COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to give K-12th grade educators the opportunity to examine Individual Fitness
Alternatives to the components of the Health and Fitness Curriculum for implementation in their teaching
situation. It will give teachers the opportunity to examine concepts to help motivate and assist students in the
quest to maintain and improve their health and reduce health-related risk behaviors through Individual
Fitness Alternatives including:
YOGA
PILATES
DANCING
SWIMMING
ARCHERY
JOGGING
GOLF
SKATEBOARDING
GYMNASTICS
BADMINTON
FITNESS
WRESTLING
TENNIS
MANY OTHERS
This course will also present reading materials and web sites with lesson plan ideas that are consistent with
this theme and its use with K-12th grade students and will also provide video ideas for teachers preparing for
major themes of Individual Fitness in the Health and Fitness Curriculum.
Many of these films are available at local libraries, from NetFlix, (but is not necessary for completion of this
course), in video stores and/or for free trial and purchase from documentary film sources like The Video
Project. You will choose 4 videos to examine for implementation in your classroom. If you choose NetFlix, a
3-month subscription is about $30. (NetFlix also has an online video capability for those with a compatible
operating system.) You will need to have access to both a DVD player and a VHS video player to enjoy the
full range of media choices.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
1. Comprehend concepts related to Individual Fitness promotion.
2. Have the ability to access and evaluate Individual Fitness informational media.
3. Analyze the benefits of Individual Fitness as a Health and Fitness Alternative for a healthy life.
4. Examine self-management and decision making skills to enhance health.
5. Examine interpersonal communication skills to enhance fitness and health.
6. Examine decision-making and rubric setting skills to enhance fitness and health.
7. Learn a variety of Individual Fitness curriculum and strategies for classroom use.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Participants will complete assignments and post responses online to specific questions outlined for each
assignment. Completion of all specified assignments is required for issuance of hours or credit. The Heritage
Institute does not award partial credit.
HOURS EARNED:
Completing the basic assignments (Section A. Information Acquisition) for this course automatically earns
participants their choice of 30 Washington State Clock Hours or 30 Oregon PDUs. The Heritage Institute is
an approved provider of Washington State Clock Hours and Oregon PDUs.

UNIVERSITY QUARTER CREDIT INFORMATION
REQUIREMENTS FOR UNIVERSITY QUARTER CREDIT
Continuing Education Quarter credits are awarded by Antioch University Seattle (AUS). AUS requires 75% or
better for credit at the 400 level (Upper Division) and 85% or better to issue credit at the 500 level (PostBaccalaureate). These criteria refer both to the amount and quality of work submitted.
Teachers who register for Antioch University Seattle 400 or 500 Level Credit will be required to:
1. Completion of Information Acquisition assignments

3. Completion of Integration Paper assignment

CREDIT/NO CREDIT
Antioch University Seattle (AUS) Continuing Education (CE) Quarter credit is offered on a Credit/No Credit
basis; neither letter grades nor numeric equivalents are on a transcript. 400 level credit is equal to a “C” or
better, 500 level credit is equal to a “B” or better. This information is stated on the back of the transcript.
AUS CE quarter credits may not be accepted into degree programs. Prior to registering determine with your
district personnel, department head or state education office the acceptability of these credits for your
purpose.

You will need high-speed (DSL) Internet access in order to easily view online resources. Some of the
reading materials may be provided as PDF documents, a format readable by computers with Adobe Acrobat
Reader. You may download a free copy of Acrobat Reader from our website, www.hol.edu, if needed.
You will need a VHS and a DVD player and access to the various films listed. A three-month NetFlix
subscription is about $30, however, your districtsʼ ESD, local video stores and libraries may have these films.

Assignment #3:
For this assignment you will be looking at a series of Fitness Curriculum Activities. The goal is to expose you
to a variety of activities and resources so that you may develop a knowledge base for your curriculum. In
order to become more familiar with the general scope of Fitness Curriculum activities that exist for your grade
level, select one of the books listed in the bibliography to read, or other title of your own choice, with the
instructorʼs prior approval. These books contain a variety of Individual Fitness activities that will help teachers
facilitate fitness lessons for their students. Most of these books can be found at local libraries or for
purchase at Amazon.com or another book outlet. Some of these books can be found on Google Books at
http://books.google.com
In 3-5 pages explain your answers to the following items based on the material from your selected text and

a) Focusing on the grade level you teach, select 3 major fitness activities and explain how these would

Assignment #4:
Refer to the video page at the end of the syllabus. I have made a list of films, which I personally think are
good and are available from Youtube, NetFlix, your ESD video resource center, or local library system. Since
there are many videos about the different topics related to Individual Fitness, you may select others that are
not listed in this bibliography with prior approval of the instructor. Keep in mind that you will want to have use
of a DVD player and have VHS viewing capability as well.
• In this assignment you will review film resources on specific Individual Fitness Alternatives of your
choosing and pick the 4 films you would like to view which best fit your teaching interests and needs.
• In 1-2 pages indicate your 4 selections and briefly state why these film sources are most suitable for
your teaching situation. Post your response in the online response box.
Assignment #5:
Rubrics
In this assignment you will be examining some specific teacher lesson plans to get an understanding of
different ways in which fitness activities are incorporated into a curriculum.
a) Review my Google Documents by clicking on the Google Docs link above and then enter the email and
password listed above. Click on the folder titled “Fitness Lesson Plans” and read articles #9-16. (Click on
each numbered file to access each document). In 2-3 pages discuss the following and post your
responses online:
• Select one of the lesson plans used and describe the methods presented and 3 benefits of using this
strategy in your current classroom curriculum.
• View your first video selection as it pertains to usage in curriculum development, making notes of the
points made in the films that are relevant to what you want to convey to students.
• Indicate what film you saw, and make a list of the key facts that relate to this topic as portrayed in this
film.
• Discuss how you could specifically use this particular film in your teaching.
b) Study 3 specific teacher examples of Individual Fitness activities that could be valuable to your Fitness
curriculum:

For this assignment you will be studying an Individual Fitness event.
• Attend an Individual Fitness event such as a session in Yoga, Pilates, Zoomba, competitive race,
etc. If you are unable to view a live event then an alternative would be to watch one on TV or video.
• While viewing this event, make observations and take 1-2 pages of notes on the following
categories: fitness concepts being used in the event, rules, penalties, scoring, leadership, role of
athlete, role of coach/instructor.
• In 1-2 pages summarize your observations and impression of the dynamic makeup of this activity.

LEARNING APPLICATION
(Required for 400 and 500 Level)
In this section you will apply your learning to your professional situation. This course assumes that most
participants are classroom teachers who have access to students. If you are not teaching in a classroom,
please contact the instructor for course modifications. If you are a classroom teacher and start or need to
complete this course during the summer, please try to apply your ideas when possible with youth from your
neighborhood, at a local public library or parks department facility, (they will often be glad to sponsor
community-based learning), or with students in another teacherʼs summer classroom in session.
Assignment #7:
Select 3-4 of the major themes in Individual Fitness.
Develop a 3-4 page detailed unit plan using the information from the Google Docs articles and videos and
post in the online response box. Your response must include the following items:
• Identify the specific Fitness Curriculum topics you will be using.
• Explain the scaffolding benchmarks that you will use to evaluate the progress of your studentsʼ
knowledge of these topics.
• Provide a specific grading rubric for your unit.
• Execute the lesson plan in your teaching setting.
• Write a 1-page paper that reflects your usage of this unit and the overall student performance.
• Submit 1 sample of student performance that you have graded using your rubric.

and negative outcomes of the lesson plan as it related to your goals with this unit.

Superintendent or Principal, that would argue the benefit of these health programs to your district

Eric Low, M.A., has been a teacher in the state of Washington since 1992. He has a Masterʼs degree
from Eastern Washington University and has been an active researcher in Washington State for
over 20 years. Eric currently teaches and coaches at Winlock High School and has developed and
worked with district and state level curriculum since 1997. Eric has been an instructor for the Heritage
