Youth Faith Ambassadors to
prepare and present a Monthly
Virtues Assembly that is comprised
of prayer, petitions, skits, songs,
and S & L Virtues in Action DVD
vignettes that promotes and
reflects the application of Christian
virtues in the lives of school
children.
Description of the monthly virtue,
prayer and reflection on virtues to
be included in the monthly
newsletter.
Daily PA announcements to align
the liturgical season and/or daily
scripture reading with the virtue of

By the end of 2011, Pauline Vanier
students will be familiar with the ten
virtues (celebrated one per month),
and will know how these virtues are
demonstrated in everyday life.

Pauline Vanier community has
honoured its commitment to focus
on one virtue a month through
prayer, reflection, lessons in the
classroom, announcements over the
PA, information in the newsletter, a
monthly Virtue Assemblies
coordinated by the Youth Faith
Ambassadors, and commitment to
social outreach such as Cram-theCruiser, Share Life, The Chalice,
Terry Fox and Jump Rope for Heart.
Looking Ahead
Increased emphasis will be placed
on the Catholic dimension of virtue
as distinct from secular character
development i.e. to explore the
role of grace, prayer, free will and
conscience in cultivating virtue.
A focus on authentic student voice

and students will have a shared
vision of what constitutes school
safety to be coordinated by the
CCCCAT (Safe School Action Team);
and will be aware of strategies to
recognize and respond appropriately
to
bullying
behaviours
and
inappropriate
actions
and/or
attitudes that potentially undermine
a Christian culture of respect and
care.

Student sub-committee of the
CCCAT committee to be formed to
address bullying issues.
Students to brainstorm areas of
concern re: bullying prevention and

Taking Stock
The CCCAT committee met four
times this year and included broad
representation from Grade 3-8. The
committee reviewed the many
efforts currently in place to promote
a safe and caring school and mapped
out plans for the future.
The student sub-committee of
CCCAT wrote and presented two
bullying prevention skits schoolwide.
Education and training re: bullying
prevention was provided for all
students Grades 1-8 from B.R.A.V.E.,
police visits/presentations, PA
announcements, classroom lessons.
Looking Ahead
School will highlight “pink day” in
2011-2012.
Teachers will review and rehearse
the B.R.A.V.E. Steps frequently.

develop a school nutrition and
healthy lifestyle policy to promote
healthy food choices, exercise and
healthy lifestyle options for all
members of the community.

Two staff members and two School
Council members shall attend
workshops/seminars provided by
the board about the Food and
Beverage Policy.
Students will participate in a
Healthy Snack taste test panel. A
Variety of healthy snacks to be
offered for sale every Friday.

Taking Stock
Two staff members and two School
Council members received training
on the new Food and Beverage
Policy.
The Healthy Snack taste testing
panel was introduced. This event
promoted student engagement, and
community interest in healthy food
choices.
The Friday Tuck Shop was
successfully undertaken by students
in the SERC class and served the
dual purpose of service to the
community and an excellent activity
for teaching organizational skills,
data management, banking
(handling money), promotion
(posters/PA announcements), and
nutrition awareness for students.
The school determined that the
Pizza vendor is compliant.
Nutri-lunch and Bagel Days were
piloted and became quite popular.
Other options will be explored next
year to add variety to the offerings.
Parents, students and staff have
tried the ministry cookbook. The
recipes were a hit!
Parents were very co-operative in
substituting food treats with other
favours.
1st Year Goal C cont’d:
Breakfast Club to continue on a
“sign-up” rather than “drop-in”
basis; recess snacks will be available
to Breakfast Club members in the
morning at Breakfast Club.

50 students signed up for Breakfast
Club with an average of 25 patrons
per day.
More than a dozen staff and parents
volunteered to help with the
Breakfast Club which is a huge
increase over last year.
The Breakfast Club menu has
expanded considerably with a focus
on variety and nutrition.

Increased funding provided for next
year will facilitate an “apple a day”
nutrition cart travelling from class to
class (several days a week).
Peel Health Nurse is committed to
working with Pauline Vanier to
develop a “Health and Wellness
Day” with a nutrition focus.

options will continue to be explored.
Literacy
By June 2013, student performance
in Dufferin-Peel will increase by 5%

Assignment Teacher, funding from
School Council, and on-going
financial support from the SO, the
school will attempt to:
a) Take an inventory of
independent reading and
levelled reading materials in
both the literacy room and the
classrooms.
b) Order appropriate levelled
texts and boy-friendly
literature for primary
classrooms.
c) Establish guided reading across
the primary division several
days a week
d) Set up independent reading
bins for each child in his/her
classroom
e) Promote accountable talk
With the support of the Primary Literacy
Stream team, Program Department and
the Ministry representative the goal is
to successfully complete 2 TLC at the
Primary K-3 level with these foci:
a) Main idea
b) Point of View
At divisional meetings the goal is to
analyze data including EQAO and PM
Benchmarks; and discuss how the data
should inform instruction.

Pauline Vanier School successfully
completed an inventory of literacy
materials and implementing the 20
day introduction to an independent
reading program at the Primary
Level.
School Council has been very
generous in supporting the
acquisition of literacy materials.
Each student was given an
independent reading box to house
their guided reading materials, just
right texts and high interest books,
along with a student reading log and
a guided reading teacher log.
Guided reading was successfully
implemented at the Primary level.
