Behavioral Management Strategy Strategy: Self-Talk– Behavior Management Appropriate Grade Level: 2-12 Procedures/Steps: The purpose of this strategy is to curb impulsive behavior and encourage self-control. 1. Ask student to say key phrase aloud. 2. Ask student to whisper phrase. 3. Ask student to moves only their lips. 4. Ask student to say phrase silently Comments and/or tips: Training involves teaching the student to use private speak. The first step usually involves teaching the student to match his or her behavior to someone’s (the teacher) key phrase. The key phrase will help guide the student through a complex task or situation. Eventually a student will be able to provide his or her own key phrase.
