DUNST
A Blessing for the New School Year
Loving God, extend your blessing over our families
this new school year.
May our homes be filled with love, joy and hope.
Let trespasses be forgiven, wounds be healed and
conflict melt into harmony.
May our children grow in knowledge, understanding
and wisdom;
May they be strong in mind, body and spirit;
May they have the courage to follow your ways.
Dear God, may home, parish and school work
together to create a world where our children can
help build a civilization of love.
Amen.
Principal’s Message
As this new school year begins, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to all the new
families in our school community and to welcome back all those returning to St. Dunstan. I
would also like to welcome our new secretary, Mrs. Kalynowsky and welcome back our
Trustee, Peter Ferreira. This year we will begin our Full Day Kindergarten Program. As we
anticipate the successes of the year ahead, I encourage you to remember that each success will
be the result of the mutual support and respect we as parents and educators show one another.
It is very important that the positive relationships of the past continue throughout the
upcoming year. As our students mature we are reminded that their beliefs, ideals and sense of
responsibility, friendship and family are constantly challenged and the common language and
support we share as role models in their lives will impact greatly on their values as they grow
into Catholic leaders of the future. As part of St. Joseph’s Parish we work closely with the
Church community to live the gospel values and provide for the faith development of your
child. Thank you to the St. Dunstan staff for all your work in preparing to receive our students
on the first day of school. I look forward to seeing everyone at our Open House/BBQ on
September 18th. All my best for a wonderful school year. God Bless.
A Message From Peter Ferreira, Trustee
Dear Lord, send your spirit upon us and fill us with wisdom, patience, perseverance and kindness.
Welcome back! As ever, summer is too short; especially with the weather we have been experiencing.
Welcome also to our new students and their families. As we begin another school year we ask God to
bless all of our students, parents, teachers, administrators, senior staff, custodians, support staff, parish
priests and all employees and volunteers of Dufferin-Peel as well as our Board of Trustees. We pray that this will be a
successful year for all.
Welcome all new staff. We know that you will find our schools to be dynamic and enriched places of learning. We
wish our staff God’s blessings as they move forward this year. We appreciate their time and talent and especially their
donation of treasured volunteer hours for extracurricular activities.
We as a school community are blessed to be working with Superintendent David Amaral, someone who takes his
responsibilities in a most professional and thoughtful manner.
We are so happy to see that this September brings Full Day Learning to all of our elementary schools. Schools have
been renovated and are ready to welcome our new students. Studies have shown that Full Day Learning has had a
positive impact on the grade one student population which has been our goal. Along with the positive outcomes of our
EQAO results, we have much of which to be proud in Dufferin-Peel.
Parents please support and join your Catholic School Council. It is a great opportunity for input and better
understanding of what is happening in education both locally and provincially.
We wish you all the best and may the good Lord always hold you in the palm of His hand.
God Bless,
Peter Ferreira,
Trustee, Wards 6 & 11, Mississauga
Staffing
The beginning of each school year is always marked
by unexpected changes which require all of us to be
understanding, accommodating and flexible. The
September school organization is based on projected
enrolment prepared by the Board’s Planning
Department. Such enrolment projections determine
the number of teachers assigned to the school and
consequently the grade and class configurations. In
the event that student enrolment falls below or above
projections, an adjustment to the number of teachers
assigned to the school follows, which in essence may
affect the placement of your child. Therefore, as we
start the year, staffing is still tentative and until
actual numbers are realized and assessed,
reorganization of classes is a strong possibility.

Traffic Safety/Kiss N’ Ride
The Kiss n’ Ride program which has
been utilized yearly here at St. Dunstan
will continue again this year. It has been
established in order to provide the convenience
and safety for our students and parents driving to
our school. Please take a moment to review the
following procedures to ensure safety for all
students and parents using the Kiss N’ Ride.
Please follow these procedures when driving into
the school parking lot:
1. The entry, exit and bus zone, on school
property, must never be blocked by cars.
2. Please drop your children off at the front of the
school. DO NOT leave your vehicle yourself, and
for safety reasons, have the children exit the car
from the school side of the vehicle only.
3.DO NOT drop your child(ren) off in the bus
loading zone or in the bus lane or near the south
exit to the school yard.
4.Dropping off students should NOT occur in the
outer Drive-Thru Lane. Cars are regularly using
this lane
5. You may park in any available space EXCEPT
for the parking spaces directly in front of the
Childcare Drop Off area. These spaces are
reserved for parents with children using the
Childcare. As well, we ask you to reserve the
Handicapped parking space for those who are
entitled to use it. We do have parents and
grandparents who require this space.
6. If you park please do not allow your child to
walk across the parking lot unattended.
7. All grade 1-8 students being driven to school
may be dropped of at the front of the school and
then they can either walk along the sidewalk by
the driveway to the large gate area and then into
the school yard or walk along the sidewalk to the
pathway by the kindergarten yard following the
pathway by the primary classrooms and then into
the school yard.
Please feel free to direct any questions or
concerns to Mr. O’Neill.
Parent Volunteers
St. Dunstan has a very active school council and
parent volunteers contribute greatly to making
our school a vibrant community. A reminder to
ALL parents who would like to volunteer at the
school this year, including those parents who
would like to on field trips or teams to athletic
events, a current criminal reference check
is now required. If you have previously
volunteered you will need to complete an Annual
Criminal Declaration. Forms can be picked up at
the main office.
NUT/PEANUT ALLERGY ALERT!!
We are asking for your co-operation in keeping our school
safe for all our students. Several students in our school
suffer from a severe food allergy to all nuts, peanuts and
all nut products. Should these children come into contact
with the food or residue left when someone else has been
in contact with the food, they could go into anaphylactic
shock – a potentially life-threatening situation. We are
asking that you do not send your child with any food for
lunch or snack that contains nuts or nut products. If your
child were to bring this food to eat, the residue from his/
her hands would be transmitted to every item he/she
touched after eating. Should the allergic child then touch
the same item, a life threatening situation could result. We
want all our children to be safe and healthy, and these
measures will help ensure this. If your child has been
diagnosed with this allergy and you have not notified the
school, please do so immediately. If you have any
questions or concerns regarding this guideline, please do
not hesitate to contact the office. Thank you for your
support and understanding. As well, for the protection of
children with life threatening allergies to bee strings, all of
our students must eat their food/snacks drinks inside the
school. We do not allow ANY FOOD on the playground.

STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE FORMS
Important notice to parents/ guardians regarding
insurance for students who participate in out-of-school
excursions and extra-curricular sports activities.
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board requires
that parents, guardians and adult students provide
written acknowledgment that they have received the
‘insuremykids’ student accident insurance brochure. This
requirement applies to all students participating in
out-of-school excursions and/or extra-curricular sports
activities. Although the Board takes every precaution to
provide a safe learning environment for students,
accidents can and do happen. Some injuries result in
medical, dental or other expenses that are not covered by
the provincial health care or employer group plans. As a
parent, guardian or an adult student you become
responsible for these expenses. Some families have
private accident insurance which is able to respond to
costs arising from injuries however many families do not.
Under the Education Act, an Ontario school board may
“provide, by contract with an insurer under the
Insurance Act, accident and life insurance for pupils, the
cost of which is to be paid on a voluntary basis by the
parents or guardians. R.S.O. 1990, c. E.2, s. 176, par. 4.”
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board does not
and cannot insure students. Coverage may be purchased
through the Reliable Life Insurance Company
(www.insuremykids.com) or through their family’s
individual work or private plan. For more information,
please contact:

Thank you to our School Council for covering the
cost of the Student Agendas which were
distributed to all students from Grades 1 - 8. The
agendas are an important resource which can be
used by students to keep track of their homework
and upcoming assignments. It is also an easy way
for teachers and parents to communicate.
School Council Nomination forms will be available
in the office up until Friday, September 26th. We
will hold elections for School Council members at
our first meeting on Wednesday, October 1st at
6:30.
Our Open House/BBQ will be held on Thursday,
September 18th. Order forms will be sent home
early next week and thank you to the School
Council for subsidizing the cost of the BBQ.
