Journal Entry #5

This will be written in your journal book that I will collect at random times. Note: You are not being graded, nor judged, really, on your journal entries. However, the journal entries are part of your overall grade in this class: I will note if you have been doing them; I will note if you did what was assigned; I will note how well you completed your entries; and finally, I will note how your writing is progressing by comparing what I read in your journals to what I read in your papers.

In our text book, “Models for Writers”, we read a story in chapter six by Richard Lederer called, “The

Case for Short Words” in which he describes how being overly verbose can be confusing, for both reader and writer. As a class, we performed an exercise in which we examined some of the paragraphs of Lederer’s essay and changed every monosyllabic word to a polysyllabic word.

For this journal entry, you are to write a short story using only monosyllabic words. To help you begin, you can choose one of the following or create your own:

 “The last time I saw her, she...”

 “From the back of the truck...”

 “On the night of the full moon...”

 “The one thing I know for sure…”
