Curriculum Blessed are you, O Lord our God, You have made the sun to light the day And the moon and stars to light the night. Help us walk in your light. During this season of Lent, renew us through the gifts of your Holy Spirit. Help us grow in faith, hope and love. During this special time, we remember that Jesus died and rose from the dead, so that we might be free to love. Help us grow to be the people You call us to be: letting go of old habits of selfishness, forgiving those who have hurt us, giving quality time to our families, spending time in quiet prayer. Amen. As we continue on our Lenten journey, let us pray for the strength and courage to be the people God created us to be. Together, let us make good plans for Lent. We can choose actions to atone for our sins, to make our lives more joyful by sharing with others. Excerpt from Pope Francis’ Lenten Message By making himself poor, Jesus did not seek poverty for its own sake but, as Saint Paul says “…that by his poverty you might become rich.” Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what can we give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. Striving for Excellence March Virtue - Kindness / Bullying Can Be Stopped This month we will celebrate the Virtue of Kindness. God has given us the gifts of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out along the way. Kindness can only be seen through actions. Students are encouraged to demonstrate care, integrity and responsibility when they are making decisions to help others. We would appreciate your support in discussing this virtue with your child. Safe School Initiative Reminders: Kiss and Ride The lane along the sidewalk is reserved for DROP-OFF and PICK-UP ONLY. Please proceed very slowly to the yellow posts. We respectfully ask that you do not leave your vehicle while in this lane to avoid causing a traffic backup. Your assistance and positive response to directions from staff on duty in this area are greatly appreciated. Punctuality Please arrive at school on time. Supervision begins at 8:15 a.m. Regular attendance and being on time for learning is one of the cornerstones for student success in school. We encourage you to examine the Lates and Absences on your child’s Term 1 Report Card and use this information for your child’s personal goal setting for Term 2. Thank you! Winter Dress Reminder It is imperative that all students come to school ready to participate in all activities, including outdoor recess. Please ensure that your child (ren) come to school with hats, scarves, gloves, winter outerwear and boots. As well, all students should have indoor footwear at school. This is essential in case of an emergency evacuation, as students will not have time to put on their boots if they need to evacuate the school in a hurry. Junior Boys and Girls Basketball Go Cougars Go! A great big cougar cheer for both the boys and girls junior basketball teams. They demonstrated hard work, sportsmanship and enthusiasm while having a great time. Both teams were very competitive and qualified for the family tournament at Iona High School. The teams pushed hard throughout the first round and the girls even qualified for the semi-finals! All of the coaches are proud of the teams and wish to thank them for their dedication. Thank you also to the parents for their ongoing encouragement and support. Many thanks to our coaches for their time and dedication: Mr. Murphy, Mrs. Zanatta, Ms. De Julio, Mrs. Farris, and Mme Gallant ! Eco Angels: Shepherds of a Greener Earth Our Eco Team continues to encourage the conservation of energy at school by ensuring that classroom lights as well as electronics are turned off when they are not being used. The bitter cold has required more heating so the Eco Team also makes sure that doors leading to the outside were only opened as long as necessary. Eco-Schools Our school has begun a milk bag collection program in order to create mats for those in West Africa who have the Ebola virus. This is a way to reuse the plastic milk bags and help provide a more comfortable resting mat so that victims can recover without lying on the bare ground. Earth Hour! On Saturday, March 28th, the whole world will be turning off lights and electronics in order to help bring about awareness regarding energy conservation. From 8:30 - 9:30 pm, participants will reduce the amount of energy required to homes and business. Although the impact may be small, the awareness it brings about helps to inspire others to reduce the amount of energy consumed on a daily basis. Our school will be participating on Friday, March 27th. National Sweater Day National Sweater Day was observed board wide on February 5, 2015. Thanks to everyone for participating and sharing their sweater stories while also demonstrating commitment to reducing our carbon footprint on the planet. Striving for Excellence EQAO The EQAO (Education Quality and Accountability Office) testing of our Grade 3 and Grade 6 students will take place from Monday May 25 to Friday June 5, 2015.
