1
An Introduction to the festival
The University Theatre of Franche Comté was founded in October 1986, and during the
following two years it performed its own plays in France and abroad. But rather than simply
responding each time to particular invitations, we decided in 1990 to inaugurate our own
International Student Theatre Festival, and since then we have welcomed here scores of student
groups from France and elsewhere.
The Festival is an exciting event each year for all those who participate and also for a wider public in
and around Besançon.
During the week of the international meeting, there are plays and we organise some events (
conferences- demonstrations, workshops...).

Getting to Besançon
** By plane **
From Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle (Paris):
There is a direct bullet train (TGV) from the airport to Besancon. It leaves every night at 7:30 PM
and arrives in Besancon at 10:30. You can also go into Paris on the line B RER or by taxi and take a
train from the Gare de Lyon. There are a number of daily direct trains to Besançon.
From Orly (Paris):
Take the Orlybus (6.10 €) to its terminal at the Denfert-Rochereau stop in Paris. From there take the
Metro line 6 towards Nation until you reach Bercy. At Bercy change to the the line 14 towards SaintLazare and get off at the next stop, the Gare de Lyon. From there you can catch a direct TGV for
Besancon.

Be careful ! There are two TGV ( high-speed trains) stations to come to Besancon.
There is the station Besançon Viotte which is situated in the downtown of Besançon and the
station Auxon-Dessus ( it takes about 20 minutes to come with a shuttle until Besançon).
The Festival
We request all groups to participate fully in the Festival and to be present at all events.
3
The Parade
This should be bright and colourful. Participants can parade with flags, banners, traditional
costumes and anything else that they would like to propose. A parade is when everybody walks
together in the streets of Besancon to promote the festival towards the inhabitants of the city. We
stop on different town squares and the groups could make then an animation of 10 minutes minimum
(for example, you could play a scene of your show, sing traditional songs and dance traditional
dances ...)
Workshops
It will last about 3 hours. Each group needs therefore to designate a workshop leader.
Participants can register for those workshops which interest them and which they will be expected to
attend. This workshop is important for festival-goers in order to learn about the theatrical practices
of other countries.
Performances and Discussions
Each group should be prepared to talk with the audience following its performance and to
answer questions.
Criteria of Selection :
Application forms completed within the time stipulated /The quality of the proposed
performance / The commitment and motivation of the group/ Workshops participation
Animations:
You will have to make animations in the different university restaurants on the campus or in
the downtown. You will have to realize at least once during the week an animation of 10 minutes
minimum. You must prepare it in advance in order to present it to students. It is important to
promote the festival towards the students of Besancon. You could for example play a scene of your
show, sing traditional songs and dance traditional dances... This animation can be the same as the
one you will realize during the parade. All your ideas are welcome.
