Read to your child daily— make it a pleasurable experience Stress good listening. Hold the book upright and turn pages slowly from front to back. Encourage your child to look left to right at the sentences and pictures. Use your fingers to help track eye movement left to right. Occasionally, point out new words but do not focus on them too long. Have a good location where children can keep books and browse if they wish. Use words such as: front, cover, open, turn page, back. Place a green dot on the first page to help your child look for the dot to start reading. Teach your child to look at the left page first and model this each time you read.
