Collaboration fosters innovation and cuts costs

Impinj staff knew companywide video conferencing and unified communications would help fuel fast growth. A single vendor platform made it painless.

I love the new collaboration tools. Some of our best remote meetings ever happened today.

Eric Brodersen, Chief Operating Officer, Impinj

Imagine communications systems not talking to each other. Small wonder Impinj people were struggling. Cisco brought them together on any device, anywhere.

Challenges

• Enhance communication for mobile workers

• Increase efficiency across the company

• Improve the bottom line through effective teamwork

Helping drive innovation in the Internet of Things (IoT) at the forefront of RFID technology, Impinj is growing fast. Many of its people work remotely or travel a lot. But keeping in touch with them wasn’t easy.

“Our many telephone systems were incompatible,” says Morgan Van Wely, senior IT director. “As well as lacking scalability the setup didn’t support collaborative working.”

Moving to a new headquarters gave the company the chance to start afresh.

High on its wish list was video conferencing. Analyzing the market made the case clear: a unified communications platform would be easier and cheaper to manage.

People save time and the company saves money with Cisco Jabber® and

TelePresence® solutions.

Solutions

• Employees connect anytime, anywhere, on any device, using Cisco Jabber technology

• Cisco® Collaboration Meeting Rooms (CMR) Hybrid enables an easy-to-use video-meeting experience for everyone

• Cisco wired and wireless networking forms a secure foundation

Pervasive video for intuitive interaction

Now every employee has a laptop with the Cisco Jabber solution, a built-in webcam, a softphone client, and a headset. They can make voice and video calls anywhere in the world.

Presence, integrated with the directory, makes it easy for them to contact colleagues and check their availability. It takes seconds to set up or join a video meeting. Interactions are more intuitive because people can see each other’s body language.

All conference rooms have Cisco TelePresence® technology. The CMR Hybrid solution transforms them into venues for productive meetings that include remote and mobile colleagues and business-to-business (B2B) participants.

• Shorter and more productive meetings

• Increased efficiency in vital processes including recruitment and product development

• Reduced IT spending for new hires by $450

• New highs in staff satisfaction

Smarter processes lift productivity and innovation

Poor productivity costs companies a lot. Well-attended meetings that start on time are money in the bank. The best Impinj example is the executive leadership team’s daily review. With Cisco TelePresence these meetings take only 15 minutes, and each one counts.

Use of video is sparking innovation. It’s used for Agile software code reviews, bringing new products to market quicker by speeding up development cycles.

Video has also boosted employee satisfaction and engagement. It’s supporting recruitment with virtual interviews for job candidates too.

Costs are coming down across the business. Feeling comfortable with video, people are traveling less. Want proof? In the most recent quarter, the Californian sales team made 50 percent fewer business trips.

“Working with Cisco we discovered economies everywhere. With other vendors, to get the capabilities we wanted, we found we’d have to invest more and install more,” Morgan explains.

Consolidated infrastructure, streamlined deployment

Because it’s more efficient working with one partner and one vendor,

IT spending is falling too. For example, the cost of equipping every new employee has dropped by $450. More IT budget is being freed for other projects.

Cisco partner Collora Networks designed and installed the system. “Collora people are fantastic to work with,” Morgan confirms. “They combine deep knowledge of Cisco technologies with a can-do attitude. They made the entire experience virtually painless.”

Finance gets things going faster

By spreading costs over three years, Cisco Capital® funding cemented the business case. From day one the company got the latest Cisco benefits while avoiding an upfront cash burden.

“Cisco Capital came up with the ideal financing solution,” concludes Ryan

Shafer, corporate controller. “They offered a competitive rate, a quick response, and outstanding customer service. Risk was reduced too.”
