FEBRUARY 2012
Virtue of the Month: Respect
We all deserve to be treated respectfully by others. However, in order to be
respected we also have to respect ourselves. Everyone has a right to go to
school/work free of gossip, name-calling, and put-downs. We should expect to
be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in Jesus.
Prayer for Respect
All mighty God, giver of all that is good.
We thank you for the precious gift of human life.
Guide us to respect all life.
Like St. Francis, help us to see the beauty and goodness in all living things
Help us to imitate your respect for life
For the life of children, making us glad with their enthusiasm
For the life of young people, hoping for a better world
For the life of the sick and disabled, teaching us humility
For the life of the elderly, witnessing patience and wisdom.
We thank you Lord.
Like Blessed Mary, may we always say yes to your gift of life.
May we have respect for all.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Dressing for Winter Weather
Winter is here! Please encourage your child to dress appropriately for the cold weather. Outdoor play is
a healthy and invigorating activity when students are wearing suitable clothing and warm mittens.
Please write your child’s name on boots, mitts, hats, jackets and snow pants. Children must change
into their indoor shoes for warmth, comfort and cleanliness in their classrooms. Please keep an extra
pair of mittens, socks and even track pants in your child’s school bag in case they need a dry change of
clothes.
Ride/Parking/Safety
All parents/guardians are asked to respect the NO PARKING zones at the front of the school. This area is
reserved for busses and emergency vehicles. The KISS and RIDE lane is not a parking lane; it is strictly
for drop-off and pick-up with the parent remaining in the vehicle. Drop offs are to take place at the side of
the school. No students are to be dropped off at the front of the school. If you do wish to walk your child
to the school yard, please park your car in the parking lot or on the street.

Lates
Our day begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. Students who arrive late for
class often miss vital instructional time, interrupt classroom routines
and disrupt the learning of others. Attendance and punctuality are
essential components of the elementary school program. The
Education Act dictates that “ … a pupil shall attend classes punctually
and regularly.” The Ministry of Education indicates that poor
attendance and frequent lates are often one indication that a pupil is a
„Student at Risk‟ for successful completion of a Secondary School.
diploma.
Primary and Junior Word Study Tips
JANUARY
Did You Know?
RHYTHM is the longest English word without a vowel!
School/Community Connection:
Primary:
Have your child name 10 articles of winter clothing. Activity 1: Write them on sticky notes. Have fun putting the
words in alphabetical order. Activity 2: Look for little words inside of the bigger words. E.g. snowsuit – snow, suit,
it, no, now.
Junior:
Business establishments with creative names for their shops are a rich source of word play in the environment.
For example: Hair for a Good Time; Shear Elegance; The Cutting Edge.
Have your child come up with new shop names. Together, with your child, play with words to create a new name
for businesses.
FEBRUARY
Did You Know?
Of all the languages in the world, English has the largest vocabulary: about 800,000 words!
School/Community Connection:
Primary:
Valentine’s Day- Use index cards to write 8 to 10 words about love and friendship. Make two cards for each word.
Scramble them and lay them on a flat surface face down. Take turns flipping one card over and trying to find the
match.
Family Day- Grow a family: Cut out a tree trunk from any scrap paper. Cut out some leaf shapes. Label each with
a family word- brother, sister, mom, etc. Repeat the activity with different themed words.
Junior:
Tired Word Triangles
Some words in the English language are over used e.g., nice, said, walked, sad. With your child draw a triangle
and place the over used word in the middle. Have your child think of 3 synonyms (words that mean the same),
around the triangle. Use a thesaurus to add to your triangle.
MARCH
Did You Know?
A palindrome is a word, phrase, number or other sequence of units that can be read the same way in either
direction. According to the Guinness Book of World Records the Finnish word: saippuakivikauppias, a soap seller,
is the longest known palindrome in any language!
School/Community Connection:
Primary:
Play the magic square activity with your child. Fold a piece of 8.5 by 11 blank paper accordion style to make a
fan. Brainstorm family rhyming words (e.g., at, bat, cat; book, look, cook) and write one word on each section of
the fan. Work together, to create a poem using the rhyming words.
Junior:
Together with your child, investigate the origin of your town, city or street name. Research, using the internet, or
your local library.
