Student Associations Build Vehicles
The MSU student chapters of Society of
Automotive Engineers (SAE) and the American
Society of Mechanical Engineer’s (ASME) are
gearing up to compete in vehicle design contests in
2006. The ASME team will compete in a national
Human Powered Vehicle (HPV) competition in
April in San Luis Obispo, Calif., and the SAE
team will compete as Car #20 at the SAE West
race in Fontana, Calif., in June 2006.
The ASME competition’s design component,
sprint and 40-mile endurance races challenge
students to design and build a sleek, lightweight
vehicle. Professor Chris Jenkins, HPV project
advisor, says, “National competitions like HPV
allow MSU students to compete directly with
students from other top engineering programs

in the country. The benefits include better
engineering graduates who have increased
awareness of transportation alternatives.”
The SAE club is building on last year’s
organizing and fundraising activities. The dozen or
so active members have bought an engine, built a
prototype frame and drafted preliminary designs.

Department is providing students three capstone
design/build projects related to SAE club activities.

parts in their advanced composites course and the
projects themselves are possible, thanks in part, to
advisor Robb Larson, assistant professor, and Vic
Cundy, professor.

solar energy are not practical.
Scientists have long known that biochemical
reactions convert energy, but it is at the cutting
edge to find practical ways to harness that
energy. One obstacle to using that energy is that
microbial fuel cells produce an infinite supply
of sustained energy but very little power. To
illustrate this dilemma, Lewandowski uses the
known analogy of moving rocks. A person can
use sustained energy to move a large pile of rocks
one by one, but lacks the power to move the pile
all at once. To activate the sensors, more power is
needed than what can be created continuously.
To overcome these obstacles, Lewandowski
and Beyenal have collaborated with computer
scientists and electrical engineers. Electrical
engineers found ways to convert sustained energy
to short bursts of power needed to transmit the
data, and U.S. Geological Survey experts helped
the team use satellite technology to transmit
data when it was found that antennas were too
cumbersome.

Sobek chosen as MSU’s first Boeing Professor
Durward K. Sobek II, associate professor
and graduate program coordinator for the
Department of Mechanical and Industrial
Engineering at Montana State University, has
been appointed as the College of Engineering’s
first Boeing Professor.
Sobek will design an undergraduate program
to teach engineering students how to work
effectively on a multidisciplinary team and help
prepare them for work in a global economy.
Boeing established the professorship in 1991
with a goal of achieving a $1 million endowment,
which the fund reached in 2005. Sobek will serve
as Boeing Professor at MSU for a minimum oneyear term, as the program allows rotation within
the college.
“The Boeing Company is pleased with
our longtime association with the College of
Engineering,” said Lindsay Anderson, ‘83 ChE,
of Boeing. “The work of Dr. Sobek will make
the graduates of MSU even more valuable at
Boeing and other companies that require well-
trained design and manufacturing engineers who
can work in a cross-functional environment.”
Sobek, who has conducted research on product
development practices at two world-class
manufacturing firms, earned his doctorate in
industrial and operations engineering from the
University of Michigan in 1997.
“Sobek’s exposure to both industrial and
student design processes, his expertise in design
theory, methodology and instruction, and his
ability to collaborate across traditional program
boundaries make him the right person to lead
this initiative,” said Marley.
Marley said planning will continue through
spring 2006, with implementation by fall
semester 2006. “The college’s accreditation
depends in part on the project’s success. Having
a multidisciplinary engineering curriculum will
help the college demonstrate that its graduates
are capable of working in a multidisciplinary
environment,” he said.

Sherwin wins AFCEA Scholarship
David Sherwin of Bozeman, ’05 EE, received
the General Emmett Paige Scholarship
from the Armed Forces Communications
and Electronics Association. The $2,000
competitive scholarship is awarded to
outstanding students majoring in science or
engineering. Sherwin’s prior military service,
current membership in the Montana Army
National Guard and his full-time status as
an engineering student qualified him for the
scholarship.

Faculty Highlights
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering welcomes a new
department head and three assistant professors. Chris Jenkins,
department head, established the Compliant Structures Laboratory
at the South Dakota School of Mines, a nationally recognized
leader in ultra-lightweight and flexible structure technology. Jenkins
is a registered engineer in three states and an associate fellow of the
American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
Sarah Codd, Stephen Sofie and Ahsan Mian join the faculty.
Codd, co-director of the Magnetic Resonance Microscopy
Laboratory, joined the Department of Chemical and Biological
Engineering as an assistant research professor in 2002. She
continues her affiliation with the Center for Biofilm Engineering.
Codd earned a doctorate in physics from the University of Kent at
Canterbury, UK, in 1996.
Mian was a visiting faculty member at Wayne State University
and spent two years as a designer for an international corporation’s
automotive electronics division in Dearborn, Mich. Mian is a
member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the
Society for Experimental Mechanics. He earned his doctorate in
mechanical engineering from Auburn University in 2000.
Sofie is an expert in innovative ceramic processing, with
applications ranging from medical ultrasound imaging to solid
oxide fuel cells. Sofie studied solid oxide fuel cell systems at the
NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland prior to joining MSU
and earned his doctorate in materials science and engineering from
the University of Washington in 2002.

contribute. Students have become familiar with
the tribulations of field research during the
project. In one instance, the device was stolen
from Roskie Creek when it was left overnight. In
another instance, students gathering satellite data
in Hyalite at midnight were questioned by police
because of their “suspicious” behavior.
Environmental engineers are likely to find
microbial fuel cells particularly useful. Alerting
Homeland Security officials of a chemical attack
on drinking water sources or measuring heavy
metals in streams are among applications that
researchers envision. In addition, the fuel cells
themselves are environmentally friendly because
they use naturally occurring bacteria and, in
certain applications, eliminate the hazards
of toxic chemicals that traditional batteries
contain. Lewandowski predicts that advances in
nanotechnology will make it possible to develop
smaller devices that use less energy, further
enhancing the practicality of using microbial
fuel cells.
Micron Scholars’ Dinner
at Bozeman
Chemical and Biological Engineering
Two assistant professors, Brent Peyton and Ross Carlson, join
the Chemical and Biological Engineering faculty. Peyton spent
eight years as a faculty member at Washington State University
where he served as associate director of the Center for Multiphase
Environmental Research and won WSU’s department of chemical
engineering’s Researcher of the Year Award five times. He also spent
five years with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. Peyton
holds three U.S. patents, one for a biomonitoring device and the
other two for metals removal and analysis methods. Peyton earned
a doctorate in chemical engineering from MSU in 1992.
Ross Carlson continues at the CBE, where he investigates surface
coatings strategies to retard or prevent biofilm formation on
medical devices such as catheters. Carlson joined the CBE in 2004
as an assistant research professor following a postdoctoral fellowship
at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, where he earned his
doctorate in chemical engineering in 2003.
Civil Engineering
Dean Peterson and Whitney Lutey, assistant professors in
construction engineering technology, join the Civil Engineering
Department. Peterson spent 26 years with the Corps of Engineers
St. Paul District, where he served as the construction area engineer
for the northern half of the upper Mississippi River. He oversaw
the $300 million rehabilitation of 13 upstream locks and dams,
environmental restoration projects and EPA Superfund projects.
Peterson earned his master’s degree in geotechnical engineering
from Colorado State University in 1980.
Lutey is a partner in a local construction company and spent
more than six years with Hensel Phelps Construction Company.
She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in construction
engineering from MSU in 1996 and 1997.

Carson Drew, senior in ECE, his guest Kristen Smith, and
Michael Oudshoorn, department head of Computer Science;
were among those who enjoyed the Micron Scholars’ Dinner,
held October 15 in Bozeman. Micron currently awards
12 annual scholarships to juniors and seniors majoring in
computer science or Electrical and Computer Engineering.
MSU’s COE is a “key school” for Micron Technology of Boise,
Idaho.
Phil Stewart Named Director

Phil Stewart, chemical and biological
engineering, has been named director of the
Center for Biofilm Engineering after a year
as interim director. Stewart joined the MSU
chemical engineering faculty in 1991, and has
since served as a researcher, deputy director and
executive committee member of the center. He
invites researchers from around the world to visit
the center to learn biofilm methods and analytical
skills, share expertise and conduct collaborative
research.

Roberts Hall Renovated
COE’s tradition of excellence has long been
symbolized by Roberts Hall, the college’s home
since 1923. Roberts’ stately entrance is where
parents and freshmen
engineering students
first enter COE and
eventually pose for
graduation photos.
Thanks to COE and
MSU’s Office of
Facilities Services (OFS),
the entrance has been
renovated to highlight
its historical character.

maintenance budget
covered the costs of new sidewalks, refurbished
lamps outdoors, and traditional painting,
furnishings and exhibit cases indoors. The lobby’s
intimate seating area provides a short-term
landing place for visitors and students.
The renovation included making the west
corridor of Roberts’ first floor the new home
of the Montana Professional Engineers Hall of
Fame. Plaques honor engineers whose careers were
significant to the history and development of the
state of Montana. “Hall of Famers” so honored
include John H. Morrison, Ben F. Hurlbut,
Leland J. Walker, Paul Schmechel and Harold S.
Hanson.

ceilings in the foyer and
second floor hallway.
The muted yellow and
matte ivory paint scheme
reflects traditional
colors and links the
lobby’s furnishings to
architectural elements,
such as Greek column capitals formed in plaster.
OFS chose the colors after workers found
only bright yellow paint in scraping through
approximately a dozen paint layers on various
surfaces throughout the renovated area. The final
color is a toned-down version of the original.
Roberts Hall was built in 1923 at a cost of more
than $377,000 and named in honor of William
Milnor Roberts (1810-1881), one of the country’s
most notable civil engineers.

COE Complex
Goes Wireless
Wireless Internet access can
make it easier for students to work
on group projects and for faculty
to unleash their creative teaching
skills. The combined efforts of the
COE and MSU’s Information
Technology Center have expanded
wireless access throughout the
engineering complex to improve
learning and teaching.
The new system, operational
since August 2005, gives students
a reason to bring their laptop
computers to campus. Students
will find it easier to keep up with
homework, study for exams and
work in small groups. Instructors
can more easily design interesting
class activities. More wireless access
also makes classroom configuration
more flexible and lets students use
complex software packages and lab
equipment outside of lecture halls,
where large class sizes can make
hands-on instruction impractical.
