ASSIGNMENT My Family through the Systems Theory Background Information Systems theory is a sociology theory that attempts to explain how groups of individuals interact as a system. This theory can be applied to examine the interactions that occur within a family. The family system can be broken down into 3 subsystems: 1. Family‐unit subsystem ‐ Individuals under the same roof 2. Interpersonal subsystem ‐ Inter = between ‐ Interactions between family‐unit individuals (i.e. mother‐daughter) 3. Intrapersonal subsystem ‐ Intra = within ‐ Interaction within an individual (i.e. role as independent self vs. role in the family) A genogram is a family tree diagram that provides a visual representation of the family system and the interactions between its members. The case study entitled “Johnson Family System” on pg. 36 of your text provides an example of a genogram (This will be provided for you as we have no text). Your Task In this assignment you will be required to... (1) Draw a genogram that accurately represents the relationships in your own family system (going as far back as your grandparents). Include some (if there are lots) or all of your cousins. Your genogram must be an accurate family tree that identifies the following... o Family‐unit subsystems o Interpersonal subsystems: only identify the ones you want to discuss in your response o Types of relationships: Conflict Affectionate Note: The intrapersonal subsystem (part 3 above) is not represented on the genogram, however you may identify all the roles you play in your response. (2) Write a maximum 1 page response (double spaced) that explains family‐unit subsystems/interpersonal subsystems/types of relationships present in your genogram. Reminder: deceased members still have an influence on the family. ASSIGNMENT My Family through the Systems Theory GENOGRAM MARKING SCHEME Name: _________________________ Genogram Knowledge/ Understanding /10 ‐ Genogram is neat and relationships are easy to identify ‐ Includes a legend ‐ Use of symbols and colors Response Thinking/Inquiry /10 ‐ Correctly uses System Theory terms to label and explain relationships that exist within one’s own family system Application /10 ‐ Accurate use of symbols and terminology of the Systems Theory to identify subsystems within your family unit Communication /10 ‐ Grammatically correct, clear and easy to understand ‐ Well organized and presented in a logical sequence ‐ Correct use and explanation of System Theory terms Additional Comments:
