Veteran’s Day— No school on Wednesday,
November 11th
Math
We finished up module 3, where students learned how
to tell time in many different formats, as well as how to
find elapsed time. I would encourage you to make this
part of your conversations when you’re in the car or
around the house. For example, if you have to be
somewhere at 6:30, ask them how many more minutes
before they need to be there. You could also give them
a start time and finish time for any activity (play time,
dinner, TV time, etc.) and ask them how long they spent
on the activity. The more they practice, the more
confident they’ll become! 
We are now in module 4 which primarily deals with four
digit numbers—writing them as a numeral, in words,
comparing them, etc. as well as fractions.
Please encourage your child to practice their math facts
on Xtra Math or by using their flash cards (each
student should have a set in their green folders) at home
each night if they have a few minutes to spare. We have
started graphing their results so the students are
excited about improving!

Literacy
Reading— We are continuing to study non-fiction texts
and are looking at how the author structures the text to
help us understand it more easily. So far we have
learned 4 text structures: descriptive, chronological,
compare and contrast, and cause and effect. Next
week we will continue to review these as well as learn
about our last one, which is problem and solution.
Students are learning to identify signal words that clue
them in as far as what structure the author is using. See
if your child can tell you what each of the 4 structures
looks like in a text.
Writing— using sensory details and strong leads as we
write personal narratives
Science
This week we continued learning about how the sun is a
star that appears to be the largest, because of its
closeness to earth. We learned that there are actually
much bigger stars. We’ve also begun talking about the
importance of the sun and why it is necessary for our
survival.
TAG
This past week students were able to share with their 3 rd
grade classmates all the hard work they’ve been doing
during TAG by presenting their work in the form of
reader’s theaters, power point presentations, or book
reports. Starting on Monday, students will rotate to a
new classroom for TAG.
Thank you to Mrs. Coyle, Mrs. Bowen, Mrs.
Kim & Mrs. Mack for making the Halloween
party so much fun for the kids last Friday!
