Brugmans Cover Photo Anielika Sykes Principal’s Message Lenten Season The Easter weekend is always a hopeful time for us, as a St. Paul community, because new life stirs everywhere and we reach the mid point in our second semester. Fr. Leo reminded us at our Easter Mass to think of our best friends and to thank God daily for all of our blessings. On Thursday April 8th our Grade 10 students took their EQAO Literacy Test and the Grade Nine students were given an opportunity to do a mock test in order to prepare for next year. Afterwards, the students were treated to a brilliant dramatic production called “Diss” by the Mixed Company Theater that focused upon a variety of themes, including bullying and racism. Senior students used the day to work on independent study units and to prepare for mid term tests. The soccer fields and baseball diamonds are calling no less than five St. Paul teams with fabulous prospects to advance to the ROPSAA championships. With the tremendous enthusiasm for soccer in our Grade Nine class, we have decided to enter a Junior girls team this year and are satisfied that the girls can compete at the Tier 1 level. It’s with considerable regret that we will have to say “bon voyage” to two veteran members of the St. Paul staff who have decided to retire. Mavourneen McHenry who has anchored our Guidance and Academic Resource Department for over a decade has decided to trade in the hectic responsibility of managing two departments for a more relaxed pace of life. Similarly our Teacher-Librarian extraordinaire, Mena Piperni, has decided that this is to be her last year of service to our community. Staff, parents and students wish both of our colleagues a wonderful time in their future endevours. We would like to congratulate John Tsilfidis, our Acting Department Head of Science for his promotion to the permanent role of Department Head and Mr. Guilherme for his assignment to our Library. Our PIP program welcomed Ms. Gina Macera at the start of second semester, after we said goodbye to Will Schuster. Mr. Scuster has gone to Fr. Michael Goetz Secondary School. Blessings and congratulations for Ms. DiCarlo on the impending arrival of her second child and start of maternity leave. With two new secondary schools expanding and one new school opening, the first set of postings was a bonanza for many teachers seeking a new challenge, and inevitably St. Paul was going to see some of our teachers move to greener and closer fields. We will be saying farewell to Ms. Laxton, from our Math Department, Ms. De Marco from our Science Department and Mr. O’Reilly from our Social Science and Religion Departments. Apart from the energy and spirit of these great young teachers , we will be missing their solid artistic and coaching contributions. As I reported to the Parent Council last month, the tendering of our new Studio equipment should be completed by April 15th and we are shooting for an end of month delivery. Parents and students should notice improved production values, once our analog equipment has been replaced by High Definition (HD). St. Paul’s application for a High Skills Major in Energy has been approved by the Ministry of Education and the Pathway will be promoted shortly on our school website. York University Faculty of Education has asked us to continue the partnership established last year with some different teachers stepping up as Mentors. The partnership has added immense value to St. Paul and the caliber of our student teachers has been extraordinary. Some St. Paul teachers have taken advantage of a new web site system and we would welcome any feedback that you have on the sites. Teachers will not be communicating interactively on these sites at my direction. We have been in discussion with McCarthys around a summer short and are waiting for samples to be shared as soon as the opportunity presents. In 2007-08 St. Paul’s Parent Council recommended the elimination of the kilt portion of the uniform in a graduated sequence, recognizing parents’ financial commitment to that part of the uniform. The kilt can no longer be purchased at McCarthys and next year we will see the last grade cycle out of St. Paul. The shorts that McCarthys recommend have a distinct small wolverine logo similar to the style used at some other Catholic secondary schools. As per usual, we will profile our samples in the main foyer. Some parents have noticed and commented that Friday’s regular dress down for our staff has a distinct relaxed feel around the school. In exchange for the business casual code on that day, staff have enlisted the services of the Catholic Adoption Agency, Chalice, to adopt a five year old Haitian boy, Djefken Meus. For only $33.00 per month, we have been able to send our foster child to school and provide him with enough nutritional sustenance to be ready for learning when he gets there. Bravo St. Paul!! ›››Chaplaincy Jesus is Risen Our Living As I write this note another season of Tim Horton’s Roll up the Rim to Win is over. Not only did I not win anything more than a free coffee and donut, I don’t think I know anyone that did win anything of substance. There were some great prizes available to win. I hope that you had more luck than I did? Rolling up the Rim is an amusing Canadian past time. It’s a nice distraction. It’s better than cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs. I suppose reading the words: “Please Play Again” on the side of the cup after you roll up the rim is not as bad as being confronted with the reality “Sorry you’re a loser.” The next time you and I roll up the rim let us try to remember that on Easter Morning the stone covering Jesus’ tomb was rolled away. Jesus rose from the dead and the Hosts of Heaven rolled open His tomb. Are there any barriers in our life that separate us from Jesus that need to be rolled away? Maybe the obstacles are heavy and we need help? If there are some barriers, let’s try to help each other move them and get closer to Jesus. Let’s all get rolling! Eternal life awaits us all. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Easter is such a wonderful time that these words literally roll off our lips! Faith Happy Easter! ›››Parent Council So many events transpire over the course of the school year that it’s difficult to decipher which events had the most meaning. With very little time left this year, students will begin to focus on finishing the year on a high note. Our graduates will leave us and begin new lives in furthering their education, or in some cases start in new career paths. As people come and go from the school, we continue to establish and increase our parental involvement. We have been blessed with such a positive and supportive St. Paul school community. Two of our parents from council will move on as they have students who will graduate this year: • C. Bissola, our Parent Council Secretary has been very supportive of St. Paul’s for years and has provided the existing co-chairs with advice from her years at St. Paul. • R. Skakun has been an active member and supporter of council since her daughter started Grade 9. We have been fortunate to have these parents as council members. your shirt! With only one parent council meeting left this school year (in May) we are eager to welcome and invite new parents to our group. Students graduating, along with parents leaving, we will require extra help on Parent Council next year. Why not consider being involved at St. Paul? The commitment time is definitely less than in elementary school. Parents, staff and administration come together at our council meetings to discuss issues, get updates on school events and share ideas. No elaborate fundraising. Throughout the year, various guest speakers, presentations or information evenings are organized for parents/guardians to attend. Tips for Parents. Did You Know? Our Parent Council assists as necessary in such events as, Open House, Parent/Teacher Interview nights, BBQ’s and Talent Night. By being involved in the School Council, it is a great way to meet other parents and staff. We have 7 meetings per school year. And guess what... once you have been to 5 consecutive meetings you will receive a St. Paul’s Golf shirt, you are a true supporter when you receive • To view the morning announcements on YouTube. Our last meeting for this school year is Wednesday, May 12th, 2010 at 7pm in the school Library. ›››Athletics Discipline, Dedication, Determination Spring is in the air. The St. Paul Athletic Council has been busy working to prepare for the “Biggest Event of the Year”, Fitness Friday, an entire morning dedicated to fitness and getting fit. Miss Schlarp, back from a fabulous sabbatical travelling, is working with Kim Naval, Michelle Raposo, Susanna Sousa and Alex Zubilewich to plan a day that will be unforgettable! Encourage your children to sign up as soon as possible, so that they can get their first or second activity choices. Special thanks to Mr. O’Reilly, who has taken the initiative to start up a Floorball team at St. Paul. The boys are really excited about their upcoming tournament at York U, as well as the Floorball workshop being held on Fitness Friday. Congratulations to Mr. Vicars and Mr. Connelly for a successful run with the girl’s Varsity Volleyball Team, as they made it to OFSAA this year. St. Paul is becoming quite a soccer power, as we field 4 teams this year; two for the boys and two for the girls. This year’s Badminton Team is one of the biggest that St. Paul has ever had! Thanks to Ms. Tatone, Ms. Pereira and Mr. Costigan for their help coaching. Floorball For the first time this spring, St. Paul will be entering a Floorball Team in the Canada Cup tournament at York University. The Wolverines will play 4 games during the one day tournament which takes place on Friday, May 21st. Floorball is an immensely popular sport in Scandinavia and is used in the off season by hockey players to further develop hand-eye coordination. It is a fast paced, exciting sport whose rules promote fitness and safety of all those who participate. Furthermore, Juha Mikkola, founder of FloorballPro.com will be coming to St. Paul to conduct a clinic for all those interested in the game during Wellness Day on Friday, May 14th. If your son or daughter is interested in this sport, please encourage them to sign up! The inaugural members of the Wolverines Floorball team are Tanner Bloome, Denis Cascioli, Zack Cunha, Ryan Da Silva, Devon Dunn, Kane Elliot, Ryan Faria, Nick Gutt, Mike Kokot, Greg Leclair, Ricardo Marques, Keith Matush, Austin Nix, Brett Ponting, Tyler Rutledge, Anthony Sousa, and Brandyn Vessio. Coaches are Mr. S. Derry, Mr. C. Vicars, and Mr. C. O’Reilly. Flag Football The Lady Wolverine’s Flag Football Team will be hosting their 2nd annual June Jamboree tournament on Tuesday June 1. The tournament is designed to develop new players by giving them a taste of the game, as well, it provides the senior players another opportunity to play and mentor the new recruits prior to graduation. There will be a live DJ providing music during the day as well as a team skills competition during the lunch period. If the tournament is anything like last year, this year is going to provide some outstanding football entertainment. It should be a lot of ‘Fun in the Sun’ (We are praying for good weather). Girls Varsity Volleyball The Girls Varsity Volleyball Team had a most impressive year and managed to win the ROPSSAA Girls “AA” Championship by defeating Ste. Famille Secondary. The team competed in the OFSAA Tournament in Perth, Ontario and was able to make the consolation round before bowing out to De LA Salle College from Ottawa. The team had an outstanding 7 and 1 record during the regular season and made it to ›››Athletics the quarter finals in both the Joan of Arc tournament and the Notre Dame tournament. the year. Special thanks to Daniel and Dillon Ljubicic for their excellent work as student managers. The steady and consistent play of Tanya Piitz, Kristy Mlakar, Lilla Matteliano, Emily Porfido and Leslie Skakun provided a veteran presence and significantly contributed to the teams overall success. Coach Vicars and Connelly are very proud of the girls for their achievements this year. Second year players Luba Sulypka, Nicole Kolenda and Patrica Gluszak made impressive progress and played with enthusiasm and determination in all of their games. Congratulations to Stephanie DiTella, Aneta Steciuk, Amanda Forest and Katelyn Turk who demonstrated great support, improvement and sportsmanship throughout Junior Boys Soccer The Junior Boys Soccer team has been gearing up for another season. We have been preparing since the start of Semester One with morning tryouts once-a-week, running well into December. Thanks to all the players who have faithfully shown up, bright and early. The mild weather has helped immensely as we can run our practices outdoor, now in Semester Two. Our hope for this season will to finish with a winning record, and make it to the playoffs. This is our expectation, given that we have switched to the Tier II division. Badminton This year’s Badminton Team is looking better than ever! Both the junior and the senior team are made up of dedicated and talented individuals who will hopefully carry St. Paul to the championships. The seniors had their ROPSSAA qualifying tournament on April 13th, and the juniors will began their season with their first home game against Cawthra Park after school on April ›››Athletics 19th. After a series of league games, the juniors will begin their playoffs on May 14th. rates; sedentary lifestyles of teens and the imminent dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. Coaches Tatone, Costigan and Pereira wish the juniors and seniors the best of luck for a smashing season! The Sr. Executive of the St. Paul Athletic Council of Kim Naval, Michelle Raposo, Susanna Sousa and Alex Zubilewich, has been working with Miss Schlarp to plan this fun-filled day of activity. We are partnering with community facilities such as the Fitness Institute and Cawthra Community Center to help make this day a success. Students will be able to take tennis lessons, cycle, go rock climbing, dance a little zumba, do weightroom workouts with a personal trainer, fitness classes, yoga, meditation, floorball, just to mention a few. Fitness Friday May 14th, 2010 The Department of Physical and Health Education is so excited to be presenting Fitness Friday on May 14, 2010. Canadians were so excited about “Owning the Podium” during the Olympics, but now it’s time to get the students of St. Paul moving into a fit, active lifestyle. With the new curriculum being compressed into 4 years, the students are experiencing higher levels of stress. Many students are finding it difficult to incorporate Physical and Health education into their studies after their Grade 9/10 compulsory credit. As a result, we feel it is very necessary to encourage and empower the entire student with a day dedicated to getting moving. Every week, we read another article on increasing childhood obesity There will be a $5 fee to cover lunch as well as the Carnival Day in the afternoon. A few of the activities, such as Rock Climbing, Bowling, Laser Quest and Golf, will have additional fees. Make sure you don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to kick start your fitness program. There will be something for everyone. Health Corner Breakfast- a great way to start the day! It has been proven that a good breakfast helps teens concentrate better at school, improve their problem solving skills, and be more alert and energetic. Many teens, struggle with getting to school on time, let alone taking time to sit with a good breakfast. Parents should encourage their teens to wake up that extra 15 minutes earlier, so that they can “Break the Fast” with a nutritious breakfast. Too often, students run into school late, grab a couple of cookies in the cafeteria and call that their breakfast. Within an hour, their blood sugar begins to drop and their ability to concentrate in class diminishes. A healthy breakfast should consist of whole grains, found in cereals or oatmeal; protein, found in eggs, cheese, peanut butter, lean meat, dairy, found in milk, yogurt or sliced cheese and fruits and vegetables. A recent Peel Region health report found that a staggering 50% of teens don’t even have one fruit or vegetable each day. This will have serious implications on their health. Some quick and easy breakfast ideas: Hot oatmeal topped with almonds and fresh fruit Whole grain cereals (not the high sugar types) with vanilla yogurt and berries Smoothies are yummy made with milk, low fat yogurt, fruit- such as banana Cheese melt with tomatoes For more information on healthy breakfasts see www.breakfastforlearning.ca ›››Coop Education Experience St. Paul’s ever popular Co-op Program is still growing as we take on a continuous intake of students, even though we are half way through the semester. Our latest additions are Maria Arizza , Kysha States and Conrad Kozlowski. They will practice in trades such as cooking, hostessing and auto body repair, as well as catch up on their school credits. This semester we have over 60 students working, in the music business, as teacher trainees, in the catering industry and as dental hygienists. In addition our High Skills Major students are practicing in the construction trades, in TV production and environmental studies. Second semester at St. Paul in the Drama Department is gearing up to be a scary one (in a good sense of course). Both of Mr. Guilherme’s, junior and senior Drama classes have been hard at work to make this one of their best semesters to date. From fairytales, to trips to Wonderland with Alice, to Greek tragedies, to bad romances, to Young Frankenstein, this is gearing up to be one of the most memorable semesters yet. The senior students (Grades 11 and 12) started their year studying children’s books and how these stories continue to survive and impact our lives. After studying some of our favourite tales, the students decided to bring one of them to life; the classic tale of Cinderella-- but, like everything else in this class, done with a twist. Amanda Barre, Victoria Bettencourt, Samantha De Melo, Amanda Forest, Rachel Maclure, Teresa Nguyen, Kristina Pantarotto, Valerie Michelle, Joelle Skaf and Jibar Mahamoud brought to life the characters of this unforgettable play. Once the students rehearsed, produced and polished this short play, the senior drama students invited the Grade One class from Queen of Heaven Elementary to be their audience and critics. The reviews were excellent. The junior class (Grade 10) has been busy getting acquainted with the wonderful world of theatre and all its facets. We started the semester with fun get to know you games, tried our luck with some accents, and explored the golden age of radio plays. The dance and movement unit was an exciting one where students learned, from an industry professional, choreography to some of today’s greatest hits. The culminating assignment for this unit saw the students present their newly acquired movement skills to their peers with an all out performance to a musical selection from “Young Frankenstein.” On April 16th, as part of St. Paul’s tradition to expose students to live theater, both classes attended the highly acclaimed Mirvish production of Mel Brooks’ Young Frankenstein. After lunch and a quick walk around Toronto’s theatre district, the students headed to the Princess of Whales to enjoy this great show. The students will soon begin to work on their final exams where they will put to use all of the skills acquired throughout the year. Super- duper! Dufferin-Peel CDSB Skills Competitions Congratulations to all the participants in this year’s Skills Canada Competitions. The students were religious in their training for their own competition event. The Board Competition was held at St. Aloysius Gonzaga on March 25 and the Gold Medal winners proceed to the provincial competitions in Waterloo on May 17, 18, 19. Here are the top 10 questions about SHSM’s answered. Why is there a High Skills Major Diploma? The Ministry of Education initiated SHSM’s in 2007-08 to encourage student success and engagement. Their objective was to increase graduation rates and narrow the gap between students working at different levels as well as to deliver new Diploma pathways for students in Applied, Academic and Workplace streams. What is a High Skills Major Diploma? A bundle of 8 - 10 Grade 11 and Grade 12 credits that include: • 4 major credits that provide sectorspecific knowldge and skills. • 2 - 4 other required credits from the Ontario Curriculum, in which expectations are met through learning activities contextualized to the sector. • 2 Co-op Education credits that provide authentic learning experiences in a workplace setting. • Experiential Learning Activities within the sector. • “Reach Ahead” Experiences connected with the student’s chosen postsecondary pathway. • Development of key Essential Skills and Work Habits required in their sector. What is Experiential Learning? Experiential Learning activities give students opportunities to explore, observe, participate in and reflect on a variety of sector-specific experiences and careers, such as: • Job Twinning/Shadowing. • Attendance at a Trade-related show. • Participation in a local, provincial or national competition. What is a Reach Ahead? Reach Ahead experiences can range from visiting a college to investigate the program a student is considering, to sitting in on university classes in a student’s field of interest, to discussing the postsecondary education, training, and experiences of someone in the occupation a student is interested in. What are Essential Skills? They are skills that enable people to perform tasks required in their jobs and to participate fully in the workplace and in the community. The Essential Skills are transferable from school to work, job to job and sector to sector. Do I Need to take any Prerequisites before grade 11? No. It is advisable, however, to look closely at how your grade nine and ten courses can enhance your pathway. What is a Pathway? A Pathway is a well-defined package of study, that consists of distinct components or modules, where the emphasis is on the tailoring of the package to the individual’s needs. Can my child earn High Skills Major Diploma and go to college or university? Yes. They will have to take the same compulsory credits to earn a regular high school diploma (30 credits) to gain entrance to either post secondary destination in consultation with their counsellor. What makes the High Skills Red Seal diploma different from a regular diploma? The “red seal” diploma is a verification that the student has earned some “specific industry certifications” which a regular student won’t earn. What certifications will my child receive? All 3 Sectors share the following compulsory certifications: • Level A CPR (St. John Ambulance) • WHMIS • Standard First Aid Plus at least 3 more sector specific certifications geared toward your choice of High Skills Major. ›››Bits & Bites Omnia Cum Corde Felicitations! Marie Tacbas, also successfully completed and passed the Motion 4 Pro exam and now holds Pro Certificaiton status in both Final Cut Pro and Motion. St. Paul Drama Club Presents... This year, St. Paul will be presenting the play, Said the Spider to the Spy, a Farce in Two Acts, written by Fred Carmichael and directed by J.P. Guilherme and Stage Managed by M. Gardash. The story takes place in a Miami Beach Florida oceanfront house. It’s got spies, reporters, socialites, a murderer, a writer and plenty of special agents all trying to figure out who has a secret package. Augusta Waycross borrows the identity and beach home of her friend, a best selling romance author, touching off a series of mistaken identities. A cache of Columbian heroin is left in the house by a missing guest, attracting various characters to the location. A detective passes out after mistakingly overdosing on sleepings and drowsily awakes thinking he’s Adel’s husband – but so does a mysterious young man who keeps calling the Missing Person’s Bureau to find out who he is. Augusta and a friend try to catch the drug king pin but the real Adele shows up to find herself surrounded by men claming to be her husband – including her real husband who turns up with an odd couple from the women’s club. The play will be presented on two nights only: May 26 - Dinner Theatre - 8:00 p.m. Curtain - $25 May 27 - French Café - 7:30 p.m. Curtain - $10 New Look As you’ve no doubt noticed, now that you’ve reached the last page and corner of the newsletter, St. Paul’s Heartbeat has undergone a major facelift this issue. Keeping with our “green school” philosophy, Heartbeat is no longer printed in a hardcopy format. The work is all created and delivered digitally and will continue to evolve with the medium, where future issues may be delivered via the web, become more interactive and, dare we say it, iPad ready. We hope you enjoy the improved look and “magazine-esque” feel. Thanks for reading.
