt is the
perfect tool to quickly add voice annotation and sound effects to a movie or
image. DubIt uses a familiar VCR-style "Media Player" interface that anyone can
use. There is no complicated setup or long learning curve with DubIt. Simply
open a movie or image and hit the record button. Just because DubIt is small and
simple does not mean it is not powerful.

DubIt adds audio to the following file types: AVI, BMP, GIF, and JPG.
Also, DubIt adds audio to any image copied to the Windows clipboard.
DubIt creates a standard AVI movie file that can be played on most
Windows systems without any special software.
DubIt allows you to record from the microphone or insert a WAV audio file
anywhere in your movie sound track.
Add/modify/delete the movie sound track anywhere, any number of times,
with instant playback, until you are happy with the result.
Select the audio format you want to control the quality of your sound track
and the size of the movie file.
Extend the length of a movie or image to hold a sound track of any
length. And, DubIt can optimize the extended video to make the movie file
size as small as possible.
DubIt performs absolutely no video re-compression. Your video quality is
always preserved and audio editing is fast.
DubIt lets you select the movie size created for still image annotation.
Options include the original image size, a standard movie size, or any
specified movie width and height.
DubIt gives you full control over the movie playback size while you are
adding audio. Full screen size movies can be played without any resizing.
DubIt is nicely integrated with SnagIt, TechSmith's premier screen
capture tool. If you need to grab a picture or movie of anything on your
screen and then browse your images or movies with a thumbnail browser,
you need SnagIt! In SnagIt's Catalog Browser, select Add Audio from the
File menu to add audio using DubIt.
