Mechanism of Post-Flight Herniation of Intervertebral Discs [#4002]
Herniated intervertebral discs are frequent in space crew members after return to Earth. Pre- and
post-flight imaging, functional testing, pain questionnaires of ISS crews will ascertain mechanisms of
degeneration and injury to spinal structures.

Simulating Lunar Surface Missions: Partial Weightbearing and Low Dose/High Energy Radiation
Impact on Bone Loss [#4234]
Mice exposed to partial weightbearing (1/6G) and modeled galactic cosmic radiation (300 MeV 28Si)
or reference x-ray radiation in acute or fractionated doses exhibit loss of bone. Effects of radiation on
bone mass vary by weightbearing status and type of radiation.
3:30 p.m.

Zwart S. R. Smith S. M.
Retrospective Study of Serum Sclerostin Measurements in Bed Rest Subjects [#4048]
Key words: bone loss, sclerostin, disuse, bed rest, immobilization, bone density.
3:45 p.m.
Hanson A. M. Rice A. J. Wilt G. L. Gilkey K. G. Grodsinsky C. M. Cavanagh P. R.
Monitoring Mechanical Stimulus to Bone in Simulated Lunar and Martian Activities [#4233]
Subjects performed activities in simulated martian and lunar gravities to test an activity monitoring
system (AMS) which has application in exercise prescription and activity recognition.
4:00 p.m.
Qin Y-X. Cheng J. Bi L. Pritz M. Ferreri S. Rubin C. Lin W.
Quantitative Ultrasound Bone Diagnosis and Guided Therapy for Fracture Healing [#4225]
To evaluate the efficacy of a scanning confocal acoustic navigation (SCAN) system for bone quality
and fracture assessment in interested region; and to test guided ultrasound in acceleration of fracture
healing in a hindlimb suspension model.
4:15 p.m.
