This course focuses on current geographic issues that affect Canadians. Students will
draw on their personal and everyday experiences as they explore issues relating to food
and water supplies, competing land uses, interactions with the natural environment,
and other topics relevant to sustainable living in Canada. They will also develop an
awareness that issues that affect their lives in Canada are interconnected with issues in
other parts of the world. Throughout the course, students will use the concepts of
geographic thinking, the geographic inquiry process, and spatial technologies to guide
and support their investigations.
The Ontario Catholic graduate will be able to achieve many of the expectations in their
study of geography. Through their examination, evaluation and application of knowledge
of interdependent systems (especially physical, ecological and socio-economic), students
will discover what is necessary for the development of a just and compassionate society.
This course will help in the development of a responisble Catholic citizen who respects
and affirms the diversity and interdependence of the world’s different peoples, respects
the environments, and promotes the wise use of resources. Furthermore, it is expected
that Catholic students of geography will promote dignity of humankind and realize the
nature of stweardship bestowed upon them as children of God.
The Ontario Catholic Graduate is expected to be:
1. A discerning believer formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates
the signs and sacred mystery of God's presence through word, sacrament, prayer,
forgiveness, reflection and moral living.
2. An effective communicator who speaks, writes and listens honestly and

 Your grade will include an equal assessment of the four strands above as required by
the Ontario Curriculum.
 Your term work, research paper and mapping portfolio will represent 70% of your
total mark.
 The remaining 30% will come from the final examination and a culminating task.
 Assignments, tests, presentations and any other summative evaluation will be
recorded under the four strands. Most evaluations will cover all four strands.
 Ability to display the required learning skills (Responsibility, Organization,
Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative and Self Regulation) will be assessed
through formative evaluations and reported. Attention to these skills is essential for
success in any course.
Expectations:
 Consistent attendance is crucial to experience success in this course. Office notes
must be obtained and shown to the instructor at the beginning on the period upon
return.
 Punctuality is essential. If lates occur, the process outlined in your agenda books
will be followed.
 Attendance at all tests and presentations in mandatory. A doctor’s note is
expected if a test or summative presentation is missed. If notice is given
regarding a school activity or legitimate absence due to an appointment, every
opportunity will be given to reschedule. If no notice is given this will not occur.
 Hand in all work on time. Lates will be dealt with according to school policy.
 Come to class in full uniform, with proper materials and prepared to work.
 Students should practice due diligence in reading both the text and outside
resources as dictated by the teacher and personal research needs. Homework
length and frequency will vary. The amount of class time you put into your work
and the research needs of your assignments will influence how much homework is
required.
 Be respectful to yourself and others.
