GRADE 11 COLLEGE BIOLOGY
SBI 3C1
STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
Welcome to the grade 11 College Biology course. My name is Ms. Lasch and I will be
your teacher for the duration of this course. This course is intended to further students’
understanding of the processes involved in biological systems. Students will study cellular
biology, microbiology, genetics, anatomy of mammals, and plants in the natural
environment. The course will emphasize practical applications of concepts, and on the
skills needed for further studies in branches of life sciences and related fields.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THIS COURSE:
The grade 11 curriculum, although interesting and extremely exciting, is also very
challenging and extensive. There are high expectations for this course. Individual
students are ultimately responsible for their own learning and achievement. Students are
expected to come to class on time, be prepared and ready to learn. You should be advised
that those students who received a 70% or lower in their previous sciences courses
will have the most difficulty in meeting course expectations.
All college preparation courses are intended to equip students with the knowledge
and skills they need to meet the entrance requirements for College programs related
to Biology. The course will not only incorporate theoretical knowledge, but it will
also provide students with concrete applications and acquire needed skills.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO BE SUCCESSFUL:
In order to ensure your success I recommend and encourage students to carry out the
following routines each day: complete regularly assigned homework, read over notes
from class on a nightly basis, read textbook and assigned readings on a nightly basis,
get extra help as soon as it is needed, create summary study sheets at the end of each
unit, discuss the course material at home with parents or friends and last but not
least, put forth your best effort on every pieces of work, after all it will reflect you and
nobody else.
The following sheets will contain information and expectations for the course. Students are
to complete the inventory sheet “Who am I,” have it signed by a parent or guardian and
resubmit it to myself as soon as possible. I look forward to working with you during this
term to ensure that your transition to college is a successful one.
Thanks
LEARNING PARTNER
A telephone network system works well when students are absent from school. Please
choose one responsible student from this class and get their permission to phone about
work missed/assigned when you were absent. This will help you keep up to date!

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
PUNCTUALITY: Always be punctual for class. It is your responsibility to make it to class on
time. If you are not in the classroom after the bell has gone, YOU ARE LATE! If you are
late, knock once on the door and patiently wait. During a break in class instruction, I will
let you enter the class. You are responsible for any missed instruction or work. In the event
that your punctuality becomes chronically poor, additional assignments, detentions or an
appropriate consequence will be assigned. Also, your parent/guardian will be contacted. If
you chose to be continually late after this, you will be dealt with by administration.
PREPAREDNESS: Student’s are expected to come to class prepared. You must supply
yourself with a 3-ring binder (a binder for biology only), 5 dividers, lined paper, graph
paper, blue and red pens, pencil, eraser, ruler, calculator, scissors, glue stick and coloured
pencils. When you arrive to class, have these materials out and ready to start work
immediately. We have a great deal of material to cover in this course and no time can be
wasted. You should also bring your agenda to class on a daily basis.
NOTEBOOK: Your notebook is expected to be neat at all times. Begin your notes each day
by recording the date and title, both should be underlined in red pen. All handouts given in
class should contain your name, period and date. The date should always be placed on the
top right hand side of the page and underlined in red pen using a ruler. All diagrams must
be coloured. Notebooks will be checked for content and neatness. Keeping your
notebook neat and organized will only benefit you when test time comes along.
HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned and checked on a regular basis. All
homework should be titled, dated and questions must be written out in pen and
answered in pencil (where corrections can be made). If homework is incomplete much of
the time, appropriate consequences will be assigned, your parent/guardian will be contacted
and if the behaviour persists, your administrator will be notified.
ASSIGNMENTS OR CULMINATING TASKS: Any minor or major assignments will be factored
into your final grade. As such your best effort is expected. Assignments will appear in the
form of Laboratory Exercises, Investigations/Research, Presentations/Projects, and Group
work. Due Dates for assignments must be followed. All assignments will be
collected at the beginning of the period. If the assignment is not submitted at the
beginning of the class on which it is due, the student will automatically lose 5%. A second
day late will result in a deduction of 10%. Once assignments/labs are returned to the class, a
mark of zero will be assigned.
PLAGIARISM: Plagiarism means that you have stolen another person’s work or ideas and
claimed them as your own. This is a school offence and will be reported to the office.
A mark of zero will be given. Be sure too properly reference all resources and put things
into your own word.
SAFETY: Everyone has the right to learn in a safe environment, one that is free from harm.
Safety in a science lab is extremely important because we will be using chemicals as well as
biological material that can be very harmful and quite dangerous. It is very important to
follow lab rules and instructions at all times. Before we begin to use any equipment and or
chemicals all safety precautions and procedures will be discussed.
ONE VERY IMPORTANT REMINDER: There will be absolutely no food or drinks
allowed in the science room.
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOUR: A certain amount of self-discipline and awareness is necessary on
your part. “Respect the safety and well being of all those in our class.” Please
understand that this means more than acting safely to ensure physical well being of those
around you. It means respecting the rights and feelings of other individuals in the class and
helping to make their learning environment the best that it can be. To that extent, it is
expected that you will chose to:
 Pay attention to what others have to say in class
 Refrain from talking while the teacher or one of your peers is speaking (put up your
hand so I know you too have something to contribute)
 Turn off and put away all electronic devices ie. cell phone, music devices
MISSED CLASS /ATTENDANCE: Due to the fast pace nature of the course, it is very
important that you do not miss any classes unless absolutely necessary. In the event that
you are legitimately away from school it is your responsibility to find out what you have
missed and get notes from somebody. You should take the opportunity to call your learning
partner.
MISSED TESTED AND QUIZZES: For any missed pre-scheduled test or quiz you will be
given an opportunity to write a makeup on the following day during your lunch period,
provided your absence is authorized (parental/guardian’s note).
UNIFORM: You are expected to be in full uniform at all times, otherwise you will
automatically be asked to see your Vice Principal.
