學海心得報告 University of Cumbria 李嘉玲 9854054A (English version) Summer of 2010 was really an unforgettable and precious summer vacation. It was a pleasure for me to have the chance to study abroad for one month. I was so glad that I could travel to England and stay with a traditional British family. Before I studied in I-shou university, I had already known that there was such a scholarship that the school would send students, who got good academic result, to study abroad for one month. Studying abroad was my dream. Therefore, at the beginning of my first scholastic year, I had set a goal for myself. I promised myself and my family that I had to try my best to study well and get this scholarship. As the result, I was glad that I could fulfill my promise and did not make my family disappointed. I could not believe that my dream would come true. For this scholarship, there were six programmes for us to choose. And they were in different location, such as United Kingdom (UK), United States (US) and Australia. Among these three places, I liked UK the most. It was because the UK was a very old, historical country. Also, British people always gave the impression of gentle and kind. Moreover, I loved the accent of British people in speaking English. I would like to learn their accent. So I chose to go to England and decided to join the programme that was studied in the University of Cumbria in Lancaster campus. In this programme, students were arranged to stay with the home stay, which was a local British family. I would decide to join this programme because it gave me the chance for staying with a host family. I believed that the best way for studying the different culture and practising the English speaking was to talk or live with the British people together. I thought it was the fastest and most efficient way. Besides, I thought it was really a very precious experience. It was because if you were not study abroad, it would be impossible for you to stay with a host family for such a long time. Our journey was started on 17th July. Travelling from Taiwan to the UK took about more than twelve hours. After such a long flight, we finally arrived at Lancaster, which was a wonderful and historical city. Although Lancaster was not a large city, the history of this place was over 2000 years. There were many historical places and the scenery there was very beautiful. After we just arrived at the campus, we met all the host family and the students were taken home by their own host families. It was the first time for me to stay with a British family. So I really felt very nervous. I was afraid that I could not communicate with them. I really do not have confidence in my such poor English. Moreover, it was not just a few days, it was a whole month. It was really frightened me. However, after meeting with my host family, I found that they were very nice and friendly. This made me relieved a little bit. Also, after knowing there would be one more student to stay with me in the same family, I was totally relieved. Now, let me introduce my host family. I got a host family which called Dods family, included my host parent, Malcom and Jackie, and a golden retriever called Mollie. Taylor, another Taiwanese student, and I were lived with this family for the whole month. Our home was located in a place called Hest Bank in Lancaster where was a little bit far away from the city centre. Although our home was quite near the countryside, the scenery there was beautiful. There was a canal near my home stay and the place was all plant with trees, all were in bright green. It was really wonderful and glamorous. Sometimes there were swans swimming in the canal. It was the first time for me to see the swans in such a near distance. Swans were so lovely. Our house was a detached house and also had a big garden. The decoration of the house was very pretty. It was just like my dream house. There was a grate in the living room. Unfortunately, it was in summer when we were in the UK, so we did not have the chance to use the grate. British people loved to do planting in their garden. I found that my host father had plant some strawberry, tomato, rhubarb, etc in the garden. It was the first time for me to hear a vegetable called rhubarb. This plant is quite interesting because we could only eat the stems and the leaves of it are poisonous. However, I did not like its taste. It was too sour for me. I thought I was so lucky that I could have this host family. Host parents treated me very well. When I did not understand something, they always explained to me patiently, although there might be some foolish question. When there were things which were difficult to explain, my host parents would also try their best to find a way for me to understand. I really thanked them for their kindness and patient. My host father is a humorous gentleman. He always told me jokes and made me laugh. He also taught me a lot about the British culture. My host mother is very kind lady and she was very good at cooking. Every day, I would always look forward to her cooking at night. Sometimes, she would also teach me to cook some British dish. I really love my host family. During the day, we had the lessons in the university. Lessons started from 9:00a.m. to 3:30p.m.every day. The first day of the school, our tutor brought us to look around the university. And in the afternoon, the student ambassador took us to go to the city centre and walked around the centre. We had gone to the Lancaster Castle which was more than 800 years old. In the old days, many innocent women were adjudged as witches and sent to death in the castle. Nowadays, half of the castle is still a prison and the rest is opened for visitors. Our tutor also brought us to visit a primary school. This made us learn more about the education in the UK. I thought the education in UK was better because it gave children more freedom to do what they want. During the lessons, our tutor would usually give us some topic work to work on, so that we could learn the culture and English from the work. Also, our lessons were focus on English speaking and vocabulary. Moreover, we needed to give a presentation in the last week of the programme. After the lessons, I had learnt more about how to greet people, make questions and answers politely, and learnt more about people‘s lives in the UK. Every Wednesday and Saturday, we would have the cultural visit. In this month, we had gone to Edinburgh, The Lake District, Liverpool and Manchester. Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland. It is divided in to the Old town and the New town. We travelled to Edinburgh by train. We had gone to the Edinburgh Castle. It is a very old castle. We saw the Honours of Scotland – the Crown, Sceptre and Sword of State – are the oldest crown jewels in the British Isles. It was really gorgeous and wonderful. The buildings in the castle were brilliant. After visiting the castle, we walked around the city. There were many street performances, such as magic, acrobatics, singing, etc. Besides, I saw some performers wore the traditional Scotland costume – kilt. It was really nice for visiting Edinburgh. The second place that we visited in the UK was the Lake District. It is a national park in UK. There were many famous poets and writers had been lived here, for example, William Wordsworth who had written many famous poems, like The Prelude, Daffodils, etc, and Beatrix Potter who is the writer of Peter Rabbit. We had visited the William Wordsmith Museum and his Dove Cottage where he had lived here for quite a long time. We also had passed across the lake by ferry. The scenery there was very lovely and glamorous. It was really a wonderful experience. Our tutor also brought us to go to Liverpool. We had visit The Anglican Cathedral, which was constructed between 1904 and 1978, is the largest Cathedral in Britain and the fifth largest in the world. It was really a magnificent church. I had never been visited such a gorgeous place. Also, we had visited the Beatles Museum where the fans of The Beatles must go. Although I was not a fan of them, after visiting this museum, I had known more things about them. Liverpool was a very nice place for travelling. The first place we visited in Manchester was the Old Trafford, where Manchester United Football Club located. Then, we had visited the Town Hall of Manchester. Manchester is a combination of historic and modern. There were both many historical places and modern shopping malls. I love Manchester very much. Apart from the cultural visit, we also had watched a play in the park. It was not the normal one that we watched in a theater, but it was held in a park called Williamson Park. Also, the play was not just hold in one location. I would separate in a few parts and audiences needed to walk to different places in the park to watch the play. That meant the play was a movable one. The play we watched was The Peter Pan. The play was really amazing and amusing. It was a interesting experience that we would not have in Taiwan. This study abroad scholarship had made my dream came true. I really deeply appreciated our school that fulfilled my wish. After this month, I have learnt many things and made many new friends. I had set another goal for myself. I will try my best to study well and get another scholarship to study abroad for one year. 學海心得報告英國坎布里亞大學 (中文) 二零一零年的夏天真的是一個令人難以忘記和非常珍貴的一個暑假。我能夠有機會到國外去讀書一個月，真是我的榮幸。我很開心我能夠飛到英國，與當地的家庭一齊生活。在我就讀義守大學之前，我就已經知道學校有一個會把學習成績好的學生送到國外遊學一個月的獎學金。我相信「讀萬卷書，不如行萬里路」這個道理。所以，在開學的時候，我就已立下一個目標。我向我家人跟我自己承認諾，我一定會盡我所能，努力讀書的去爭取這個獎學金。結果，我很高興我真的能完成這個目標，並沒有令家人失望。其實在出發那一刻前，我還是有一點不能相信我的出國夢想真的能實現。這個學海獎學金一共有六個團可以讓我們學生選擇。各團分別會到英國美國和澳洲。在這三個國家之中，我最喜歡英國。因為英國是一個歷史非常悠久的一個國家，而且英國人經常給人的印象都是有禮貌的和友善的。除此之外，我很喜歡英國人說英語的口音。我十分想這他們的口音。因此，我決定選擇去英國，並到坎布里亞大學遊學。在這個遊學團中，學生們都會被安排到本地的寄宿家庭裡生活一個月。我會選擇這一團是因為能到寄宿家庭生活是一個非常難得的機會。我覺得學習不同的文化和練習英語的最好辦法，就是直接跟英國人談話和生活在一起。這種方法應該能讓我快捷和有效的逹到目標。此外，我覺得如果不在國外讀書，就應該不會有跟寄宿家庭生活的機會，所以我覺得這應該會是一個極為寶貴的經驗。我們的遊學在七月十七號正式開始。由台灣坐飛機在英國大概需要超過十二個小時的飛行。其間，因為我們不能直航，需要轉機，所以所花費的時間會更多。經過很長的舟車勞頓，我們終於抵達蘭卡斯特(Lancaster)。這是一個十分美麗和很富歷史價值的一個城市。雖然這個地方不是一個很大的城市，但是它的歷史就已經超過兩千多年。這裡有很多歷史建築物，而且環景十分優美。當我們抵達坎布里亞大學後，同學都被自己的寄宿家庭帶回家去。這是我第一次跟英國人相處，所以我感到非常的緊張。我真的對我自己的英文沒有信心，我怕我會跟他們溝通不來。再加上，我們一起相處的時間不是一天兩天，而是一整月，心中難免會十分不安。但是，在我遇到的寄養父母後，我覺得他們都很好和十很友善，這使我有一點放心下來。之後，當我知道我不是只有一個人住在這個家庭時，我整個人就完全的解脫了。現在就讓我來介紹一下我的寄宿家庭吧。這個家庭姓 Dods，家庭 1 成員有寄宿父母，Malcom 和 Jackie，還有他們的金毛獵犬，叫 Mollie. Taylor 是另位跟住同一個寄宿家庭的台灣學生。我們的家坐落在蘭卡斯特裡一個叫 Hest Bank 的地方。這個地方是有一點遠離市區。雖然家住在郊外，這那裡的風景十分的優美，空氣也很清新。我家旁邊就有一條運河，周圍都種滿很多花草樹木，一眼看過去都是綠油油一遍的，真的是非常美麗。有時候，我們在散步時，會看到一群群的天鵝在運河中游泳。我覺得這是一個很難得的機會，能夠在這麼近的距離自到天鵝。它們都十分可愛。天氣好的時候，有些人會在運河旁垂釣。環境十分如詩如畫一般。我們家的房子是一間獨立式的房子，還有一個大花園。屋子裡的裝潢，擺設都很漂亮，跟我夢想中的房子一模一樣。屋裡的客廳裡還有一個壁爐。不過很可惜的是，我們到英國的時候是夏天，因此無法嘗試用到壁爐，只好看著它幻想一下吧。英國人很喜歡在自己家的花園種植。我發現我們家的花園就種了草莓，番茄，大黃(rhubarb)。大黃是一種很有趣的植物，我們只能吃它的莖，而它的葉子是有毒的。但是，嘗試過它的味道後，我不太喜歡它，因為這真的是太酸了。我真的覺得我十分的幸運，能夠被分配到這個家庭。寄養父母都對我很好，照顧有加。當我有不懂的事時，他們總是會不厭其煩的解釋給我聽。當有遇到一些十分難以解釋的事情時，他們都會盡他們所能，努力的用最簡單的方式來解釋我聽。我十分感謝他們對我的幫助。寄宿家庭的男主人是一個很幽默的紳士。他經常會說笑，還有他教曉我很多有關英國文化的事情。而女主人對我們很友善，並且她很擅長烹飪。每一天，我都會很期待晚餐會是什麼。有時候，她也會教我煮一些英式料理。我真的非常喜歡他們。每天早上，我們會在大學上課。我們會從早上九時開始上課，到下午三點半才下課。上學的第一天，我們的老師帶我們到處走走，認識一下學校。到了下午，就由學生代表帶我們市中心逛逛。我們去了 Lancaster Castle。這個城堡已經有八百多年的歷史。很久以前，有很多無辜的婦女，被判決是巫女，因而在那裡被判死刑。到了現在，這個城堡還是一個監獄，而有一部分的地方，就開放給市民參觀。我們的老師也有帶我們到小學參觀。這次的探訪使我們更加了解到英國的教育。我比較喜歡他們的教育，因為我覺得他們會給小朋友多一點自由去做他們想做的事。除了探訪活動外，在課堂上，老師會給一些小組工作，一齊討論，從而對英國的文化有更深的了解。此外，我們的課堂大部分都著重於英文的對話跟詞彙的學習，我們並要在最後的一個星期做一個口頭報告。上完這些課後，我覺得我真的是獲益良多，我學到如何有禮貌地用英文來待人接物，並對自己的英語增加一點信心。每逢星期三跟星期六，我們都會有體驗文化的外遊活動。在這一個月我們分別去了愛丁堡，湖區，利物浦和曼澈斯特。愛丁堡是蘇格蘭的首都。它是分成舊區跟新區兩個區域。我們是乘搭火車去的。到了那裡以後，我們去了愛丁堡城堡。它是一個非常古老的一個城堡。我們看到被稱為蘇格蘭的榮耀(the Honours of Scotland) – 皇冠，權杖和寶劍，其中，皇冠的歷史是英國島嶼上最古老的。它真的是非常的華麗和珍貴。城堡中的建築物都十分壯麗。在參觀完愛丁堡城堡後，我們一行人在愛丁堡到處逛逛。在那裡有很多街到表演，如魔術，雜技表演，唱歌等等。我還看到有些男表演者穿著傳統的蘇格蘭服飾 – 蘇格蘭裙。愛丁堡真是一個很好的地方。我們去的第二個地方就是英國的湖區。它是一個國家公園。以前，有很多有名的詩人和作家都曾經在那裡居住過，例如，William Wordsworth 和 Beatrix Potter。 Beatrix Potter 就是童書《彼得兔》的作者。我們到了湖區，首先就是坐船遊湖，然後我們就到了 William Wordsmith Museum 和他的 Dove Cottage 參觀。湖區的風景真的是十分優美動人，這真是一次很難得的經驗。我們的導師也有帶我們去利物浦。我們去參觀了利物浦座堂 (The Anglican Cathedral)。它的建築時間是由 1904 年到 1978 年，是英國最大的天主教堂，同時也是世界第五大的教堂。這個教堂真的是非常的宏偉壯麗，簡直是太令人讚嘆了。另外，我們也參選了披頭四博物館。如果你是他們的粉絲，就一定要去那裡參觀。雖然我不是他們的粉絲，但參觀完那裡以後，我對他們的了解也加深了不少。利物浦真是一個令人難以忘懷的一個好地方。到曼澈斯特觀光，就當然不能不去曼聯球場，參觀完球場後，我真的更了解到英國人有多愛足球，真的能感受到他們的足球文化。雖然我不是足球迷，但我也很想在那個球場裡看一次球賽，去真正的感受一下那裡的氣氛。不過很可惜，那時候還沒有球賽，所以只好等的下次機會再來曼城。我們之後也有到曼城的政府大樓去參選。它是一個很古老的建築物。曼澈斯特是一個古代與現代結全到一齊的地方。在古老的建築物中，會夾雜一些現代的大樓跟百貨公司。我真的很喜歡曼澈斯特。除了遊覽活動，我們也有到一個公園裡看話劇。這個話劇不像那種坐著在劇院看的那一類。這個是把整個公園當作舞台，每到一幕結束以後，觀眾需要移動到下一幕的場地那裡繼續觀賞，這是一個移動話劇。我覺得這個話劇真的很有趣和這是在台灣很難會有的一個體驗。我很開心學校能幫我完成出國的願望。在這短短的日子裡，我學到了很多，也認識了很多新朋友，並且對自己的英文多了一點信心。在這個遊學團結束以後，我又為自己立了一個新目標，我要繼續努力讀書，再拿另外一個獎學金，再次的出國留學。蔡宜錚 isu9877003A 親愛的英國：妳好。百聞不如一見。初到貴境的第一週，有點害怕有點不安有點羞赧，拿著地圖深怕踏錯任何一步。第一天抵達英國，懷著忐忑懷著不安找到了我在英國的媽媽。上下左右老是分不清楚東南西北，第一天媽媽帶著我們到市區，經過每一家商店每一條街每一棟建築物，都讓我像剛出井底的青蛙般驚呼連連。一手拿著車證，一手拿著地圖，手牽著手開始了在英國的探險之旅。事前總是緊張兮兮的問英國人好不好相處？到了英國真真切切體會到英國人真的很和善，總是面帶微笑，總是熱情的跟人打招呼，總是熱心助人。事前總是聽說英國菜難吃死了，到了英國非得要等到褲子變緊了才會承認英國其實是個美食天堂。這些在短短的幾天內我都了解了。第一週，了解了蘭卡斯特她的美麗和她的過去，參觀了蘭卡斯特城堡，走遍了蘭卡斯特的市區，老師說：從市區走到蘭卡斯特城堡這條路是從羅馬時代就遺留下來的。不知道為什麼，這句話總是在我心中感動很久直到現在。我們現在所踩的石頭路是好久好久以前建造的，我們踏著先人的腳步到了現在。老師濃厚的英國腔所講出來的這番話在我心中引起了很大的共鳴，從來不知道原來英文也可以講得如中文般的美。第一週的週末就奔到愛丁堡接受文化洗禮，街頭藝人街頭表演令人眼花撩亂，令人瞠目結舌的教堂跟城堡卻只是一小部分。雖然老是分不清楚這個街道跟那個轉角有什麼不同，但每走一步都讓我駐足很久，深怕錯過了這城市的所有美麗。第二週，少了羞赧和陌生，我跟蘭卡斯特好像更親密了。搭車到了摩肯海邊，沿路上發現了這城市的另一種面貌另一種風情。這一週，到了湖區，一個超美麗的地方，坐上了船感覺真的很不一樣。看到了一家手工巧克力店，真的很驚人，巧克力做成的鞋子足球等等，整間糖果店就像個藝術展覽館，瞠目結舌。在湖區我遇到了一個令我心動的小男孩，因為我對她的單輪車趕到驚訝，他便主動騎給我看，真的是令我又驚又喜又害羞，還有心花怒放，英國這可愛的民族。參觀了蘭卡斯特當地小學，體驗了英國的教學方式，令我驚訝的是從國小開始便有學生組織，就如同學生會般，學生們也提出政見為同學服務。從小朋友的學習態度我看到了自己的缺點，他們的勇於發問勇於發表讓我知道了自己的不足，他們落落大方的態度也讓自己知道該補足哪個部分。這週末也和同學一起到了曼徹斯特，購物天堂也是華人地區，新舊合併的建築物在一次的令我震驚，和台灣不一樣的，英國對於保存文化非常的重視，當新的建築蓋在舊的建築物旁並不會覺得不協調或是怪異，反之有種見證歷史的感覺，這種文化衝擊對我來說很新鮮。第三週，參觀了披頭四博物館，跟以往所看到的博物館不同，雖然他也是陳列物品，但多了種活潑的感覺，無須跟著導覽員，每個人都有個耳機，隨著自己的步調慢慢的去觀看每一個展覽櫃。這週末也獨自到了媽媽的故鄉，blackpool，是個著名的度假勝地，有遊樂園有賭場有同志酒吧，還有瘋狂龐克族。他不是個先進的都市，但純樸有特色的小城市也別有風情。第四週，忙著打包行李準備報告外，也滿心期待著傳說中的劇場表演；彼得潘。先參觀劇場製作以及劇團裡的東西，讓我對彼得潘的演出更加期待，那是在一個戶外公園演出，用著大自然的場景演出整出故事，聽媽媽說場場爆滿，今年能看到真是福氣啊。在英國的生活很愜意，我想應該是氣候涼爽導致的，看起英文文章來都特別有耐心，早上早起上課，課堂上總是活潑生動，老師總是很有耐心的跟我們解釋所有我們的不懂，同學們的分享以及老師的補充都讓我對英國更了解，每次有不懂得回到家裡問媽媽，媽媽總是能補充更多他所知道的英國。每天傍晚跟媽媽一起吃晚餐看新聞，起初都覺得媽媽用的單字艱深難懂，但經過了幾天的磨練，便能和媽媽侃侃而談，有任何問題也都不再害怕發問。吃完晚餐後的傍晚，和同學一起在蘭卡斯特散步，每天的新路線，每天都有新發現，每條小路每條街道都巴不得能一瞬間就走透透，白天去過的公園，白天經過的街道，吃飽飯後的傍晚總是樣貌不同，天氣好的這裡總是能看到對邊的海，天氣不好的這裡也難擋這腳想出走的心情。在蘭卡斯特多帶一天便是多被這美麗城市吸引，他不大但是也不小，他不是新城市但也並非超級古老，他生活機能性高但是並不特別繁榮，他純樸但是不無聊，他簡單但總是令人驚喜。這樣多樣貌的她深深的吸引著我想了解更多。約了一天和同學一起去吃晚餐，事先還得拍張照回家研究菜單上在寫什麼，確定了自己要吃什麼，點餐也還是鬧了一堆笑話，之後才懂點餐是門學問啊。也和同學去體驗英國的夜生活，感覺很特別。在英國的好多事情都很特別，就連打個保齡球也驚呼連連，搭公車也非得跑上第二層，走每天走過的路也都忍不住東張西望瞧東瞧西。媽媽介紹的傳統點心也逐漸上了癮。已經漸漸地熟悉英國特別的鎖門方式；也已經漸漸地習慣了交通號誌以及左右方向；漸漸地講英文開始有點英國腔；漸漸地都快忘了四個禮拜過的特別的快。親愛的英國；已經離開你一個月了，但是卻還是念念不忘你的美。 Dear England: Hello. Dear UK; has left you a month, but never forget your beauty. 國際企業經營學系莊蓓琳 9877037A 出國遊學這個夢想我終於實現了，一開始得知我已獲得可以前往英國去上暑假英文研習一個月，真的是既興奮又有點緊張。也因為擔心自己的進度到了那裡會跟不上進度或者是遇到問題會不知如何解決，所以在出國前我努力的準備一下英文，我背了一些可能日常上會用到的單字和一些簡單的對話。即使我的英文能力已經有了不錯的基礎，但還是希望這趟英國遊學能讓我學到很多在國內學不到的東西。我也給了自己良好的心理建設，到了那裏我要無時無刻撐開眼睛看看那裡的每一樣東西，因為我覺得不同的文化環境會給人一種另類的觀感。我出國前一直提醒自己我一定要滿滿的收穫回來，我也知道一個月不能每一項事情都記得清清楚楚，所以我帶了一本筆記本和我的相機，我記錄了在英國一個月每天發生的重要事情也拍了很多美麗且值得紀念的照片。到了英國曼徹斯特機場，我們前往我們將在那學習一個月的大學－坎布里亞 (Cumbria University)。往學校的沿途我一直都看著窗外，第一次來到英國是多麼的新鮮且特別，看著高速公路上的車子，研究它們的行進路線是跟台灣相反，是靠著左邊行駛。還有車牌號碼也是很特別。也發現英國好多 AUDI 和 MINIICOOPER。到了學校時真的是目瞪口呆，坎布里亞大學的還經真的很漂亮且草皮綠樹都很多，看了就非常的舒服。我們到時搬下行李到了一間教室裡，教室裡滿滿的都是要收留我們的寄宿家庭，每個家庭都好開心面帶微笑的看著我們，那時的我一直努力的在找哪位是我的 home mom，因為我在出國前就在網路上找到了我的 home mom 的 facebook 且也加了她。以我銳利的眼神我一下子就找到了我的 home mom，當時她也很熱情的握個手，我們彼此簡單的自我介紹，雖然那時是有點緊張講話都差點要結巴了。不過也是好險我的寄宿家庭有另外一位同學和我一起住，所以我們彼此可以互相照應。之後我們用走路不到五分鐘就到了我們寄宿家庭的家了，外觀很特別且英國的房子都是矮房不高，每一間看起來都好可愛。一進到家裡，感覺真的很溫馨，且重點是我們的媽媽真的對我們很和善很好，因為外面天氣冷且有點下雨，所以媽媽煮了一個很好喝的湯給我們喝，整個心都溫暖了起來，但也頓時有點想念台灣的媽媽了。之後媽媽帶我們去蘭卡斯特鎮上走走，簡單的介紹鎮上的一些店家一些我們可能會去到的地方像是郵局或車站之類的等等。接下來就是為期約４周的英文研習課程，我覺得這趟英國坎布里亞大學英文研習的課程真的是太棒了！除了充實的課程之外，每個星期三、星期五下午和星期六都有出外學習的戶外活動，真的是相當的貼心且充實，因為我們到英國不但是增進自己的英文程度也是希望能夠到很多地方體驗英國當地的文化、生活和人文等等。我們的課程包含了常用英文單字、如何與英國人溝通相處、如何和寄宿家庭擁有好的關係、英國的教育、英文溝通技巧和英國文化……等等。課堂上所學習到的東西都非常的實用，都可以直接運用到，例如說，老師教我們在寄宿家庭裡如何跟家人溝通或者是我們自己到了外面需要別人協助時，我們該如何說才不會侵犯到他人。我也學到了很多英式英文，和往往我們在台灣學的英文不一樣，學了很多英式英文的單字和句子。我們也學到了很多與台灣不一樣的地方，像是英國的教育制度就和台灣很不一樣；家庭的教育方式也很不同，他們的小孩長大了大約１８歲就要出外自己努力賺錢生活甚至是搬出去住，除非還有繼續就學否則都已經獨立的生活在外了。且我們也有到了它們那裡的學校，裡面的小孩大約是５～１１歲的。每個都長個極致的可愛，且他們的個性也和台灣的小孩大大的不同，我們有去參觀他們上課的情形，每個小孩都很勇敢的表達自己的意見和想法，也非常的有秩序。且他們也才小學就有類似學生會性質的組織，真的是很特別很台灣的小孩很不一樣。還有我覺得課程很好的是，老師都會給我們一些小小的功課，都不會很難完成，譬如說：他要我們去注意周遭的人說的一些話有沒有很特別和我們認知的英文不一樣的或者是去注意生活環境中一些特別的東西和台灣不一樣的或我們感到好奇的都可以寫在功課上，然後上課時在發表出來或者問問老師。我覺得這樣很好是因為，我們同學間就可以彼此學到一些我們本身沒有注意到但別人注意到了，可以學習到更多。在生活上，我們每天都有好多機會可以增進自己的英文溝通能力，每天晚上我都會跟我們的 home mom 一起吃晚餐看 CNN 新聞，且我們的媽媽也會跟我們討論新聞的內容或是和我們聊聊今天我們在學校的事情等等。再來就是一連串真的很充實的戶外活動，第一個星期我們去了摩肯，那裡是一個靠近海邊的小鎮，那裡的海景真的是美不勝收，我們也到了英文的保齡球館打球，那裡的保齡球道夠特別，永遠不會洗溝；我們也去參觀了蘭卡斯特的城堡，真的很壯觀很有歷史性。我覺得參觀起來會非常起勁的是因為每次我們要到一個地方參觀，老師都會先在課堂上給我們講義介紹我們即將要去參觀的地方或者由玩的地點甚至城市。所以我們也學到了原來蘭卡斯特以前是一個監獄，我們也親身去體驗了被關在監獄裡的那種黑暗恐懼，真的是個很特別的體驗；我們也有學習到蘭卡斯特當地的商業發展和娛樂事業，老師都有帶著我們去鎮上介紹一些工廠小公司、電影院和小劇場等等。我們也去了英國最美麗的國家公園－湖區。那裡的風景真的是美不勝收，我們也搭了小船從湖的一邊到了另一個小鎮。我們也看了一場真的很新奇的戶外表演，這一場彼得潘戲劇的演出沒有舞台，他們則是運用 WILLIAM PARK 的地形和城堡演出了一場精采絕倫的表演。這樣的經驗我想只有在英國體驗的到，我們觀眾必須跟個演員從一個場景跑到下一個場景。當然我們也不是只待在鎮上，我們也到了好多個城市像是利物浦、曼徹斯特、愛丁堡。我們在利物浦參觀了披頭四的博物館，這個博物館不是一般的博物館走一走看一看這樣而已，而是我們可以帶著耳機到每一個定點按下按鈕就可以聽到他們的介紹，且裡面也有一系列的小遊戲、變裝遊戲等等；曼徹斯特是英國的第二大城市也相當的熱鬧繁華，所有可以想的到的英國品牌或者是國際名牌通通在那裏都可以看的到，且那裡也有一個很大的中國城；愛丁堡則真的是一個又繁榮又有濃濃歷史味的城市，從愛丁堡車站出來就可以清楚的劃分成是於兩種面貌，一邊是現代建築繁榮的鬧區，另一邊則是擁有著古老的建築有著古典美的地方。這次的英國暑假英文研習真的讓我學習到不少，我的英文程度也有了進展。在英文溝通上面我變得比較有膽量且也比較敢和國外老師說話。當然學習到的不只是課業上的知識，我也學到了英國的文化特色。對於我課業上也有了不少的幫助，這趟遊學使得我更加熱愛語言尤其是英文。也給予我大大的熱忱動力去學習更多東西，努力增進自己的課業成績，希望可以再爭取到更多類似這趟完美的出國遊學。 International Business Administration Chuang Pei Lin (Agnes) 9877037A I finally accomplished my dream of going abroad. At the beginning, I have already gained the opportunity of going to England for summer school. At that time, I felt exciting and a little bit nervous. Also, I worried about my English ability and I was afraid that my English level couldn’t catch up so I prepared a lot. I memorized some daily used sayings and some easy conversation. Even though my English ability had decent foundation, I also hoped I could learn more knowledge that we cannot learn in Taiwan. I also gave myself a good awareness and I would always open my eyes to observe everything and expand my horizon. In order to learn more things and also I knew that I couldn’t remember everything so that I brought a notebook to write down everything happened in England. I took down every important or meaningful things and many beautiful pictures. Arrived at the Manchester airport, we left for the Cumbria University where we learned for one month. Along the way to school, I had been looking out windows, observing every fresh and different thing compared with Taiwan. Also, I was looking at all cars on the motorway, the route of cars is contrary to Taiwan and there all rely on the left of the road. There is also a very special license plates that is quite different from Taiwan’s. The campus of Cumbria is very beautiful and it has lots of tree and grass. When we arrived at the school, we took our luggage and moved into a classroom. In the classroom, many host families were waiting for us and each family looked nice and friendly. At that time, I was trying hard to find where my home mom is. Because I found my home mom’s facebook and also chatted with her briefly before I went abroad. When I first saw my home mom, I was a little nervous and we simply introduced ourselves to each other. After that, our host families brought us to our place where we lived for a short period. Fortunately, I shared the same family with my classmate so that we could look after each other. By the way, we just took less than five minutes to get to the host family’s place so our place is very near to campus. We are really lucky because some of our classmates may have to spend more than half hour to get to school. the appearance of houses in UK are low and they all looks cute. When I first stepped into the house we lived, I felt very warm and all their decoration are colorful. At that time, the weather here was bad and kept raining so it would feel cold so that our mom cooked some soup for us. After that, my mother took us to walk around the town of Lancaster, introducing some shops that we may have to go for doing something such as post office, bus and train station, special grocery stores, cinema and some delicious restaurant, etc. Next step is about four weeks of English study program. I thought this program of summer school in Cumbria University is wonderful because it is not just about the courses we learn English also have some abundant tour. In addition, to enrich the curriculum, each Wednesday, Friday afternoon and Saturday all have outdoor activities. I really like these courses because we went to UK not only to improve our English ability also able to experience the daily life style and British culture and so on. Our courses included education in UK, British etiquette, daily used vocabulary, how to communicate with the British, how to have a good relationship with host families and so on. Most of the things we learned in class are very useful and we could directly apply them in my daily life in UK. For example, professor taught us how to communicate with host family or strangers when we need help. Besides, I also learned a lot of British English vocabulary and it is different from the American English that we usually learned in Taiwan. We also learned many difference between Taiwan. For example, the British education system is divided by primary school (for 5 to11 years old) and secondary school (for 11 to 16 years old). After finished the academics, they could choose either keep studying in University or go out to find a job themselves. Teaching of family is very different as well. When children are grown-up or they are eighteen, they must have to go out to find a job unless they choose to keep studying in University. Otherwise they have to live outside independently. In order to let us understand the education in UK, we went to visit a Bowerham primary school where the children in is about 5 to 11 years old. Those children there are really lovely and extroverted. Their personalities are quite different between Taiwan’s children. We visited their class situation then and I found that most of them are very brave to express their ideas and opinions. I also found one is special. They are all primary school just like our elementary school in Taiwan but they actually have student council committee. Their members took us to visit around their class and also we played with them in the playground. Moreover, I thought the courses gave me lots of knowledge and benefits because our professor would give us a homework sheet per week, and we have to observe everything around us. For example, she wanted us to pay attention to people around us and listened what they said, if we don’t understand any words or sentences, we just write down right away; she wanted us to pay attention to the living environment or something special items and so on. For example, I found two special things. First, when we walk across the road, we have to press a waiting button and also it have ”look left, look right or look both sides” on the face of the road. I think this is good because we learn among students to connect to each other did not notice some of our own but other people notice, you can learn more. In life, every day we have a lot of opportunities to improve their English communication skills, every night I would home mom with our dinner watching CNN news, and our mother would discuss with us the content of news or and we talk about things in our schools today, and so on. Again is really fulfilling a series of outdoor activities, the first week we went to the Moken, there is a small town near the beach, where the sea is really beautiful, and we also went to play bowling in English, where bowling special enough, never gutter; we visited the castle of Lancaster, it is really quite spectacular historic. I think it would be very energetically to visit is because every time we go to a place to visit, the teacher will first lecture in the classroom to introduce us to visit places we will be going to the place or by playing or even cities. Therefore, we also learned the original Lancaster used to be a prison, we were off to experience the kind of dark in the prison of fear, really is a very special experience; we also have to learn the local Lancaster business development and entertainment, the teacher has brought us to a small company town introduced a number of factories, movie theaters and small theaters and so on. We also went to the UK's most beautiful national parks - the Lake District. Where the scenery is really beautiful, we also take a boat from the lake side to another town. We also saw a really new outdoor performance, this is not a stage for the play Peter Pan, who is the use of WILLIAM PARK terrain and performed a dazzling castle exquisite performances. Edinburgh is really a history of taste and prosperity of the city have thick, from Edinburgh to the station to clear out was divided into two kinds of face, one side is the modern building boom downtown, and the other side is has a classic old building has a beautiful place. 職治一 9855020A 陳幼綾學海獎學金 UK‐ Cumbria 團路程這是我第一次去遊學，第一次搭飛機，上飛機時才覺得很高興，沒想到自己真的要去英國了，感覺不真實，同時也很感謝學校給我這次機會出去拓展視野。從香港搭飛機到 London,飛程要十小時左右，然後抵達倫敦後還要飛往 Manchester，最後才由曼城開車前往 Lancaster，長途跋涉是非常疲憊的事情，可是想到要展開一段異國的生活體驗，這些疲憊也就不算什麼了。我們到了曼徹斯特，學生大使 Mike 帶我們去搭公車到 Lancaster，車開了好久，我看到好多之前在台灣看不到的風景，這天一直是陰天且綿綿細雨，可是我仍然是興致勃勃。我看到一路上有好多漂亮的建築物，私人的房子或者是博物館與城堡。整個風景如詩如畫非常的漂亮，有時候還有牛、羊或是馬在草地上，當時真的非常的驚訝，竟然如此接近牠們。寄宿家庭到了 Lancaster，我們去大學和寄宿家庭見面並帶我們回家。我到了寄宿家庭，我覺得簡直棒極了!因為房子大、花園大、廚房、客廳、餐廳、廁所都好精緻又十分具有設計感，因為男主人是建築師，所以都自己設計並裝潢。女主人很會做菜，我第一天才知道原來英國人的午餐習慣喝濃湯配麵包，女主人自製的蔬菜濃湯真的很美味，當時覺得自己是落入天堂了！我還記得一開始跟寄宿家庭有點難以溝通，我總是不知如何應對他們，不知道怎樣表達自己，而且有時候還會不小心就說出中文了。晚餐的時候聊天對我來說有點困難，因為還陌生況且我很少在吃東西時跟父母或朋友聊天，更不用說是用英文了。但我還是硬著頭皮去講了，既然到了英國，那就要多磨練自己的英文！因為在台灣都沒有這種機會。但好險我的寄宿家庭人都很友善，因為他們會耐心聽我們（我跟另一個寄宿學生）說話，如果有說錯的地方他們也會稍微提醒並且放慢自己說英文的速度，原本以為慢熟的我會一直對他們很陌生，但是沒想到我們三天就熟到無話不談了，甚至可以互相開玩笑！寄宿家庭教了我許多事，都是學校或台灣甚至英文名師無法教我的，學了許多生活方式、思想、有趣的英文、實用的英文會話、不同地區的英國腔等等。我們的寄宿家庭還會開車帶我們出去玩或是女主人知道我們想吃什麼就會做給我們吃，真的十分感動。到後來我會跟女主人聊心事，一起分享想法，真的很難得的經驗，好感謝學校，讓我認識這麼棒的家庭！所以這趟遊學，我認為最值得、最寶貴、最令我想念的就是寄宿家庭了！我還記得我隔天一早下去吃早餐的時候就算晚了，我只剩十分鐘可以吃早餐哈哈！因為我沒有吃早餐的習慣，桌上的擺設很講究，他們對吃什麼要用什麼餐具非常在乎，於是短短的一天內我就學到了兩個文化的差異。學習在學校，老師 Tania 非常的親切且熱心，就算你回答錯誤她也不會嘲笑或是生氣，因此在上課的時候，不管我的英文好壞，我都很勇敢的發言，而且不會因為自己在回答或理解上犯了錯誤而感到羞愧因而怯步。這點對於學習很重要，因為英文要進步就是要不斷的去應用，不斷的發問，這個字的唸法或拼字，要很有禮貌的問，無論是寄宿家庭或者是老師甚至路人都是，只要有禮貌的問，他們都會很有耐心的回答你。請、謝謝、對不起是生活在英國必備的單字，會常常用到，因為英國人非常在乎禮貌這件事。在課程內容裡，老師講解了英國的文化，並要我們分享台灣的文化，進而比對出兩國差異。過程裡十分有趣，卻也發現，其實兩國的差異真的不大，除了一些小地方以外，其實再怎樣我們都一樣是人類，生活模式其實差不多。除此之外我們還學習了英國禮儀，像是說話就是一門藝術，在英國說話更不能隨便，老師教了我們許多說話技巧，怎樣讓人覺得我們很有禮貌、讓人覺得自己沒被冒犯。老師開始會要求我們的文法或是措詞可以多變化，再來就是發音，發音若是發錯可是會鬧很大的笑話的!所以正確的發音非常的重要！到了課程最後，老師要我們每個人都準備上台報告，主題就是自己選擇但都要跟英國相關。剛開始覺得自己要上台講 8~10 分鐘的英文簡直是不可能，我選的是 current fashion in UK 那天我竟然講了 22 分鐘！真是不可思議！初步認識英國第一天上課，老師帶我們到處在校園走走，這天天氣還是很不好，一直下雨，但依舊沒有破壞我們雀躍的心和漂亮的校園。接著，Mike 帶我們去參觀 Lancaster 的市中心，市中心有各式各樣的店面，在台灣時從來沒看過，讓我們女生看的是目不轉睛，當然其中就有許多賣服飾的，還有一間很精緻古典的書 waterstone，我背著大背包然後撐傘，只是一直走，根本就沒機會仔細逛街，讓我心中下了決定，接下來的日子要好好逛！ 7/20 我們今天去參訪了當地的小學，其實就在我們學校附近而已。我覺得很驚訝，因為這間小學的建築就像小城堡一樣，感覺很古老，可是卻充滿了青春的活力。這天的天氣還蠻冷的，話說我覺得每天都是冷的，可是冰涼的空氣讓我覺得很舒爽且腦袋清晰。一走進去學校裡，覺得裡面很大，我一直有錯覺，因為他們的小學感覺很像我們的幼稚園，所以我一直把它想成是幼稚園。不同於台灣的小學，英國的小學只有一層樓，不同年級分別在不同班，每一年級的學生莫約 30 位，然後一個還算大的操場。但是比起台灣的小學，台灣的國小有許多棟，而且都有許多樓層，每個年級分別有許多班級，每個班級又有許多學生。英國的老師大多都很有耐心，當學生調皮的時候，他們會把小孩當大人一樣跟他說理，不會對他們大吼大罵的也不會打。例如小孩上課喧嘩，他們會很冷靜的對小孩說：請問你有尊重我嘛？還有他們音樂課感覺很開心，一群小孩坐在地上，前面有兩位女老師邊彈吉他邊與同學們一同唱著歌。那種單純的快樂，讓我十分的著迷。每個星期他們會選出一位 star，因該算是模範生吧！還有他們每個小孩不管幾年級，都非常的有禮貌非常的 gentle，讓我很驚訝。印象很深刻的是剛開始他們安排我們跟幾位學生談話，他們幾乎都是 school council，是大家選出來的，任何大小事都要顧及。我們被安排給一個小帥哥 HARRY，十歲。非常有禮貌，非常緊張，哈哈！說完 PRADON 又回答我們問題。在 PLAYGROUND 的時候他還找的他的好朋友 SAM 也是很可愛，一起跟我打招呼聊天，我覺得很開心很感動。在 PLAYGROUND 的時候還跟一群可愛的女生們玩他們最流行玩的遊戲，跟他們一起玩我也覺得好開心，跟他們上課時，有個漂亮的小女孩一直跟我隔空耍功夫，真的好可愛！在離開小學的時候我真的很不捨呢！ 7/21 這天天氣開始放晴，整個 Lancaster 似乎甦醒，大夥放學約一起逛逛市中心，漫步在大學裡，長長的下坡，旁邊都是草地，太陽照耀在草皮及英式建築上，風景美的動人，我們忍不住拍了許多的照片且玩的不亦樂乎。英國的巴士很可愛，是雙層的，雙層的坐起來像是遊覽車的感覺。英國馬路有行人專用燈，行人要過馬路時按下，等一段時間就會轉為紅燈，就可以走，否則其他時間車可以一直通行。我們到了 TOWN 要找的就是糖果店，叫 HUMBUGS，裡面的糖果種類繁多且整間店都香香的，糖果價格都不貴，而且味道都很可愛。今天很特別，剛好有路邊市集，我買了英國有名的手工軟糖（fudge），綜合口味的，每個都很好吃，可是每個都非常甜，所以可以保存頗久，或許配上黑咖啡或英國茶感覺會很棒。經過這次逛街我們才驚訝的發現，原來英國為了增加工作效率，所以許多店家執行的 8:00~17:00 的營業制度，所以想多逛街，就要早點逛，否則下午五點一到，店家準時打烊。觀光我們第一個禮拜去了 Lancaster Castle，十分美麗壯觀，而這城堡的來頭可不小，以前是拿來關女巫的監獄，到了現在，城堡的一部分仍然是監獄，剛開始以為城堡就是國王公主住的地方，知道它的歷史之後，進去自然有種不寒而慄的感覺。第一個在英國的假日我們去了 Edinburgh，街頭藝人、好天氣加上濃濃的蘇格蘭氣息，每個人都十分的興奮，比我想像中的好太多了！去 Edinburgh 的 castle 時要特別小心，他們幫你拍照不用錢，但洗出來可不便宜呢！再來是 the Lake District，彼得兔的故鄉，這裡是風景出了名的美，一到了這裡，有種說不上來的愜意感，就如同彼得兔故事裡的畫一樣，一切都是那麼的悠閒，少了高樓大廈，多了山明水秀，難怪大家都推薦要來 lake district. 同一禮拜的假日到 Liverpool，the Beatles 的故鄉！是搖滾客朝聖的地方，來這可以看到一堆喜愛搖滾樂的人，不分男女老少，每個人都細細品嚐博物館的展示品。第三週的 Manchester 必參觀的就是曼聯球場了！曼聯球場真的很氣派，我們還參觀了球員休息室，愛足球的人都樂不可支。當然，Manchester 身為英國第二大城市，最重要的就是逛街了！所以大家在這買了不少紀念品呢！最後的行程是 the Duke’s Theatre 的 peter pan 表演，我被這齣表演深深吸引住了，他們的舞台就是公園，與觀眾近距離接觸，也因為舞台是公園的關係，觀眾必須要跟著故事內容去到不同的場景，在換場景的時間內，我跟劇中主角聊天了，覺得他們非常平易近人讓我覺得很開心。而他們的表演也是非常高水準的，他們的創意巧思正是吸引人的地方！道別後來發現道別是我們團的學生最不想面對的，因為英國太美好，寄宿家庭太友善，而且大家都學到很多有趣的英文及新知識，所以都不想回去了。我還記得道別時，我跟寄宿家庭的爸媽緊緊擁抱在一起，我告訴他們我還會在回來看他們、一定會保持聯絡，原本我們都愛互開玩笑，這時卻變得嚴肅起來，home 媽的聲音哽咽，其實淚水已在眼眶打轉。到了小巴士上，home 爸媽還一直揮手說再見，巴士開走了，我無法控制的大哭，情緒整個崩潰，因為我好愛他們，好感謝他們這們貼心的照顧和包容。所以我說寄宿家庭是我最大的收穫。但回到了台灣，重新整理心情，原本沒企圖心的我，告訴自己，要多努力，我會在回去英國的！ 9855020A 陳幼綾學海獎學金遊學團 UK‐ University of Cumbria This is the first time I came to other country, and also two of my friends, study Occupational Therapy, the first time go abroad .Thus we were so exciting when we are in Kaohsiung Airport. I really want to say thank you to I-SHOU University, because you gave me the excellent chance to experience the different life, thank you! Host Family Actually, at beginning, my friend and I were so nervous about “host family”. Because we thought our English is so poor, and we don’t know how to talk to British, also we have to live together for four weeks! Before I came to England, I practice my English speak, and memorize lots of vocabulary, furthermore, I write down introduce about myself. But, when I came to England, I find it’s not necessary to do those things. Because you in England, you have no choice but speak English, so your English must improve a lot! I think I was so lucky to live with host family, because my home mother is good at cooking, and she always cook delicious dinner or made some biscuits or cakes for us. And they are humorous, thus we like to talk joke each other. Because they are very kind and friendly, thus we like to chat with them. When home mother is cooking, we like to help her cook and chat at the same time. At dinner time, we also share what we have learned from school, what happened today, usually funny things. I’m very treasure this special relationship, I think even if I could go abroad to study in the future, it’s hard to live with host family again. Thus I keep in touch with them when I come back to Taiwan. Study In our group, we didn’t study with other British or foreign students, at first, I think it’s pity that we can’t know other students, but after that, I found it much better because if we study with British students, obviously their English must be very fluent, that may cause our group don’t want to talk so positive, because we lack of confidence. What things tutor taught to us are, first, British manners, British think manners is very important, sometimes we think we are polite, but in UK, maybe they don’t think so. Such as, don’t ask people’s salary, it’s rude, if you took their pictures without permission, they have the right to delete those pictures. Second we learn how to pronounce correctly, if you say some words and you pronounce them wrong, it will be very funny, and you will be very embarrass. For example, tutor said onetime, a student goes to supermarket, he ask for a sheet, but the wrong pronounce, the clerk hear he said “shit”, what a horrible disaster! Last, we also share what we learn from British, this could be language you never hear before, culture you never experience. And share our thinking is my favorite part. Because we (another girl and me live in the same host family) learn lots of funny British language from host family. Such as: Beggars can not be choosers don’t be nosy and you are cruising for bruising. At last week, we had a presentation, which means at the past three weeks, we have to decide our subject, search information about our subject, to think how to speak English fluently, use correct sentence and grammar. The most important is, we must be very confident with presentation, we cannot be nervous. I chose “Current Fashion in UK”. Because I like fashion so much and I also like to observe what British wear. During prepare this presentation; I memorized lots of vocabulary about clothes. Such as jumpsuit、cardigan、leggings, and all kinds of patterns on clothes. I thought I will be very nervous and this is an 8~10 minutes presentation, I thought I’m not going to make it, but I did it! I talk about 22 minutes, yes, too long, but I’m so proud of myself. Culture I think British culture and Taiwanese culture just have a little bit difference, maybe because we are human beings, thus we have lots of common ground. I’m going to talk about the difference. First, I’m going to talk about British food. I found that British eat potato and tomato very often. Even if the dish is another food, they still add some tomato in there. They have three kinds of potato are mashed, roast and jacket potato. My host family usually has roast potato. The British traditional food must be “fish and chips.” they seldom use ketchup with chips; they often use salt and vinegar. ”Black pudding”, and black pudding is not dessert, it looks like sausage, made from animal blood. “pie” is also famous food. Everybody knows that British like to drink tea. Especially British tea. They like to add some milk in tea, without sugar. They like to eat curry, and I don’t know why. The interesting thing is, they eat curry usually with some mango jam in it, and I think it’s really amazing delicious! Second is about daily life. British were so polite, they always say thank you; sorry; please. Even if the stranger, they will smile to people and greet with them. In UK, they have a button for pedestrian, people just press it and wait a few seconds, traffic light will turn red, then you can go. When we are cross the road, even when the light not turn red yet, the driver will stop car and let us go, very gentle I think. Thus, I always in a good mood when I was in UK and I also became a polite people. Finally, British love to plant plants. Some family has garden to do the plant work, they very care about their garden and like people to compliment it. They also plant some vegetable and fruits to eat. If people doesn’t have garden, they can go to an “allotment”; a place can plant whatever you want, it costs 18 pounds per year. Travel During this four weeks. I only traveled to northern of UK. We went to Lancaster castle at first week. At first, I thought castle is a romantic place, but after I know this castle is also a prison, and it used to prison “witches” with extremely cruel punishment, I think I was wrong, the castle makes me fell scared and creepy. The first weekend, we went to Edinburgh. Edinburgh was so beautiful, very “Scotland”, because I saw many men wear “kilt”, traditional clothing, and looks like skirt. This is the first time I saw the street performance, I am so exciting, because they are so good to play tricky performance. Cashmere scarf is inexpensive here. Second week, we went to “Lake District”, where is famous because “Peter Rabbit”. Beatrix Potter was inspired by Lake District and then create Peter Rabbit and other characters. It was pity because this time we didn’t went to Ms. Potter’s house, we only go to William Worthword’s house, but luckily, my host family took us to Ms. Potter’s house on third week. Lake District is a really pretty place, when I was in here, I feel very relax and refresh. No wonder Ms. Potter can made such a wonderful masterpiece here. The second weekend, the school took us to Liverpool, we go to see the Beatles Museum. I found that many people who deeply love with rock in here. I thought the Beatles just their “god”, because when the museum play Beatles’ music, they just follow it to sing and pretend they are playing guitar, no matter they are young or old, women or men. Thus I think it was interesting and lovely. The third week we went to Manchester, first we go to Manchester United Stadium, Old Trafford. We visit the stadium, it’s really large stadium and beautiful. I almost can imagine when players came out, every audience cheers to their favorite team. And then we went to a place which let players to take a rest. After we visited Old Trafford, we go to shopping. Because Manchester is the second big city in UK, thus there are many shops, include high street shops, designer shops or department stores. The third weekend, we went to Williamson Park to see the play, Peter Pan. Peter Pan is a great fairytale, also one of my favorite stories. The performance was very special because it’s play outdoor, not on the screen and not in the theatre; they play it in the park! That why is was so special, and lots of people from different places go to see this performance. The play was so lovely and interesting; I even talk to the actor! I was so excited! The story was so touching; the end is not the same as film. I know the next performance is “Snow Queen”, they will play in this winter, I wish I’m in UK forever and I can see this one! Farewell In the end, no matter how much we don’t want to go back, we still have to go home. I won’t forget this summer vacation, I go to UK, live in Lancaster, meet lots of lovely and kind people, they make me feel they give me lots of love and care, from their heart. We the time we were take bus to leave, before that, I hug my host family so tight, and I say I will come back again. I hope they won’t forget me. When I take the bus, I just cried with strong grief. But after I came back to Taiwan, I feel calm. Before I went to UK, I just don’t have much ambitious. From then on, I decided to plan my life, I’m sure I will be back to UK again. 9855025a 陳怡靜學海研習報告英國坎布里亞大學旅遊者對每個去到的地方都是個介入者，那是一種短暫的交會，我們帶不走什麼，應該帶走的是變得更豐富的自己的心。這次出國遊學，受益匪淺，自己在各方面學到很多，尤其覺得在心靈程面上有了提升，學校之所以在學海獎學金上積極培養我們:「學海」無涯，知識學問是如此的浩瀚，因而要讀萬卷書；反過來說「海」外遊「學」卻能讓你行萬里路，擴展個人的國際視野、提昇第二外語能力並培養雍容的世界觀。海外遊學活動就是要看看別人、想想自己、學習長處並打開心胸，熟悉外語英語運用，接觸不同的文化風俗，以強烈的好奇心與觀察力，來學習如何面對問題，自我安置，累積經驗。讀萬卷書不如行萬里路，經過這次寶貴經驗的遊學後，我認識了很多新鮮事物，國際視野拓展許多，我們總是要走出去，才能更看清自己，包括自己承載的歷史文化。然而，前陣子看了專訪大前研一的報導：如何讓台灣變成生活大國？其中大前提出前瞻看法，值得政府、經濟、企業領袖，以及個人參考。他認為一個國家有三大繁榮武器──金錢、土地及人才。然而，在人才方面，他認為日本人從小為了升學，很認真念書，但開始工作之後，就不念書，沒有不斷投資自己的知識與智慧，是一件很可惜的事。譬如他建議人做知識生涯規劃時，在二、三十歲前加強自己的＂英語力＂、財務力、解決問題的能力，以及專精一、兩項樂器與體育技能的嗜好；四十歲以前，要想辦法在國外有五年以上的生活經驗，如此，才能有＂國際化能力＂。在四、五十歲左右，要勤於學習理財知識，讓自己的資產增值，並安排退休住宅，或在山明水秀之地，或到其他更便宜、安全、有良好的醫療保健的海外都市居住等等。然而，先前我看過一本書，書名是《比陽光燦爛，比雪潔淨──深入雲南、絲路、川藏》，其中作者提到「旅遊五模式」，旅遊學者柯亨（Eric Cohen）教授指出，旅遊依其心態和境界，可分成五種類型: 一是「休閒型」（Recreational mode），它是純好玩、度假、看風景、買土產二是「轉移型」（Diversionary mode），它是案牘勞形、生活倦怠後的到異國情調中散心與逃避三是「經驗型」（Experiential mode），指的是在一段時間裡，去經驗另外的生活方式四是「實驗型」（Experimental mode），指的是相當一段時間去過另一種生活，如美國青年到尼泊爾、不丹試著過另一種靈性生活等五是「實存型」（Existential mode），指的是把旅遊當作對人類基本存在情境進行反思的過程。儘管一般而言的旅遊，通常是休閒型，作者在這本《比陽光燦爛，比雪潔淨─ ─深入雲南、絲路、川藏》，正是這樣一本「實存型」的旅遊筆記。在台灣各式各樣寫旅遊的書裡，它獨樹一幟，顯得非常不同，他有過人的膽量敢夜宿蒼穹，他有豐富的知識-可以藉由星空位置算出日出的方位及時程，從兵馬俑古蹟一窺『發現權』與『主張權』的差異，而且在自己生病的情況下，還可以判斷自己的狀況-急性高原肺水腫。然而，這些若沒有豐富的知識後盾是不可能的，就如大前研一所說，日本人從小為了升學，很認真念書，但開始工作之後，就不念書，沒有不斷投資自己的知識與智慧，是一件很可惜的事，畢竟，生活到處都可以是學問，獲得的知識和智慧越多，運用越能伸縮自如。書中作者以自助遊走了一趟絲路、雲南和西藏，除了有自主旅遊的驚險、人與人互動的樂趣，以及山川景色的描述等內容外，還多了一種少有的人文關懷與自我反思成分。他把他這趟長途之旅日記式寫成一本書，在後記中提到，回台北那年，常在不經意間，會沒來由地想起遠疆的光影，會想起高原上的燦爛陽光、連綿雪山，想起村舍中飄著的燒炭味、公路上旋繞的引擎聲，或馬背上悠悠晃晃的節奏，想起鳴沙山吹著咧咧冷風的大漠日出，想起獨自走在帕米爾高原上的腳步聲，想到那種置身寬闊天地間，自己的渺小卑微。的確，當我們的視野越廣，越會感到自己的渺小，英國趨勢大師湯馬斯‧佛里曼著作的《世界是平的》中，更是讓我體會國際觀的重要性，只要有寬頻，只要有雄心，不管你在哪哩，都不會被邊緣化。競爭的立足點變平等了，但先前條件下，你必須掌握世界的趨勢，在 21 世紀才有競爭力。另外，最近逛了高中同學的網誌，教授對他們勉勵說，一個人要成功須有三力：潛力、實力、毅力。然而，潛力大家都有，實力現在沒有沒關係，從今開始培養永遠不嫌晚，至少有一點可確定，那就是現在的實力和十年後的實力不一定有關聯的；毅力是最大的變數，也是最重要的關鍵，但現在的你，是無法展現出來的，毅力只能從十年後的你的身上看出。這段話很振奮人心，如他所說的，潛力大家都有，實力現在沒有沒關係，從今開始培養永遠不嫌晚；我認為這好比這次出國遊學，我的英文實力，由於將近一年很少接觸英文，我的英文能力一落千丈，英文真是名副其實的"不進則退"，還記得遊學前前幾天，因怕語言溝通不好而心情很緊張複雜，趕緊惡補了英文一番。英國歡樂幸福旅回來之後，非常意猶未盡，且知道自己在英文能力上，進步空間還很大，＂實力現在沒有沒關係，從今開始培養永遠不嫌晚＂，這次遊學完後，促使我很大的動力去學英文，＂毅力是最大的變數，也是最重要的關鍵，但現在的你，是無法展現出來的，毅力只能從十年後的你的身上看出＂，我期許著自己大四有實力機會參加鷹揚計劃，在學途上更上一層樓，因為在國外那一年的收穫一定是很多也很值得的。有了目標、期許，在準備的過程中，伴隨而來的可能是壓力、挫折、甚至得失心。而我想分享的，去年哈佛最受歡迎的選修課是「幸福課」，聽課人數超過了王牌課《經濟學導論》。教這門課的是一位名不見經傳的年輕講師，名叫泰勒‧ 本－沙哈爾。在一周兩次的「幸福課」上，本－沙哈爾沒有大講特講怎麼成功，而是深入淺出地教他的學生，如何更快樂、更充實、更幸福。本－沙哈爾希望他的學生，學會接受自己，不要忽略自己所擁有的獨特性；要擺脫「完美主義」，要「學會失敗」。這句話說得很有道理，遇到挫折時，該學會自我調適。還記得在坎布里亞大學最後一個禮拜的主題報告，老師 Tania 教了我們英文報告一些該注意的事項，包括聲量、速度、流暢度、發音、抑揚頓挫、文法、和聽眾的眼神互動...等，且要我們彼此填寫報告回饋表，如此能知道自己報告的優缺點。而對於報告一直不是很擅長沒自信的我，報告時很緊張，覺得自己有點愚蠢好笑，但很高興有同學安慰我說:「很有個人特色阿你… 盡力就好！」之類的，的確，學會接受自己，不要忽略自己所擁有的獨特性；擺脫完美主義，學會失敗，得失心不要那麼重，心情就會健康快樂許多。接下來我想分享的是在英國的一些生活點滴在寄宿家庭裡，烘媽烘爸都很照顧我，看到我時總會和藹親切的微笑常關心問我說:「睡得好嗎? 房間舒適嗎? 今天在學校過得如何?...」等等。在寄宿家庭每天早餐吃的是鮮奶搭配穀物或土司，而晚餐常吃的料理是義大利麵醬料蓋飯馬鈴薯泥+2 香腸+紅蘿蔔片(英國的香腸跟台灣不一樣，鹹鹹的，感覺裡面參雜很多原料) 馬鈴薯泥+2 香腸+玉米粒馬鈴薯泥+花椰菜馬鈴薯泥+花椰菜+派馬鈴薯泥+花椰菜+豆醬漢堡+薯條+蛋糕漢堡+薯條+玉米粒薯條+2 小雞腿+豆醬我們邊看著電視坐在一起吃，用完餐後，烘媽會留下來陪我聊天英國的房子大部分是用木頭蓋的房間的門通常沒有門鎖，而我的 homestay 的廁所也沒門鎖，覺得有點意外，但也還好，也許彼此信任所以才不用門鎖。在英國走在街上，到處可以看到鴿子，牠們很不怕生，走路時一直點頭的樣子很可愛。另外，我覺得英國的建築都很漂亮，房子通常有很多煙囪，也許是因為冬天用火爐取暖的原因。想再分享的是英國的交通英國人交通大多搭乘大眾運輸、走路或開汽車，幾乎沒有摩托車，和台灣不一樣的是，行車靠左行駛，駕駛在右座，路人過馬路時路旁有手動紅綠燈按鈕，要主動去按它，且英國的駕駛都很紳士，總會禮讓行人，從不會爭先恐後。而每當搭乘英國的火車時，往外看去幾乎都是草原，草原上有很多幸福的羊兒或牛兒，感覺很閒情逸致。在學校上的課程包括有生活會話、社交常見用語、主題教材像英國的 pubs 或運動、經濟…等，另外，也教了英國的英標。至於戶外旅遊教學，活動的前一天，老師湯尼亞總會先給我們相關教材，讓我們先認識要去的地方、文化、該注意的事項等。去了很多地方觀光遊玩，以下我將日記式大約介紹: 一、 Bowerham Primary School 參訪了當地小學生上學，覺得教室比台灣 colorful，很溫暖有安全感，另外，覺得 UK 小孩禮貌、紳士、氣質多了，他們勇於表達，會舉手後才發言，當老師要他們注意時，她們會立刻配合老師，在台灣，非得要老師很兇打吼拍桌之類的，學生才會肅靜，一看就讓人感覺是很自律懂事的小孩，有時候，甚至覺得有些地方是需要向他們學習的。下課時他們會到廣場遊戲，不分年級不管認不認識，各個都很活潑玩在一起，上課分組報告時，很熱絡，小朋友上台報告時，似乎天生就那麼自信大方般地自然，很令人喜歡，從他們身上學到很多。二、Lancaster Castle 這座城堡就在蘭卡斯特市中心附近，有九百多年的歷史，它不只是一座城堡，也是間監獄，我們不能參觀全部的城堡，是因為裡面現在還關著犯人，所以只開放局部供我們參觀，我們參觀了他們的法庭、型具、牢房…等，有趣的是，解說員還讓我們親身體驗被關在監獄裡的滋味，然而，我被關在監獄裡的心得是，那真不是人的世界，簡直是地獄!牢房的門一關，瞬間變得烏漆巴黑，完全看不到任何東西，空氣也很糟糕，幾乎密不通風，解說員說，關在裡面的犯人大部分熬不過兩天就瘋掉了，牢房的門很明顯地都有他們抓過的痕跡，看得我都毛骨悚然了! 另外，由於城堡裡面不能拍照，且讓我很意外的是，抓到違規的話要被關兩年，所以大家僅在城堡外面拍照留紀念。三、Edinburgh 愛丁堡，是蘇格蘭的首府，這座城市從名字到外表和內容,都很徹底的美麗，一道天然的壕溝把愛丁堡城分成兩半,一邊是以皇家麥爾大道為代表的古城;一邊是以王子大街為代表的新城，而壕溝則成為了鐵道通過和火車站坐落的地方。穿梭於新老兩城的強烈反差,感覺有點恍惚,不知是迷失在麥爾大道斑駁的歷史裏,還是王子大街喧鬧的現實中。古城的街道基本上就是連接著的 Royal Mile 和 High Street, 一頭是 Edinburgh Castle,一頭是 Holyrood Palace,大石磚的街面,整潔乾淨.兩旁都是紀念品商店,whisky,蘇格蘭尼的裙子衣服,羊毛圍巾,Walkers 糕點……等。圖 1、走在古街小巷上，沉浸於悅耳的蘇格蘭風笛演奏。圖 234、愛丁堡美術館旁的廣場,有街頭藝人表演，附近的愛丁堡公園，也有很多人在那裡野餐，感覺很閒情逸致，讓人流連忘返。四、Lake District 我們從學校搭乘 coach 去湖區，Lake District，是英國的國家公園之一，也是著名的繪本畫家畢翠斯波創造出彼得兔的地方。有趣的是，當我們從波尼斯,搭乘渡輪至安布塞德,參訪英國浪漫詩人渥茲華斯的故居時，大家在渡輪上，爭相地和很像豆豆先生的船長和一位很帥的年輕副船長拍照，然而，我們在湖區小鎮裡買了些彼得兔紀念品，同時也買了那兒很有名的薑餅人點心。此外，湖區建築物的特色是用石板堆砌的房子或圍牆，這樣的房子是倫敦或其他大城市看不到的，且這裡的丘陵都很平緩，ㄧ路上會經過當地居民門前精心佈置的庭院，漫步於淳樸閒逸的湖區，讓人遠離城市的塵囂喧譁，盡情享受英格蘭鄉村的迷人風光。五、Liverpool 圖一是利物浦維多利亞女王的雕像，在蘭卡斯特也有，覺得在英國很常見到維多利亞女王的雕像。圖二是 Liverpool Cathedral 是紀念耶穌與聖母瑪利亞的教堂，充滿了中世紀的建築味道，很宏偉壯觀。圖三是利物浦有名的大會堂，周圍共有 12 座雕像，其中一座是維多利亞女王，其他的好像就是一些政商名人。圖四、港口旁有水陸兩用車供遊客乘坐，而附近也有像倫敦眼的摩天輪_ 利物浦眼。圖五、liverpool port 的 Albert Dock 商場，大多是紀念品店，也有美容店、咖啡廳、餐廳等。整體由紅磚建築繞成一個馬蹄形，一整圈都是具有利物浦海港特色的商店，航海旗、由船上的錨或舵做成的日常用品、披頭四的紀念品…等。圖六、利物浦一大賣點_披頭四的故鄉，披頭四的博物館"The Beatles Story"，裡面展出他們以前的手稿吉他工作室等相關紀念物。六、Morecambe 早上和文平坐公車去摩肯，車坐過頭，還好我們有帶地圖，順利走到目的地。十點多去還很少人，我們先去沙灘邊堆沙堡，中午過後人潮熱鬧多了，在摩肯雕像附近有表演節目，騎單輪車耍刀的、樂隊、還有雕沙藝術表演。之後我們去逛那兒的商店，那裡的東西普遍比其他地區便宜，聽 Tonia 說，摩肯比以前較沒落七、曼城要去曼城的前一天，老師 Tania 準備了一些資料給我們，包括曼城的歷史背景、前十大觀光景點、有名的大型商場…等。工業革命期間使曼徹斯特自十八世紀起成為工業城市，大量紡織廠在此設立。自二十世紀初因經濟大衰退，曼徹斯特的工業開始受到影響，第二次世界大戰中曼徹斯特的重工業設施受到納粹德國的嚴重轟炸和破壞。戰後的曼徹斯特工業開始式微，但曼市的大城市地位依舊不變。近十年來曼市的市貌變化很大，大量在 1960 年代前興建的樓房都被拆毀，以新式建築物取代，而舊廠亦改建成住宅公寓。此外，曼城是個很好購物的地方，有很多有名的百貨公司或名牌店…等，附近也有大教堂、藝廊、博物館…可以免費參觀。而去了曼徹斯特商政中心外，還去了曼聯足球場，曼聯主球場——老特拉福德球場（Old Trafford Stadium）則是英格蘭地區的最大球會足球場，我們在裡面參觀了球場、球員的休息室、曼聯博物館…等。 9855025a Yi-Ching Chen Presentation of Travel Study in the UK I really had a good time traveling study in the UK. The University of Cumbria tried their best to plan a very intensive programme, which includes English language lessons, cultural visits, social outings and interaction with the local community for us. Also, they arranged home-stay accommodation for us so that we can experience the British way of life. The idea is that you become a member of a family and the more you join in with this, the more you will get from the experience. By the way, I really had had a nice stay with my host family though my English is rubbishy. It’s a pleasure having the precious chance to get along with them. Because I think they both are nice to me. They usually smiled friendly when I talked to them, which made me felt free to contact them any time with any problems or questions I had. Now, I’d like to tell you about what happened or something interesting in the UK. Firstly, I will talk about the English language lessons I had at the University of Cumbria, which includes Everyday English, Social English, etiquette, culture of the UK such as pubs, sports…and so on. Secondly, I’d like to tell you about cultural visits I enjoyed very much, such as the Lake District, Manchester. Finally, I want to discuss something thoughtful. Actually, I think the courses I took in the UK are all helpful, also, there are some lessons that really interesting and unforgettable. Such as the following topics, A world guide to good manners: How not to behave badly abroad Travelling to all corners of the world gets easier and easier. We live in a global village, but how well do we know and understand each other? Here is a simple test. Imagine you have arranged a meeting at four o’clock. What time should you expect your foreign business colleagues to arrive? If they‘re German, they‘ll be bang on time. If they’re American, they’ll probably be 15 minutes early. If they’re British, they’ll be 15 minutes late. And you should allow up to an hour for the Italian. When the European Community began to increase in size, several guidebook appeared giving advice on international etiquette. For example, the British are happy to have a business lunch and discuss business matters with a drink during the meal, however, the Japanese prefer not to work while eating. Lunch is a time to relax and get to know one another, and they rarely drink at lunchtime. Pubs The word pub is short for public house. Pubs are an important part of British life. People talk, eat, drink, meet their friends and relax there. Pubs often have two bars, one usually quieter than the other, many have a garden where people can sit in the summer. Children can go in pub gardens with their parents. Groups of friends normally buy 'rounds' of drinks, where the person whose turn it is will buy drinks for all the members of the group. It is sometimes difficult to get served when pubs are busy: people do not queue, but the bar staff will usually try and serve those who have been waiting the longest at the bar first. If you spill a stranger's drink by accident, it is good manners (and prudent) to offer to buy another drink. Most pubs belong to a brewery (a company which makes beer) but sell many different kinds of beer, some on tap (from a big container under the bar) and some in bottles. The most popular kind of British beer is bitter, which is dark and served at room temperature (not hot, not cold). British beer is brewed from malt and hops. More popular today though is lager, which is lighter in colour and served cold. Guinness, a very dark, creamy kind of beer called a stout, is made in Ireland and is popular all over Britain. In the West of England, cider made from apples, is very popular. Like wine, it is described as sweet or dry, but is drunk in beer glasses and can be stronger than beer. Beers are served in "pints" for a large glass and "halves" for a smaller one. Sports in Britain Sports play an important part in the life in Britain and is a popular leisure activity. Many of the world's famous sports began in Britain, including cricket, football, lawn tennis, golf and rugby. England's national sport is cricket although to many people football (soccer) is seen as their national sport. Football is their most popular sport. Some of England's football teams are world famous, the most famous being Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. Cricket Teams are made up of 11 players each. They play with a ball slightly smaller than a baseball and a bat shaped like a paddle. Two batters stand in front of wickets, set about 20 metres apart. Each wicket consists of three wooden rods (stumps) pushed into the ground, with two small pieces of wood (bails) balanced on top. A member of the opposing team (the bowler) throws the ball towards one of the batters, who must hit the ball so that it does not knock a bail off the wicket. If the ball travels far enough, the two batters run back and forth between the wickets while the fielders on the opposing team try to catch the ball. The game is scored according to the number of runs, which is the number of times the batters exchange places. Football (soccer) Football is undoubtedly the most popular sport in England, and has been played for hundreds of years. In the English Football League there are 92 professional clubs. These are semi-professional, so most players have other full-time jobs. Hundreds of thousands of people also play football in parks and playgrounds just for fun.The highlight of the English football year is the FA (Football Association) Cup Final each May. What do British people like doing at the weekends ? The weekends are a time for families in Britain. Often the parents are not at work having worked a five day week from Monday to Friday. Saturdays are a busy time for shops with many families going shopping. Sundays used to be a very special day of the week in Britain. It was the one day of the week for 'worship and rest'. The shops were closed and most people were at home or at church. Popular leisure activities on Sunday used to be going to church and doing odd jobs around the home such as gardening and DIY. Like our Taiwanese, people enjoy various indoor and outdoor activities in Britain. An Euro stat survey, the EU's statistical office, discovered that people in Britain spend about 45% of their free time watching television, 24% of their free time socializing, 22-23% on sport and hobbies, and 10% on other activities. Other popular leisure activities are listening to the radio, listening to pre-recorded music, reading, DIY, gardening, eating out and going to the cinema. Next, I want to tell you about the trips I enjoyed in UK. Trip to the Lake District One of Britain’s most beautiful areas.First of all head to Brockhole Visitors’ Centre on the edge of the largest of the lakes, Windermere. There I can find information about the Lake District, a café, a gift shop and beautiful gardens. After a short stay, we walked down to the lake and take a boat to Ambleside, the village at the top of the lake. We took a bus to Ambleside campus, which is in the heart of the village as we got off the boat. We went shopping and had lunch there. After lunch, we got on the bus and went on to another nearby lake-Grasmere. One of the reasons people go to the Lake District is to walk in the beautiful scenery, so we also walked along the side of the lake to Grasmere village. Then, the bus picked up us again here and took us to visit Dove Cottage, the home of one of England’s most famous poets, William Wordsworth. We visited his house to hear about his life also to see how people lived at this time. Here is a famous poetry wrote by William Wordsworth Daffodil I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. A poem can stir all of the senses, and the subject matter of a poem can range from being funny to being sad. What this poem teaches me is that to appreciate the beauty of nature in spite of problems and any pressures we are experiencing. Manchester On this trip, we visited the home ground of Manchester United football team (Old Trafford) and had a tour of the museum and the stadium. Manchester United is one of the most famous football teams in the world and, even if you are not a particular fan of football, this visit is very interesting indeed. There is also a shop that sells all sorts of Manchester United branded items. Manchester- one of the UK’s largest cities, lies at the heart of the County of Greater Manchester.The settlement was founded 2000 years ago by the future Roman Emperor Agricola, who built a fortress named Mamucium (meaning 'breast-shaped hill') after the distinctive shape of the rocky outcrop on which it stood. It wasn't until the 18th century that Manchester came to world-wide prominence as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The area saw the rapid growth of factories producing mechandise for the textile industry and it remained preminent until the 1950s, when foreign imports devasted the cotton industry. Manchester's wealthy past means that it is home to many architectural showpieces, including its greatest monument the Manchester Town Hall, a neo-Gothic masterpiece, built in 1877. Manchester's recent regeneration, especially following the 1996 IRA bombing of the city centre, has resulted in many striking modern buildings such as Urbis (Manchester's Centre for Urban Culture) and some stunning conversions of older buildings including the Corn Exchange and G-Mex. Because of its central position with the UK the city is a great base for tourism. By the way, with its unique mix of world famous department stores, designer shops and individual traders, Manchester is the region’s Number One when it comes to shopping. And there are also top 10 things to do in Manchester, such as The Town Hall, The Cathedral, Chetham’s Library and School of Music,Long Millgate , John Ryland’s Library,Deansgate , Castlefield,Urban Heritage Park , Museum of Science and Industry,Castlefield , The Royal Exchange,Cross Street (lift in St Anns Square) , Manchester United Museum and Tour,Sir Matt Busby Way,Manchester , Manchester Art Gallery , Urbis. Finally, I want to share something thoughtful. Tourists are usually the interventions wherever they go, though it’s just a short rendezvous, they can’t take away anything but the abundant harvest in their hearts. What the purpose of overseas study tour is to be open-minded learning foreigners’ merits, also, thinking about our shortcomings. In addition, we can have the chance to be familiar with the use of the language, experiencing the different cultural customs. Last but not least, to extend our view of the world and to try our best to enhance abilities as possible. 黃子育 9710100A 學海研習報告─英國坎布里亞大學在我的人生裡，從未想過會出國，但是在我二十歲的這年暑假，我出國了！而且第一次出國竟然是大家夢寐以求的英國！這一天，展開了我的旅程…… 七月十七日，帶著興奮又緊張的心情踏上了英國之旅。記得小時候搭過一次飛機，但那一次是去金門，而這次是真的出遠門了，也是第一次離家裡那麼遠又那麼久。跟家人在小港機場道別之後，在候機室等著延遲半小時的飛機，順便認識了未來要相處一個月的同學；之後在香港轉機，經過了漫長的十二個小時，到了倫敦機場，因為之後要再搭飛機到曼徹斯特，所以只在倫敦機場逗留了三十分鐘，到了曼徹斯特又要再搭車到蘭開斯特，一個小時的車程，疲憊的大家在車上一下子就睡著了；到了目的地時，外面卻下著大雨，天氣不太好，看來英國天氣真的不穩定；英國的夏天氣溫就像我們的冬天一樣，好冷！和外國人相處的日子…… 在學校和我寄宿家庭的家人見了面，帶我回家之後，介紹了他們的小孩，也泡了熱熱的可可讓我暖一下身子，家裡除了我之外還有兩個寄宿生，一個法國人、一個西班牙人，讓家裡變得好熱鬧、很多元，就像聯合國一般。第一天到學校老師帶我們逛了一下校園，之後到了附近的商店逛逛，學校就在市區附近還蠻熱鬧的，和同學順便逛了一下；回家吃完晚餐之後，拿出要給寄宿家庭的禮物，我送台灣原住民的手工藝品給他們，他們好開心喔！第二天去了小學學校參觀，很多可愛的小朋友，他們在沒有任何遊樂設施的大廣場也可以玩得很開心，就算不認識的同學也可以完成一塊，跟小朋友相處了一天，也跟著他們上課，讓我們見識到外國小朋友和台灣小朋友上課的不同，他們很尊重老師，老師只要喊一二三，沒有人會聊天，要發言也一定會舉手，大家上課都很踴躍的參與，站在台上表演一點也不會覺得害羞，跟台灣的小學生真的很不同。上課的日子…… 一到五早上九點到下午三點半是我們的上課時間，在這個短短的一個月裡，雖然時間很短，但是相信大家都有學到東西的，我們被美式英語灌輸得太久了，接觸到英式英語還蠻有趣的，上了很多不同用法的單字，除此之外，老師每個禮拜還要求我們觀察英國和台灣文化不同的地方以及用語的不同；每次要出去玩的前一天就會做功課，老師會介紹當地有名的一些景點，方便讓我們當天去參觀，隔一天上課則是讓我們分享自己的心得；有時候還會安排一些戶外課程，帶我們參觀附近有名的建築物已集介紹當地的歷史，那我們學到了很多，雖然有時候大家不是完全都聽的懂，但是猜猜意思還是會學到東西，在這段日子裡，我學到很多。蘭開斯特城堡蘭開斯特城堡已經有好幾百年的歷史了，老師和寄宿家庭的家人都說來到蘭開斯特絕對不能錯過這個城堡，去參觀城堡那天是個超級好天氣，大家都拿出了像機拍照，只可惜進去參觀城堡時是不可以拍照的，這城堡特別是 ─ 它是一間監獄，現在裡面還是關著一些罪犯，而我們參觀的只是城堡裡的意小小部分，參觀了裡面的法庭、刑具、會議室、牢房……等等，裡面每件事物都超過好幾百年了，參觀到牢房時，解說員說可以體會被關在又小又黑又暗密不通風的牢房裡，解說員也說沒有一個男人可以被關兩天以上，聽起來就好恐怖阿！我不敢進去體會，聽同學說裡面真的很暗，而且我也在門上看到了好多抓痕；參觀會議室時，裡面的書、桌椅都已經超過兩百多年了呢！愛丁堡和同學一起到火車站準備要去愛丁堡，一路上在火車上一直看著窗外，外面都是綠油油的一片，都是農場，養了牛、羊、馬，風景都好漂亮，只可惜天氣不太好，做了兩個小時半的車程，終於到愛丁堡了！一出愛丁堡車站，「哇！好漂亮！」在心中吶喊著，真的好美麗喔！到處都是古建築物，每棟建築物上都會刻上它的出生年，好多都已經超過一百多年了！感謝老天作美，天氣轉晴了，讓愛丁堡變得更漂亮，逛了一下公園，到處都是漂亮的花多配上綠油油的草地，走在公園裡都會有種閒情逸致的感覺，好悠閒阿！之後去了畫廊，裡面的畫作都好大，就像會在歷史課本會出現的那種，都是很有歷史的畫作了；走在街上都可以看到街頭藝人，有些穿著蘇格蘭最有名的蘇格蘭裙吹著風笛，有些在作畫、彩繪，有些在演樂器，有好多好多的街頭藝人；之後還參觀了一間教堂，好漂亮的教堂，很漂亮的玻璃窗，這一趟下來消耗了不少相機的容量，每一個事物都不想放過，都想捕捉起來，我的相機拍到沒電了呢！愛丁堡真的是個很漂亮的地方。利物浦搭了一個小時多的車程後，終於到了利物浦，發現那裡的建築物跟蘭開斯特不太一樣，蘭開斯特有些是用石頭建造而成的，而利物浦則是用磚頭建造而成的比較多。那天的天氣不太好，下著小雨，雖然很多攤販，但是不方便逛街，還好雨下了一下子就停了，跟同學拿著地圖亂逛，最後決定去參觀一間老教堂，一路上一直拿著相機拍著特別的建築物，還發現了中國城，走了一段路後，遠遠就看到那間又大又老的教堂，真的好大！一走進教堂，真是讓人嘖嘖稱奇，真的很宏偉，玻璃窗好大好漂亮，在那間教堂裡拍了不少照片。下午的行程要到披頭四博物館參觀，之前雖然聽過這團體的歌，但是對他們不太了解，進去參觀了解後，才知道原來他們這麼紅！紅到可以暴動的程度！來到利物浦不能不知道的就是披頭四，也一定要參觀了解一下。曼徹斯特曼徹斯特的建築物又和蘭開斯特、利物浦的不太一樣，那裡很熱鬧，所以多了很多高的建築物，那裏是個購物中心，是個很好購物的地方，也是女孩愛去的地方，我們在那裡花了不少錢呢！好多紀念品都在那裡解決了。還去參觀曼聯球場，第一次進足球場，我好興奮！還進去球員們的休息室及更衣室參觀，真是太酷了！沒想到我會有機會在足球球員的休息室和更衣室參觀，就好像可以跟他們處在同一空間裡一樣，想到這就會很開心，之後還去曼聯球場的博物館參觀，裡面滿滿的都是獎杯、球衣、足球及他們的簽名，也在那裏買了紀念品，真的很開心可以參觀球場。威廉森公園的戶外劇場第一次在公園裡看舞台劇。這是蘭開斯特最特別的戲院，通常都是在室內看舞台劇，但是這裡每年暑假都會在公園裡演出不同的故事，每一幕都會換場景，所以觀眾也要隨著演員們換場景而在公園裡遊走，大家會帶著自己了椅子、零食、飲料到現場看戲，是一個很特別的經驗，而這個暑假是演「彼得潘」，由於演員人數少，所以有些人都要一人分飾兩個角色，讓我很佩服演員們，要趕著換場景也要換角色演出，從六點看到十點，還有中場休息，大家的心情也會隨著劇情高低起伏，這真的是非常特別的體驗。在英國…… 在英國除了文化大不同，還有一些該適應的事物，因為地理位置和台灣不同，當然天氣也不同，英國的天氣不穩定，對我們來說，下雨就會很冷，出太陽就會很溫暖，也因為緯度比較高的關係，晚上九點才開始天黑，剛到那裡的時候，還有點不習慣呢！還有英國的車的行駛方向和台灣相反，過馬路時都要特別注意，還有一件大不同的就是飲食，聽去過英國的人都說英國食物很難吃，但是對我來說，那只是不習慣而已，但是對我來說，還不至於難吃，只是還是會想念台灣的食物，很慶幸的是，我的寄宿家庭很會料理，也煮了兩三次的米飯讓我吃，很好吃！可能因為不是在大都會區的關係，蘭開斯特的商店除了餐廳之外，其他商店都會在五點半左右就關店了，所以要購物，動作就要快！到那裡如果覺得物價很貴的話，可以到二手商店買，最重要的是買二手的前都是捐給弱勢團體的，買東西又可以幫助人，豈不是一舉兩得嗎？在寄宿家庭裡，也跟寄宿家庭的家人聊了很多，他們對我很照顧，和媽媽、妹妹一起去看電影，還體驗了在外國開轟趴的感覺，也一起幫寄宿家庭的家人慶生，為了珍惜跟他們相處的時間，也跟妹妹和鄰居小朋友一起玩遊戲，家裡一直都很熱鬧，讓我覺得一點都不無聊，在這段時間裡，有好多的人照顧我，很感謝他們，我也不會忘記他們對我的好，我會把這一切的美好回憶長存在我心中。黃子育 9710100A University of Cumbria July 17th was the beginning of my traveling. I never thought that I would go abroad, but in this summer vacation, I went to England where was the place many people wanted to go. I went abroad at the age of twenty; therefore, it became more special in this summer. I remembered that I had taken airplane as I was a child, but this time is my first time to take airplane to foreigner country. And this was the first time that I was far away from my family for a month. As I said good bye to my family, my UK journey was beginning. After the long flight, I arrived at London Airport finally. Then I took airplane again to Manchester. Fortunately, it was not a long flight. Afterward, I had to take the bus to University of Cumbria. However, the weather was not good, and I felt cold. It was raining. Finally, I arrived at University of Cumbria. I was nervous because it was time to see my host family. After I met my host family, they took me to their home which I had to stay for one month. There were five people in my host family. The father is Phil, and the mother is Vel. They have three children, Zac, Rory and Rose. Besides, except me, there were two students in the house. One is from France, and another is from Spain. In this family, I felt that it was just like the United Nations. And I expected that I would have wonderful days with them during this one month. The first day in school, our teacher, Tania, brought us to recognize the campus. And in the afternoon, we took a walk to some shops, post office, book store and so on. Our campus was in a convenient location. Then I gave my host family some handiwork accessories from Taiwan’s aborigine after we finished the dinner. I was so happy that they liked those accessories. We went to primary school on the second day. I could not wait to see those cute students. I learned a lot from them. They could have a lot of fun without any amusement facility. They could still play happily on the playground. Even they did not know each other very well, they could still play together. And they also liked that we joined them. We had class with them as well. I found that there are something different from Taiwan’s students. They would be quiet as teachers counted “one, two, three!” They respected teachers. They must raise their hands when they had something to say. What’s more, they did not feel shy to perform in front of everyone. It was so different from Taiwan’s students. We had to go to have class at 9 am to 3pm on Monday to Friday during this month. Although it was a short time, but I believe that we had learn many things. We know a lot vocabulary which was used were different from America. It was interesting to me. And we also learned different culture between England and Taiwan. Moreover, we had visited many places during this month so that I learn a lot in these days. Lancaster Castle Teacher and host family said that we could not miss this place if we were in Lancaster. The Lancaster Castle had hundreds years history. We were so happy that we could visit Lancaster Castle. Everyone brought their camera. Unfortunately, we could not take photos in the castle. However, it was a special castle. It was also a prison. And there were still criminals in the castle. We saw the court, meeting room, the instrument of torture, jail and so on. There were many things over hundreds years. It was a special experience because there was no castle in Taiwan. Edinburgh We took train to the Edinburgh. On the way to Edinburgh, there were many farms out of the window. And there were a lot of cows, sheep, and horses. The view was beautiful. After the two hours, we arrived at Edinburgh finally. “Wow! It’s so beautiful!” There was a sound in my body as I left the railway and saw the beautiful view of Edinburgh. There were a lot of buildings, and there were times carved on the buildings so that we could know that how old the building was. I went to a beautiful park which was near the railway. There were a lot of beautiful and lovely flowers with bright green grasslands. It seemed that I was in a picture. I felt free in that park. After that, I went to a gallery. In the gallery, there were many paintings, and some of them we could found in our history textbook. Afterward, I went to a church, I saw the colorful glass windows. I also saw a lot street performers as I walk on the street. Edinburgh was so beautiful that my camera was out of battery. If I had chance, I would go to Edinburgh again. Liverpool When we arrived at Liverpool, I found that the buildings were different from the buildings in Lancaster. In Lancaster, some buildings were constructed by stones, but the buildings in Liverpool were constructed by brick. It was raining, but fortunately, it just rained for a while. I followed the map’s instruction to go to an old cathedral with classmate. On the way to the cathedral, we also found the China Town. Then we walked for a while, we found the old cathedral. The cathedral was macroscopic. As I entered the cathedral, I felt excited. The cathedral was so beautiful, and the glass windows were big, colorful and beautiful. I took a lot of photos in that cathedral because I did not want to miss any part of it. In the afternoon, we were going to the Beatles Museum. Although I knew this bank and I had listened to some of their songs, I did not know them very well. After visiting the Beatles Museum, I knew that how popular they were. This museum could not be missed when you visited Liverpool. Manchester In Manchester, the buildings were different from Lancaster and Liverpool. It was a shopping centre. And I thought that it was a good place for girls to go shopping. I bought a lot of things in Manchester. Furthermore, we went to Manchester United. I was so excited because it was my first time to go to football field. We also entered players changing room. After that, we went to the football museum in the Manchester United. It was a special experience. Williamson Park’s Peter Pan This was the special theatre in Lancaster because they performed in the Williamson Park. Each year in summer vacation, they would perform some drama in this park. The most special was that every act would change places to perform so that actors, actress, and audience had to move in the park. The audience would bring their chair to sit and bring something to eat or drink. Because the actor was few, some of them had to act two characters. This summer’s play was “Peter Pan”. This was a very special experience to me. In this month, I learned a lot. There were a lot of things different from Taiwan because of culture different. And everyday and everything was special and new to me. In England, the weather was cold to me although it was in summer vacation. The latitude in England was higher than Taiwan so that the weather was getting dark after 9 pm. And many people said that the food in England was not very delicious. However, to me, it was not terrible. Fortunately, my host family was good at cooking. The food that they cooked was delicious. During these days, I chatted with them a lot, and they took good care of me a lot. I went to cinema with Vel and Rose. I join Rory’s birthday celebration. I played with Rose and neighbor’s kids. I did not feel boring at all. I was appreciated that there were many taking care of me. I wound not forget them. They would always in my mind. Isu9877010a 國經二黃雅蘭讀萬卷書不如行萬里路,這趟學海之行不只增加了自己的視野,也大大的增廣了我的國際觀。能夠考上學海,我實在太驚訝了！出國念書是從小到大的夢想，雖然只有一個月，但所獲得的東西已經不能用時間來衡量。寄宿家庭的生活，在這一個月中更是令人難忘。住宿期間，體驗到西方人的大方有趣與開明。我所寄宿的家庭有四個人與一隻貓，爸爸媽媽一個七歲女兒與一個嬰兒。爸爸算是非裔英國人來自辛巴威，媽媽雖是英國人，卻常到處旅行。英國的房屋令人驚嘆，麻雀雖小五臟俱全，小小的木造房屋猶如置身於故事書中，在屋子裡行走時不論腳步多輕吱喳吱喳聲宛如伴奏般不絕於耳，清脆而不吵雜。走入屋裡，映入眼簾的盡是溫馨的家庭合照，有別於東方家庭單調的擺飾，不論牆上、門上、樓梯間、客廳或廚房，大大小小的照片點綴於小小的屋子中。令人意外的是，牆上的照片並非一成不變，照片會不定期更換有時剩至會看到爸爸又在房裡敲敲打打，掛上更多的相框，每一天的生活都有不同的驚喜，也因此有更多的話題與機會更親近與了解我的家人。大門進來便是我的房間，房間的裝潢樸實又大方，房裡的壁爐雖沒在使用已變成裝飾，但依舊能讓整個房間看似溫暖許多，房間的窗戶正對著大馬路，人來人往的車輛與行人成了我在房裡消磨時間的樂趣。西方人與東方人教育方式的差別在我進入屋裡沒多久就深深的體會到了。正在學習走路的小嬰兒總在家裡四處摸索，東爬西爬，一下這邊跌一下那邊摔，看到新奇古怪或神祕的東西便往嘴裡塞，如是東方家庭看見小孩跌倒便是衝過去猶如玻璃摔破般緊張，一看到小孩撿東西往嘴裡塞，便又大聲斥責；不知道是因為爸爸媽媽年輕還真的是教育方式的不同，不論孩子做了什麼，大人們依舊悠閒的喝著自己的咖啡看著報紙，各做各的事，摔倒了便讓他自己爬起來，亂吃東西便等他自己吐出來，最令我映像深刻的便是當我從廚房走出時看到小嬰兒咬著我放在玄關的鞋子爬來爬去，我一邊驚嚇一邊緊張的把鞋子搶走，但只看到爸媽若無其事的跟我說抱歉，便又繼續看著報紙彷彿我太大驚小怪般，從此之後，我便決定鞋子要放在房裡，免得哪天鞋子破了個洞也不意外。陰雨綿綿是最適合用來形容英國的天氣，綿綿細雨綿到感覺不出有在下雨，但不到五分鐘，保證全身濕透。英國的天氣平均兩天雨天一天晴天，不論雨天或晴天，氣溫依舊偏低。令人好奇的是，英國明明常下雨，但每當下雨時卻又不見英國人撐傘，可能是嫌麻煩，但感覺他們已習以為常。英國的晴天真的能用秋高氣爽來形容，冷冷的天氣，太陽照在身上格外溫暖，彷彿一件無形的大衣披在身上，但他們的晴天對我們來說依舊微涼，因此學校大使 Mike 常問我們為何不脫掉外套，顯然他不知道這裡的夏天對我們來說跟冬天沒兩樣!但感覺得出他們真的很珍惜有陽光的時間，在城鎮裡遊走時，太陽出來的日子便能看到城裡多了不少人，彷彿都在吸取陽光的精華。牛牽到北京還是牛，在台灣常迷路的我，到了英國依舊不失自己的本色，找路的時間都比逛街的時間多，鎮上的小巷特多，每個角每個彎看起來都一樣，不事先做好功課，隨身攜帶地圖，迷路便會變成家常便飯。第一天到小鎮後，Mike 讓我們各自坐公車回家，老實說當下的我也不知道我家到底是在哪一站，只知道在坎布里亞大學附近，公車的終點站寫著 University，我在感覺像家裡附近的站下車，下車後只管一直往前走，尋找像我家的地方，當天傾盆大雨，風也特別強，撐著傘依舊會淋到雨，半淋著雨的走了快一個小時，依舊不知道自己在哪裡，後來決定上公車，做到終點站，等公車時格外覺得無助，人生地不熟的，才第二天就迷路，沒聯絡家裡的電話，手機快沒電，公車不來，路上沒人，店家都關門了，朋友電話也不通，當時又冷又寂寞只能看著一輛輛車子呼嘯而過，想坐計程車回家也不知道家裡地址，天色漸漸暗了下來，等了快半個多小時公車終於來了，當我放下心想說可以回家時，才知道大事不妙，路邊景色依舊陌生，原來終點站的 University 不是 University of Cumbria 而是 Lancaster University。趕緊再連絡朋友的我，終於問到了家裡的電話，趕緊叫家人來帶我回家。從鎮上走到家裡差不多半小時的路程，結果我花了將近三個小時的時間才回到家，當天還是爸爸的生日，幸好烏龍的一天終於平安落幕。隔天我出門時，看看家裡四周，才發現原來昨天我公車有下對站，而且我家前面就是公車站，代表我過家門而不入一點都認不出自己家裡長什麼樣子，看來我糊塗的天賦在那天真的是發揮到林立盡致。在英國的日子可說是充實又悠哉，充分的體會到了 Lancaster 這個小鎮的美，每天過著九點上課三點下課外出探險到五點半店家關門，再回家出晚餐，稍做休息後便出門散步，直到太陽下山後便回家洗澡睡覺的極規律生活。下課後的行動便是坐著公車到處趴趴走，Morecambe、town、Brough、1795……，Morecambe 美麗的海邊，沒行程便在 town 四處亂走，在 Brough 酒吧裡想點個啤酒喝，但因為菜單都看不懂，到最後大家都只好點柳橙汁加薯條(因此下定決心好好背單字)，在 1795 餐廳拿翻譯機出來一個字一個字查，一邊猜菜單上的菜色，結果最後還是點錯餐點，就這樣吃了一頓不便宜的晚餐；每天每天不同卻又類似的戲碼不斷上演，每天每天都會因為環境的陌生惹出不少笑話，每天每天都試著讓自己的眼睛捕捉更多更美的景色，最重要的是每天每天都試著讓自己講更多的英文。每個星期三與星期六是最期待的日子，是難得可以離開小鎮到別的地方看看的好機會，Bowerham Primary School visit 彷彿自己也回到了年幼的時候，雖然跟小朋友常常溝通不順，但彼此雞同鴨講依然可以玩的不亦樂乎。Lancaster Castle 做若於市中心，城堡般雄偉的建築物竟是犯人的監獄!被關在地牢裡，驚悚又刺激，刺激歸刺激，但我下定決心不要做壞事，地牢好恐怖，我可不想一輩子待在那種地方。令我意外的是，犯人在地牢裡還有菜單可以點餐!雖然解說員說的很多都聽不懂，但自己天馬行空的猜測更有趣!英國的保齡球很不一樣，有讓我這種運動白癡也能不洗溝快樂打保齡球的防洗溝架，小朋友也能輕鬆玩保齡球的推球架，好多沒見過的東西，區區保齡球，原來也有這麼多玩法，可惜天候不佳，無法在 Morecambe 的海邊散步。愛丁堡很美麗，一邊是城堡區另一邊則是購物天堂，剛好遇到愛丁堡的國際藝術節，到處都能看到如馬戲團般的街頭表演，好不熱鬧。美麗的 Lake District 雖然發生意外沒搭上預定的船隻，但塞翁失馬焉知非福，下一艘船的船長長的像豆豆先生，副手是年輕的帥哥，逗得大家一邊開心的跟豆豆船長先生拍照，一邊害羞又興奮的跟年輕副手帥哥索照。The Beatles 的故鄉 Liverpool，原以為只是個無聊的博物館，沒想到館內的東西既豐富又有趣!變裝遊戲很好玩，原本對 Beatles 沒興趣的我，回家後便開始認真搜索 The Beatles 的音樂。好多好多說不完的事情，每天都帶著許許多多的驚嘆入眠，雖說國外的月亮比較圓，但他不是圓的沒有道理，乾淨的空氣、整潔的街道、禮貌的行人與駕駛人、便捷的運輸工具......太多太多台灣不及的地方，這短短的一個月，不僅是語言上的磨合，更是文化上的大衝擊! Isu9877010a 國經二黃雅蘭 I am very grateful to the school can give us the excellent opportunity to study tour. Although just one month, what we learned in this period could not be measure by time. In this month, the most memorable thing is the time in the host family. During the time I experience different lifestyle between west and east family, no matter living habits, food, the way education their child and the decorating of the house, all the stuffs gave me a big surprised. I am very surprised that my host parents gave lots of freedom to me that I could live there as living in my hometown. I though I have the best host family during the month. The food they cooked is so testy! I looked forward to my dinner every day. They recommended some great place that I could go and in case of I would get lose, they always show the map or even drove me there. In the dinner time we would talk about what happened today, and they always told some funny things about their family happened before in the dinner time, I always felt full after my dinner. In the weekend, they took me to the forest in the Lake district, we hiked in the forest to having the fresh air and the beautiful scenery. After hiking the forest, I play in the playground with their children. I have a long time didn’t play in the playground! Surprisingly, I am excited about that, I have a great time with their children in the playground. I even had British afternoon tea after playing in the playground with my host family. I really had a great time with my host family. As for me, Lancaster is a town within convenient, beautiful building and landscape. Although it is very cold, the enthusiasm of the people are always warm my heart. I am very surprised that whenever I took up my map to make sure whether I am in the right direction, the stranger around us would come to help us find the right way initiatively. I am very appreciate that we had bus ticket, it let us went where we want to go. The quality of the bus is very well, I am very surprised that dogs can go on the bus, in Taiwan, only guide dog can go on the bus, and the design of the bus is kind for disabled persons. I like the arrangement of the school curriculum, we can went out at Wednesday and Saturday. Before we went out, teacher would give us time to search information and map that we can have travel arrangement by ourselves. At the first day, we have an interesting Lancaster game, it let us know Lancaster more easily. Unfortunately, the weather was not very well in that day, it rain heavily, all of us getting wet. Our student ambassador Mike still responsibility for his mission, he took us walk around the town let us know the town rapidly. I am surprised that we could go to the Bowerham Primary school. Unfortunately, we could not took any picture inside the school, the children in the school was so cute! But we still hold back, because United Kingdom attaches great importance to right of privacy and we have to respect their rules. Children in the school speak too fast to understand what they said, although we can not community successfully, we still had great time in the playground. In my mind, prison is an area which is old and dirty. In Lancaster, the only castle in the town to my surprise is a prison! How can you image a prison with appearance of gorgeous, solemn and respectful. The castle located in the town with a few hundred years, it still use. Inside the prison are court, dungeon and drawing room. We had been locked in the dungeon, it scared me, the dungeon is dark, small and simple, there is only a bed in the dungeon. The door is very heavy, there are lots of scratches on it, it seem like the dungeon made lots of people mad. I can’t image how they spend there life in the dungeon. Bowling is a good activity, it seems popular in the UK. Not only teenager will play bowling but the family will go there too. The design of the bowling in UK is very well, if you are not good at bowling or you just a beginner, you can set a shelf beside the ditch. I don’t like play bowling in Taiwan because I always get the gutter ball. Playing bowling in the UK is more fun! No matter how worse I am, I can always get the high scores, it makes me more confidence. Edinburgh is a beautiful city with lots of castle. The city separate in two side, one is for shopping and other side is for the castles. We are lucky that the day we went to Edinburgh is near to their International Arts Festival. There are lots of street performers on the old street, people playing Scottish flute, posing as statue, portrait painter, etc. No matter what performances was every performers let the old street full of enthusiasm. Lake district is one of my favorite place, it has fresh air and beautiful scenery. When we wanted to take the boat, one of us are not feeling well, so we didn’t catch the boat. Luckily, we still had other boat to take, impressive thing is the captain looks like Mr.bean, all of us are surprise of that. I am not interested in Dove Cottage, so I just look around the building quickly and went out to take lots of picture outside. I am surprised that liverpool is such a shopping heaven, we do lots of shopping there, it is on sale there, lots of things are so cheap! At the beginning, I am not interested in The Beatles Museum. First, in my mind, museum just a place exhibition a large number of artifacts. Second, I am not interested in The Beatles. After went to the museum, I changed my mind. The Beatles museum not just a museum, it including music, arts, technology, etc. lots of funny stuffs in the museum. Most importantly, we could take lots of picture there! This is the most attractions thing. For me, this museum is a successful museum, after the activity, I star to fall in love with the Beatles, I am now understand why the band can be popular for such a long time. Manchester is a real shopping heaven! Lots of department store located in there, it a good place doing shopping. I am not interested in foot ball. As I saw we had gone to the Manchester United Stadium, I was a little sad. After went to the stadium, I am now understand why people so fascinated in foot ball. The momentum of the stadium is amazing, and they take very good care of the stadium, there is clear and tidy. . There is an interesting course, and I like it a lot. We have a course talking about changes in the UK and its global economy. It not just wanted you looked at the power point and listened to the speaker. After the class, the speaker took us walked around Lancaster, as we walked, he would talked us how the building come or how the economic development, and he will told us some history of the town. It is a very special experience for me. I hope some times Taiwan’s education can like that, not just inside the class and can go out for a look. One of the famous performances in Lancaster is a drama in the Williamson Park. Before we saw the drama, we went to the Duke’s theatre to have a theatre tour. In the theatre, they show us how they make the drama and had activity with the performer. The drama is very special, it held ones a year, all the park is there stage, when they change the scene, they will move to other place, audience have to move with them and it always perform at night. This is very difficult to play, if the weather is worse the drama will be cancel. And the staffs have pay attention to safety. They choose fairy tales as their topic, every year show difference story. This year, they perform Peter Pan for us. This is an excellent drama as we moved on to other place, the actor would come and chat with you! It really a special performance I never saw. I learn lots of things in the month, it will be a very good memory in my life. I think it is pity that we can’t study with foreigners. We don’t have other chance to know more foreigners. If we can study with others I think our journey will be more enrich. After the month, I decide to work hard to make my English better, because of it I can have more chance to go abroad. 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A 學海獎助學金海外研習團研習中文報告「讀萬卷書，不如行萬里路。」，2010 年夏天，我終於了解這句話的真諦。英國，從小嚮往的國家，無論建築、風景，抑或是風土民情，在在充滿吸引力。而學海，提供足夠的獎勵和動機，促使我爭取實現願望的機會，並助我開拓人生視野另一片天。行前準備當然不可少，英語單字、文法、會話……，到了出發前一天，卻也忘了差不多，學習真的需要日積月累。抵達小港國際機場，與任善隆老師會面後，該是時候和家人道別，該是時候離開熟悉的台灣、探索另一個陌生的世界。香港機場規模大到需搭地鐵才能到達另一航廈，劉姥姥逛大觀園般，著時令我大開眼界。在飛往倫敦的英國航空機上，身旁坐著一名韓國男士，我們用英文溝通，雖然單字文法無一完整，但我們仍能用簡單的敘述表達並了解對方所要傳達的大意，原來其實語言是靠心意來互通，只要誠心誠意，大多數的人絕對願意傾聽。抵達曼徹斯特機場時，已是隔日上午，天氣陰陰暗暗的，飄著雨。Cumbria 大學學生大使早在機場久候，他是這四個星期內出遊時陪伴、幫助我們最多的大三生，講話帶有英國腔，但願意不厭其煩地重複。他帶領我們依同到 Cumbria 大學和各人的寄宿家庭會面，除了遇亂流的飛機，這是旅途中最令我感到緊張的一刻。同各自家人離開，這才是獨自面對英國人的第一次；友善、大方和親切，是我的寄宿家庭給我的第一印象：爸爸是為體貼的紳士，與我交談時，他盡可能地放慢速度、運用我能理解的單字和片語；媽媽是位幽默的女士，雖然說話速度快些，但與台灣人相比，英國人似乎更有耐心地為他人解釋，願意花更多時間溝通。他們無時不鼓勵我發言，每晚的晚餐，他們總會提出問題，為我製造發表的機會，縱使句句瑕疵、不通順，他們仍專心傾聽、努力理解我想表達的。如此，我有二十六天不同的生活感想在裊裊音樂中，與他們分享；雖然萬事起頭難，但我非常感謝他們的循循善誘，至少最後幾天，我有勇氣由我自己開口。 Cumbria 大學沒有所謂形體的大門、沒有警衛，一到假日，可見不少小孩和家人在校園散步或野餐，即使是上學日，成群的青少年也會相約到大學裡踢足球，寄宿家庭中的一位西班牙男生即是如此。順帶一提，我的寄宿家庭像共和國般，法國、德國、西班牙和南非其中一小國的寄宿生一同生活過，大家共同的語言就只有英文，此時更彰顯英語的重要性。或許是因這無形的大門，學生們更自律自愛，也顯得更獨立。Tania 是這四週中主要的課程講師，全團學生 11 人，如此小班教學下，她花費無數的心力在每一堂課、給予相等的關懷在每一人上，慚愧的事是她所奉獻的必定大於我們所回饋給她的。記得第一天陰雨綿綿，下午由學生大使陪同我們遊走 Lancaster 市中心、作簡介，實際出遊認識一全然陌生的城市，是迥異於台灣在密閉教室中學習的方式，雖然效果明顯差於台灣，但卻更能激起我對這個城市的好奇心和企圖心。每次出遊隔天，Tania 必會花約半小時的時間和大家分享前一天的心得，有時是遊戲，有時是問題，無時不鼓勵每位同學開口、發表，在大家零碎不全的英語短句中，細心修改，慢慢地矯正每個人的發音、單字和文法，而英國人最大的優點在於—從不覺被冒犯，他們雖非以禮樂治國，但成效卻非凡。每週 Tania 藉由不同主題，教授與日常生活相關的英文會話，例如從第一週的基本問句、寄宿家庭生活用語，到較為艱深的文法文句，進步雖然緩慢，但最後一週，大家不經意地流露出日積月累的成果。她用心地規劃教學課程，鼓勵我們一點一滴地學，例如我們每天的回家作業—體驗英國人的作息、聆聽他們的日常對話，無論是白天或夜晚(事實上並不容易 58 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A 看到日落，因為在英國，太陽晚上八、九點才會下山。)，仔細觀察並記錄下來，再於每周一的課堂中與大家分享。因為每人居住的寄宿家庭不同，故各有各的生活方式、上下學路線、甚至是說話的口音，南轅北轍，非常新奇！Tania 還會針對不同的課外活動，設計不同的學習單，幫助大家行前能約略了解目的地的特色，而那學習單是份不用繳回的作業，但是卻沒有人因此不願去完成它們。最令人期待的仍是課外活動的課程，其中參訪 Bowerham Community Primary and Nursery School 的行程，是最令人難忘的其中一個。帶著外帶午餐，Tania 領著我們步行到對街的小學，進行“中英教學交流＂。由國小的學生會先與我們晤面，進行比較教學：我們每人平均與一位小朋友一組，相互提問異國之問題(小學主任事先羅列些與台灣相關之問題)，最後，當主任詢問大家解答時，我才體驗到常在電影裡看到的景象—小朋友舉手如孟子之捨我其誰的雄心壯志般，如此地踴躍，頓時反襯出自己的懦弱，是啊！這並不是電影，現實生活中的自己，竟是這麼地不如眼前的小孩們。晤面會結束後，我們跟隨孩子們到學校中堂，參加他們的朝會活動。小朋友席地而坐，兩位老師在臺前彈吉他，另一位老師帶頭唱，而那是一首為無家可歸之人所作的歌曲，在這所規模不大的小學裡，全校師生動人的歌聲緩緩地流洩，希望能向陣微風，徐徐吹拂至需要的人的心裡。朝會結束後，小朋友一哄而散魚貫至戶外遊戲區。在那之前，因外頭正飄著細雨，微涼的天氣是小朋友們該加件外衣的時刻，他們紛紛進入一間吊掛各自夾克的小房間，自行穿衣後就一同跑向他們的天堂。那只不過是個廣場，地板上塗著和台灣一樣的跳房子格子，還有其他簡單類似的圖案，但那震天的喧嘩聲，一點也無嫌棄這單調廣場的意思，三五成群的孩童們，有的是同班同學，有的是跨班、甚至是跨年級的學長姐們，他們一起歡笑、遊戲，用熱情如火的溫度，暖化陰雨綿綿的寒氣。孩子們本該如此玩耍，親身體驗周遭人事物。近中午時，我們兩人一組各至不同班級觀摩。那是一堂說書課，一堂唱作俱佳的說書課，男老師坐在電腦桌邊的臺前，小朋友們席地圍繞坐在老師腳邊，十幾雙眼凝視表情、手勢多變的老師講故事，就怕一眨眼錯過了什麼，到鱷魚先生上完廁所要去洗手的情節，老師還順勢用電腦與投影機播放一小段教育幼童如廁後洗手的影片，最後當老師提出相關問題，我又對小朋友舉手的氣勢起了敬佩之心，他們無畏無懼、勇往直前的學習，著時令我羨慕。環視教室，左方角落放置一有蓋的垃圾桶，它代表紀律的落實；右前方角落亦設置一座洗手台，它促成習慣的建立，小朋友們從小學習獨立，本應從日常生活中培養，老師以身作則，學生耳濡目染。還記得 Tania 的學習單中，希望我們向小學老師提出問題，我向其中一位助理老師詢問她如何激發孩子們的學習企圖心，她的答案是「玩樂」，就讓孩子們自行去摸索，去找尋屬於自己的成長方法。相異的文化和教育方式，這是最令我感到印象最深刻的地方之一，必定還有我為探索到的另一片天，所以，期許自己未來還能再次體驗如此不一樣的天堂！ 59 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A 60 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A 61 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A 學海獎助學金海外研習團研習英文報告 England, a country which is far away from Taiwan, is a fancy island that I would like to go when I was little. The buildings are magnificent. The scenery is wonderful. The completely blue sky with pure white clouds is so attractive to worldwide people, and I am not an exception. I am a fan of the United Kingdom, too. Not only the outlook, but also the inside of its nation are all reasons that make me desire to be there once in my life. Just reading travel books, I could see how happiness the British people feel. Everything was just like a dream when I was in England. After the bumpy flight, we got off a plane, and the weather was not good. It was a rainy and cold like a cold current in Taiwan, but now it was summer here. An ambassador of the University of Cumbria had waited for us about couple of minutes when we arrived at the Manchester Airport. He took us to the University of Cumbria to meet with our host family individually and our main teacher, Tania. It was so nervous that I almost had forgotten my introduction which I wrote down in Taiwan. But, it seemed that did not matter because as soon as I shook hands with my host family, the atmosphere there immediately became softer and it made me feel much more relaxed. Obviously, there was no need to recite any script while speaking. Talking to foreigners in person, I could not think about grammar or modification but only simple words to complete poor sentences. It was time to test what you had been learning and most important 62 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A was how much you had remembered. Thanks to kindness of people in England, I could express myself as much as I could. They would try their best to understand what I said and it really was a need that foreigners needed. In the meantime, I realized necessity is the mother of invention; language was invented for communicating. The lifestyle was quite differently between in England and Taiwan, like using forks and knife to eat, driving on the left hand side (or the driver seat is at right), and so on. At home, host family set up a cute and cozy bedroom for me, cooked delicious meals, and the best is the greetings. In the morning, host mother definitely would ask me whether I slept well or not, and in every tea time, host parents and I usually would talk about what had happened on that day. We were enjoying good food and sharing the best time with each other. It was really quite common here to express yourself and concern others’ feeling, and it seemed it could generate fast better relationship among people at the same time. As for school, it was an appropriate classroom with eleven students and a tutor in it. She is good at encouraging students to learn by thinking, talking and discussing with others. There was a topic in each week. For example, it was ‘Question sentence’ at first week. We read some short articles, and make questions to ask classmates. We were sometimes divided into few groups to practice and meanwhile, Tania would go around the classroom listening very carefully to correct the wrong grammar which we made or modify our sentences after she wholly understood what we meant. It was the first time I was so close to a teacher who I sincerely appreciated. It was truly great to meet such a hard‐working and kind teacher, and it provided me a happy environment to learn English. Besides, I believed that people might learn more efficiently in a good mood. During this extraordinary journey, I have found so many things worth mentioning, and one specialty of wonderful experience is a convention in Lancaster, which called walk‐about show. It is an annual perform held in August, and it was played by the Duke, a local theater. I truly appreciated that we could have such a great opportunity to attend the big event in this year, and it was Peter Pan, a famous fairytale of Disney. We had visited the Duke one day early to learn something about how and what to form or consist of a whole theatre. Including actors, scripts, marketing……, the staff of the Duke also displayed part of previous shows to activate our interests, and I guessed everyone had been already excited and crazy about the play. On the last Friday, the lovely event finally started at seven o’clock. When I arrived, there had been many people at the first scene and sit surrounding the main building‐ the memorial in the Williamson Park. Some people brought plastic mat, some were with umbrella, and I got a foldable chair which my host family lent it to me. People needed gadgets to avoid getting wet because of the frequently rainy weather in Lancaster. 63 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A Fortunately, the weather was a very nice then, and till the end of the play, it became dark and rained a little bit. In the beginning, everyone was so excited about it that no one would dare to make any voice to bother other people. And suddenly, silence covered all. The show started. At first, the writer, James Matthew Barrie, came out and opened the first page of the story book. Wendy saw Peter Pan quickly flew forth and back in her room, sewed his shadow for him and followed with him to the Neverland. During the play, for fear to losing any tiny movement or face expression, all audience were keeping their eyes seeing the act. At the scene of the Mermaid Lagoon, we were also part of the play. It was in the plot that Peter Pan went to the Mermaid Lagoon to rescue the Indian princess who was captured by the captain, Hook. And when the time Peter Pan, Wendy and the Indian princess were ready to flee away from the bank of the Mermaid Lagoon, they needed power which should come from the crowd. Almost everyone bubbled; I did not get soapsuds, though. But I really would like to join with them and help them to get through the difficulty. About ten minutes later, the sky was full of bubbles. They float over on the water and escaped Hook and his partners. It was most moving plot to me. The atmosphere, the music, and everyone’s effort, and all came together to complete the show, and I could be the part of them; how lucky am I could have such chance to be the part of them! At the end of this performing, Wendy was still not willing to stay there accompanied with Peter Pan. However, the story lasted to Wendy’s descendants, and Peter Pan kept going back to lure them to go the Neverland. Just a month earlier, we arrived at the University of Cumbria, and I learned so lot that I could never get from my text books. For instance, I saw the edge of woods in a train on the way to Edinburgh which I just knew it from a picture of book, experienced the driving on left hand side, whole life at home which definitely should speak in English, got along with unknown family and friends for four weeks or a whole life, and practiced English in real life. I believe that nothing would be better than you feel it in person. And the last week was a time to present a presentation. It should be something connected with the England, and Tania showed us many short examples for how to be a good reporter. We practiced a lot and tried to make it best on our own. Although it was the most nervous thing in the journey, we all wanted to present a perfect one to others. And eventually, we finished it successfully. We felt relaxed, but it was time needing to pack our luggage. When the time to say farewell to Tania, Sue, Maria, Robert, Peter and Stephanie, or anyone who I met in England, even the Latin man, it was really hard to wave my hands and bear weeping tears. In this time, I grew up. I will behave as polite as a gentle in England, speak softly and kindly, and be as considerate as the good people who I noticed then. So, after this invaluable trip, I set up a goal for myself, though it is tough and difficult, I decide to 64 國商 3A 王文平 9725801A come back again. It is never too late to realize any dream. No matter I will come alone or with a group of people, the United Kingdom should be the best destination to experience the exotic culture and life, to see fantastic architecture, to meet the lovely people or to learn English personally one more time.
