Have repairs made during the summer, not at the beginning of the school year • Online purchases – it is highly suggested you consult your child’s music teacher first to be sure you are getting a good brand • Avoid off-brands – these tend to cause frequent playing problems for the student and repair problems for the music stores • Avoid wholesale club and discount store purchases • BARITONES (for band) are available from the school. You may rent your own if you prefer, but they have a higher rental cost than other instruments. PRIVATE INSTRUCTION • Private instruction is not REQUIRED, but is highly RECOMMENDED • We suggest that private instruction not start until the students have started their music classes at DIS • Contact your child’s music teacher for suggestions of private teachers WESTLAKE MUSIC BOOSTERS • Provide support to all music programs in Westlake City Schools (grades PK12) • Meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in the WHS Library • More information can be found at: www.westlakemb.org • Always looking for new members and volunteers! TH 5 GRADE CHOIR CHOIR • Choir is a SINGING based class • Most students see Mrs. Gregory twice a week • 5th Grade Choir sings in two-part harmony • Students will have access to sheet music to practice at home • Choir is a participation based class • Concert attendance is required TH 5 GRADE ORCHESTRA ORCHESTRA – CLASSROOM SUPPLIES • Instrument with name tag • Pencil • Folder (mark name, instrument, and grade clearly on the front!) • Method Book • 1 box of tissues • Rosin (usually comes with the instrument) ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS 2000 FOR STRINGS BOOK 1 (ORANGE) Used by every String student Available in local music stores Make sure you have the correct book! Sponge = good, Shoulder Rest = best CELLO - SUPPLIES End Pin Rest/Stopper/Puck – to keep the instrument in place while playing TH 5 GRADE BAND INSTRUMENT FAMILIES Woodwinds Brass Percussion *Uses multiple keys (“buttons”) on the instrument to produce various notes. *Uses various lip pressures on the mouthpiece to produce various notes. *Creates sound by striking instrument surfaces. FLUTE CLARINET SAXOPHONE TRUMPET *Learns a variety of instruments throughout the year. TROMBONE *Bells (melodic) BARITONE *Practice Pad (rhythmic) MORNING CLASSES • In order to keep class sizes manageable, we offer some before school small group “like” instrument classes. • 7:45-8:25 • Selection is determined by enrollment and staffing • Percussion students will DEFINITELY have a morning class • Other instruments are usually volunteer based • A letter will come home the first couple weeks of school if this program is available for your child BAND – CLASSROOM SUPPLIES • Instrument with name tag • Pencil (no pens, colored pencils, or markers!) • Folder (provided by teacher) • Method Book • Last names A-L – 1 box of tissues • Last names M-Z – 1 bottle of hand sanitizer STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE BOOK 1 (RED) Used by every Band student Available in local music stores. Will use for 5th AND 6th grade band You DO NOT need the enhanced edition with the CDs—that is totally optional (costs extra.) Make sure you have the correct book! We used a different book last year! Local music stores will have our supply list on hand. FLUTE - SUPPLIES Thumbport – a “snap-on” thumb rest. Will help students to balance the instrument and hold it in the correct position to produce the best tone Cleaning Rod – used to clean the instrument after each use. Most instruments come with this supply. If buying used, you may have to purchase one. (Metal, Wood, or Plastic) Cleaning Cloth – untreated silk or cotton. This is NOT the same as a polishing cloth! The chemicals will ruin the pads. • • Bandana (wash multiple times to de-starch) Old T-Shirt (cut small enough to fit) CLARINET/SAXOPHONE - SUPPLIES Reeds – produces the sound. Students are required to have four GOOD reeds (no chips, breaks, cracks) at all times. BRAND DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE! (www.wwbw.com) Reed Guard – Protects the reeds and prolongs their length of use. Keeps them from warping. Neck Strap (Sax only) – comes with most instruments. Tends Swab – used to clean the instrument out after each use. Needs to to tangle, so please check on its status every now and then. be specific to clarinet/saxophone (weighted.) Cork Grease – will keep the corks lubricated. quite a while. One tube will last TRUMPET/TROMBONE/BARITONE- SUPPLIES Valve Oil (Trumpet/Baritone) – lubricates the valves and keeps them from sticking Slide Oil (Trombone) – lubricates the trombone slide and keeps it from sticking Slide Grease – lubricates the tuning slides on all brass instruments Cleaning Snake – cleans out residue from the inside of the instrument Mouthpiece Brush – used to scrub the mouthpiece PERCUSSION - SUPPLIES Stick Bag – allows easy and safe storage of all sticks and mallets. Allows students to store sticks/mallets in locker during school day. Vic Firth SD1 Drum Sticks – a much better quality stick than what comes with most rentals. Allows all of our drumming to sound the same. Markings on the stick also help students learn proper hand placement/technique.
