Principal’s Message:
which made my job as principal a lot easier.
Lent is a time for prayer, penance and works
of charity that give hope to those in need.
During the time of Lent we pay special attention to preparing our hearts, minds and souls
for the joyous feast of Easter. Our Ash
Wednesday liturgy and Lenten mass were
two special events that helped our students
appreciate and understand this special time
of the year. Many thanks to all parents who
attended our Lenten mass and have shared
in our Lenten journey with us. Also, thanks
in advance to all of you for supporting our
Lenten project and Dr. Simone through your
donations of goods for the less fortunate.

As you may or may not be aware, March
2012 represents my last month as principal
of St. Raymond School and an employee of
the DPCDSB as I will be retiring on March
30, 2012. I feel extremely fortunate that my
personal situation allows me to make this
decision at this time but with the excitement
associated with this life change comes the
sadness and realization of missing the many
people I will no longer have the pleasure of
serving. So at this time, please allow me this
opportunity to thank those responsible for
the many fond memories I bring with me
down south to the Niagara Region where I
now reside.
Thank you:

To the staff of St. Raymond School who
work very hard each and every day to
help make your child’s school a safe,
secure and educationally fun place to be


To the parents of the students of St. Raymond School for your warm welcome, continued support, encouragement and belief
that the best scenario for your child is the
one where the school and home works together to solve the inevitable problems and
situations that arise in all children’s lives as
they mature.
To Father Marc-Andre and Father Matthias
who have supported our school and school
community spiritually and who have reaffirmed my belief that we have a very faith
-filled staff and group of respectful students
attending here.
To the students of St. Raymond, who have
enthusiastically supported all aspects of
school life and made me feel that the time
spent trying to make them proud to attend
St. Raymond was worthwhile and appreciated.
Finally, wishing all associated with St. Raymond School an abundance of happiness,
good health and success in all that you do.
May God bless all of you and your families
throughout the remainder of this year and the
years ahead.

A Lenten Prayer
Lord, Jesus Christ
By Your passion, death and resurrection
You have set us free from sin and death.
May Your grace renew our hearts this Lent
And help us to turn from sin in our lives.
May we learn to appreciate more deeply the
Sacrifice You made for us.
Accept our prayer, fasting and acts of charity as
We seek to draw closer to You during this
Holy Season. Strengthen the faith of Your people
So that we may be a sign of Your love to all the world.

Reconciliation
Congratulations to our Grade 2’s
who received the sacrament of reconciliation at the school on Tuesday, February 21, 2012. Many
thanks to Mrs. Yuzik, Ms. Barran
and Mrs. LeBrun for preparing our
students and for the beautiful liturgy
which preceded the conferring of
the sacrament. Also, special thanks
to Fr. Matthias for his spiritual leadership and to several of our student
faith ambassadors who assisted.
This is another big step in our
Grade 2’s faith journey.
Virtue of the Month Kindness
Confirmation
Grade 8 Student Volunteers
Our grade 8 students will be receiving the sacrament of Confirmation on Thursday April 19th,
2012 at 7:00 p.m. In preparation for this special
event, the students will be attending a full day
retreat at St. Joseph’s Parish on Friday March
23rd, 2012. The students will be engaged in
many spirit filled activities as they continue their
journey in faith. If you have not yet registered
your child for Confirmation with the parish,
please do not hesitate to do so.
On January 17th, January 19th and January 20th,
the grade eight students were living the Gospel
when they volunteered their time at the Canadian Food For Children Warehouse. Founded
by Dr. Andrew Simone, Canadian Food for Children helps those who are less fortunate. Our
students worked on the warehouse floor sorting
items, and loading containers with various donated items. The volunteers at the warehouse
were extremely pleased with the generous donations given by the St. Raymond community. It
was an experience that brought us all closer to
God as we rose to the call to serve others. The
students realized the power they do have to initiate change and to help their global brothers and
sisters. We will be continuing our efforts this
Lenten season to STOMP out poverty.
EQAO Grade 3 and Grade 6 Testing
The EQAO (Education
Quality and Accountability
Office) testing of our Grade
3 and 6 students will take
place from May 23rd
through to June 6th.
Please try to avoid scheduling any doctor’s appointments or anything else that will take your child
out of school during the testing dates. Tests
and materials cannot be given out to parents
prior to or during the testing. Previous media
accounts revealed that some parents and children become anxious about this test. Please
try to keep this testing in perspective for your
child. A letter to grade 3 and 6 parents with
further information will be sent home closer to
the testing dates.
March Break Dates
March Break this year takes place
March 12th to March 16th inclusive.
We return to school Monday, March
19th. Enjoy your time with your
families and friends.
Calling All Grade 7s and 8s !!!
Starting after the March Break, the Grade 7 and 8 students of St. Raymond School will have the
opportunity to be part of our Literacy and/or Numeracy After-School Classes. These classes are a
wonderful way to help your child grow in skill and confidence in the areas of literacy and numeracy.
The Literacy and/or Numeracy Programs which run separately will take place after school from 3:15
-4:30 pm on Monday and Wednesday for Numeracy and Tuesday and Thursday for Literacy. The
10 hour program for each literacy and numeracy is free to all intermediate students. Our very own
Mr. Allen and Mr. Paterson will be teaching the classes – a bonus for all our intermediate students. Information and permission forms will be coming home shortly – take advantage of these
free classes and return the permission form by March 9, 2012 to your child’s teacher.
Forest of Reading Program
The Forest of Reading® is Canada's largest recreational reading program! This initiative of the
Ontario Library Association (OLA) offers seven reading programs to encourage a love of reading in
people of all ages. The Forest helps celebrate Canadian books, publishers, authors and illustrators.
More than 250,000 readers participate annually.
St. Raymond students have been reading the nominated books from the Forest of Reading Award Nomination
Lists. For the first time at St. Raymond, a Wiki was created enabling students to post a review of the book he/she had read.
Countless reviews were posted over the last three months from students ranging from grade 3 to 8. Because of the overwhelming student participation, the Forest of Reading Wiki was a huge success! As a result, the Forest of Reading Wiki
will continue next year when the new nominees are announced in October. I look forward to reading the reviews.
It is now time to vote for your favourite nominated Forest of Reading book. Your son/daughter,
___________________________________, has fulfilled the required number of books read and is eligible to vote for his/
her favourite book nominee. Voting will take place on Wednesday, March 7th at 12:30pm in the library. As a reward for
participation in the program, students will be given two slices of pepperoni pizza for lunch.
Sincerely,
L. Goncalves

I met a child who loves to read, who didn’t own a book,
I found a few more just like her when I took a closer look.
I rallied troops behind me, and I sought books by the heap.
And now we find the kids in need and give them books… for keeps!

Help support Books for Keeps....
Books for Keeps, is a non-profit organization in Athens, Georgia that is dedicated to stopping the summer slide.
The summer slide occurs when students have no access to books, away from school, and fall behind
their peers. Just 12 books the student wants to read can make a huge difference.
From Monday March 4th until Thursday April 5th St. Raymond’s will host a book drive to collect used
books in good condition to send to Athens, Georgia to help in their efforts. Collections will be Wednesday’s during second nutrition break.
NEWS FROM THE COACHES
Intermediate Boys Basketball
The intermediate boys basketball team had an
incredible season, finishing with a 3-2 record,
good for second place in our division. The team
qualified for a playoff game against Mary Fix,
narrowly being edged out 15-12 in a very hard
fought game. The boys developed continually
throughout the season, playing tremendous defensive ball, and using their individual strengths
to work together and put up points as a team.
Accolades must be given to our bench players,
who provided us great depth, never failed to
hustle when on the floor and had great patience
with Mr. Allen and his coaching! All players
were essential to our success, and thanks and
congratulations goes out to: Anthony A., Joseph
C., Patrick C., Russell N., Karsten N., Eric P.
Daniel P., Gianmarco P., Kishi P., Richard R.,
Layth S., Jordan S., Daniel T., and Kyle T.
Thank you to David H., a St. Joseph’s S.S. student, for his help this season, as well.
St. Raymond Chess Team
The intermediate and junior teams have been established and the students trained hard for their
Tournament at St. Mark’s Elementary School on
March 2, 2012. The coaching staff of Mr. Paterson and Mr. Allen would like to congratulate and
thank those students who tried out and just fell
short of making the team. Also many thanks to
the following students who we are very proud of
as they represented St. Raymond in the tournament. Congratulations to the Intermediate Team
who placed 4th out of 16 teams.
Junior Division: Mark A., Carlos C., Christian H.,
Michael B., Finnegan S.
Intermediate Division: Eric P., Alen F., George
G., Rosemary N., Bavly F.
To encourage students to continue playing chess
throughout the year, St. Raymond will be starting
a Chess Club. The club will be open to anyone
whom is interested in learning chess or simply improving their overall skill level. More details to follow, over the morning announcements, during the
first week of March.

Water bottless Wednesdays
We are recycling batteries at St. Raymond
School. Simply, drop your used batteries into the
recycling bin in the front foyer of the school.
Thank you.
Did you know? Only 1 out of every 6 water bottles is recycled? It takes 450 years for a plastic
bottle to decompose? City tap water is tested
every 4 hours but bottled water only needs to be
tested once every 1 – 3 years?
Now you know why we want to eliminate the use
of plastic bottles at St. Raymond. On Wednesdays (or everyday) bring a reusable bottle to
school (and work) INSTEAD of a plastic water
bottle. You will feel better and will help your
school and community reduce the amount of
plastic in landfills.
Let’s all do our part to
help !!!!
ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER
In an effort to be more environmentally responsible, St. Raymond School is providing its school
newsletter electronically to parents/guardians. By providing us with an email address, you will be
able to support our efforts to protect our environment by reducing the amount of paper and electricity
we use in preparing paper newsletters. We will be able to send you our school newsletter, more efficiently and effectively if we have your email address. Of course, should you prefer not to provide us
your email address, we will provide a paper copy of the newsletter to your child (youngest and only)
to bring home.
If you are interested in receiving the school newsletters via email and NOT a paper copy, please fill in
the items below and return to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. Thank you.

Lenten support drive items ……….
S is for Soap.
Soap is so important for the poor. Lack of soap means lack of dignity and morale for a
person. Imagine how you would feel if you could not reach for a bar of soap to wash
your hands and face or to wash your clothes? A little soap goes a long way, it is more
than the gift of cleanliness, it buys self respect.
T is for Toothbrushes and Toothpaste.
When a person cannot clean and take care of their teeth, they do not feel good about
themselves. These hygiene products also help to build and restore dignity.
O is for Oil.
Vegetable oil helps the body absorb three essential vitamins; Vitamins A, D and K. In
providing these vitamins we can help prevent blindness, bone disease and blood disorders.
M is for Milk, Powdered Milk.
Milk helps to feed and nourish children. It also provides them with Vitamins A and D.
P is for Plastic.
Plastic bags and plastic containers with lids. These are priceless. The plastic bags
that we use for garbage are used to keep and protect food. They protect food from
vermin. Plastic margarine or yogurt tubs can be used to store water and used as bowls.
