Strategy: STOP- A phonological awareness strategy.
Appropriate Grade Level: 1-3
Procedures/Steps: Knowledge of letter sounds is important. This strategy
teaches segmenting a word into letter sounds and blending them.
STOP Strategy
S- Stare at the unknown word
T- Tell yourself each letter sound
O- Open your mouth and say each letter
P- Put letters together to say a word
Comments and/or tips: When using this strategy start with monosyllabic
words. Use about 10 words 3-4 letters long with a short vowel sound.
Progress to multisyllabic once students have mastered the strategy with
monosyllabic words.
