Students will design and conduct investigations into everyday problems and issues related to living things, chemical reactions, climate change, light and geometric optics. COURSE OF STUDY Biology: Tissues, Organs, and Systems Chemistry: Chemical Reactions and their Practical Applications Physics: Light and Applications of Optics Earth and Space Sciences: Earth’s Dynamic Climate TEXTBOOK Nelson Science Connections 10 The textbook is on LOAN to you for the semester. Loss or damage to the text will result in a fine. (Replacement Cost: $90.00) EVALUATION EVALUATION POLICY Knowledge and Understanding - understanding of concepts - knowledge of facts - understanding of relationships between concepts 25% Thinking and Inquiry - application of skills and strategies of scientific inquiry, 2 or more step calculations 35% Communications - communication of information and ideas, oral presentations, homework, study notes 15% Tests There will be four unit tests. One will be given at the end of each unit. Students will provide sufficient notice to the teacher for any legitimate reason that will result in a missed test. If a test is missed due to a legitimate reason, verification by parent/guardian contact must be given to the teacher immediately. The student will be expected to write the test upon return. In the event of an extended legitimate illness, students will write the test upon catching up on missed work according to the teacher. Applications - relating science to technology, society and the environment (STSE), ISU’s 25% Total 100% Term Work Final Exam Culminating Task 70% 15% 15% Assignments, Labs and Projects The ability to meet deadlines especially for major assignments, labs and projects is a life skill that is imperative for success in the real world. Therefore it is expected that work will be handed in on time. All assignments must be submitted within the hand-in window!! Workbook It is strongly recommended that students purchase a teacher crated workbook containing notes and worksheets. Final Evaluation Term Work Attendance: Attendance to all classes is mandatory. Homework: From day to day there may be work assigned as homework or you may have class work you do not finish. To be successful in this class you must complete all class work and homework daily, and to get it done you need to 1) make time for it, 2) have a work space and 3) be free of distractions to be able to concentrate. I will check homework on some days and on other days; I may give an unannounced quiz! Therefore, it is a good idea to have a friend in the class to be your homework buddy. This way if you are away, you will be able to catch up on work missed and not be at a disadvantage on the quiz. Notebook: You are expected to have a 3-ring binder for this class, with a title page for each unit and a table of contents of your notes and activities in the unit. This will allow for easy studying and a successful term! Missed Tests & Major Assignments: If you know you are going to miss a test or are unable to hand in a major assignment on the due date for a legitimate reason, please see me WELL in advance. In the event you miss a test due to illness, you must present a doctor’s note in order to make up the test. If you do not present a note, you will receive a mark of ZERO for the test. For major assignments, there will be a 3 day late window to hand in the assignment, with deductions per day up to a maximum of 10%. After 3 days, a mark of 0 will be given. If you are away on the last day of the window, a classmate should hand in the assignment for you. In both situations, the teacher will consider extenuating circumstances. Classroom Expectations: The only major expectation of everyone in this class is that you are respectful of everyone and everything in the classroom and that you give this course your best effort. Further to this, you are expected to adhere to all policies in the Student Agenda including; lates, skip, phones, audio devices and the Catholic Code of Conduct.
