Strategy: Making the meaning stick
Appropriate Grade Level:
Procedures/Steps:
1) Students use post-it notes to identify unfamiliar words.
2) Draw an arrow that points to the word in question in the notes.
3) Use the context of the story, or a dictionary, to discover the meaning
of the word.
Comments and/or tips:
I enjoyed this strategy because the students chose individual words that
were unfamiliar to them. Then the students are allowed to research their
own words, reinforcing their learning. This makes them the teacher in the
scenario and increases learning.
