NEWSLETTER #10
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
As we approach the Feast of
Pentecost and enter the ‘home
stretch’ of the 2010-2011 school
year, we reflect upon the many
accomplishments, challenges and
memory-making events of the
past ten months. As a community of faith, we
have worked diligently to become better learners
and better people. We have shared our gifts and
talents and benefitted from the unique gifts of
others. We have sought to make a difference in
our school, our neighbourhood and around the
world.
At the completion of my first year as Principal at
Pauline Vanier, I offer my heartfelt thanks for
the generosity, kindness and support I have
received from all corners of the school
community.
I wish to acknowledge and thank our partners,
including our Superintendent, Liz Kazimowicz,
our trustee, Anna DaSilva, and our pastor,
Father Jan Kodolowsky who have guided and
supported us in our efforts to provide a quality
Catholic education to all students.
My sincere appreciation is extended to our
outstanding School Council, whose members
have worked diligently, in collaboration with our
school team, to support a myriad of activities
and programs for our children. Thank you, also,

to our tireless volunteers who help out with field
trips, fundraisers, the Breakfast Club, and
classroom programs.
At the heart of any outstanding school is a staff
team that comes to school each day passionate
about their vocation and eager to support the
learning of students. Thanks to all of you!
The untiring devotion of our administrative
assistant, Mrs. Mijandrusic, our volunteer
secretary, Mrs. Gomes, our head custodian,
Mike Lima, our evening custodians, Rudy
DeSouza and Frances Musoke help us to create a
safe, caring, inclusive and healthy school
community where students truly flourish.
We cannot forget to thank our students. It is
their boundless energy, curiosity, and optimism
that motivate the adults in the building to rise to
meet the daily challenges of the busy demands
of our vibrant school community.
May I take this opportunity to wish you, and
your family, God’s blessings for a well-deserved
summer vacation. I welcome the opportunity to
work with you again this Fall, as we continue to
realize our vision of creating a Catholic
community rooted in the Vanier tradition of
Christian service to others. I look forward to
seeing you all in the Fall. Enjoy your summer
with family and friends!

This month we celebrate the virtue of
Fairness.
When we spend a lot of time immersed in TV,
movies, magazines and radio, we can sometimes
forget that life is not a competition. We are
made by God to live together, to share and to
help each other. You can’t be a Christian alone.
Christianity is all about living together in
community—ideally, one big happy family.

When the urge to be superior takes over a
person’s life, then fairness can go out the
window. Fairness, the belief that everyone
deserves an opportunity to succeed, is not
always about making things equal. Some people
need a bit more time, space, money and support
to have an equal chance to succeed. And they
deserve that chance.
Jesus spent a major part of his time on earth
showing us about the preferential option for the
poor and weak. He demonstrated that the sick,
the lame, the blind, the bad sinners all need a
fair chance to succeed—to overcome their
disadvantages and disabilities in order to
succeed.
In today’s terms, these gospel values could be
called good sportsmanship. A good sport makes
sure the rules of the game give everyone an even
chance to participate. Not everyone has to win.
Everyone deserves a chance to be in the game.
A Fair Person…
• Gives special consideration to those who
need extra support
• Treats others as they would like to be
treated
• Thinks “W.W.J. D.” when faced with
moral choices
• Listens to all sides before forming opinions
• Shows good sportsmanship at all times
The Rosary Club ended with
the students in the club leading
a decade of the Rosary for
Mother Mary during our
wonderful Crowning of Mary
Celebration. The students have been praying the
rosary once a week during their lunch recess.
They have also watched a movie and read stories
about Mother Mary. The Legion of Mary from
St. Jerome’s Parish and St. Mary’s Parish came
to help the students make their own rosaries
which have not been blessed yet. If you wish to
have them blessed, please take them to your
church.
Crowning of Mary
Thank you to Ms. Tac, Ms. Tersigni, Mr. Gredi
and their students for preparing a beautiful
Crowning of Mary Liturgy celebrated on Friday
May 27th. The Rosary Club prayed a decade of
the Rosary, the First Communicants brought
fresh flowers to Our Lady, and the choir and
Mrs. Muzzatti sang Marian hymns of praise.
It was a beautiful liturgy and enjoyed by all!
First Communion
Congratulations go out to many of
our Grade 2 students who received the Sacrament of Holy
Communion at the 5:00 p.m.
Mass at St. Jerome Parish on May
21, 2010. Thanks to Mrs. Stott
and Mrs. Passarelli for their devotion to working with their students to prepare
them to receive the Sacrament for the first time.
They can now receive the Holy Eucharist every
Sunday as we celebrate as a church community.
Sacrament of Confirmation
Students in Grade 8 from Pauline Vanier School
will receive the Sacraments
of Confirmation at 7:00 p.m.
on June 9th at St. Jerome
Parish. We are excited for
those young people who have
chosen to make an adult commitment of faith.
Thanks to Mr. Daniels and Mr. Connelly for
their witness of faith and catechesis for our
students. Congratulations to all!
Grade Eight Retreat
All Grade 8 students will participate in a retreat
in preparation for their transition to high school.
The retreat will be facilitated by our Principal,
Mrs. Bodsworth, and our religion consultant
Patricia Dal Ben. The music ministry will be
provided by Nancy Boss, the teacher/musician
who composed and recorded the Catholic
Education Week songs. All participants will
receive a small gift from School Council, as well
as lunch and transportation provided by the
school. The retreat, entitled, Stepping out in
Faith, will include topics such as self-esteem,
friendships, secular versus sacred, and knowing
what you believe.
Rosary Apostolate Coming Soon
Rosary Apostolate is a non-profit
association of volunteers in the
community that freely give of their
time and talents to help children develop a
deeper relationship with God through prayer.
The Rosary apostolate seeks to lead people to
Jesus through Mary and to bring about a
spiritual renewal in future generations through
the intercession of Mary and the power of the
Rosary.
The Apostolate wants to help young people to
feel that through their membership in the
Catholic Church they can experience a great
sense of belonging through a family of faith.
Each volunteer, under the direction and
guidelines of the Rosary Apostolate, teaches
students how to pray the Rosary and understand
the mysteries of the Rosary.
Pauline Vanier School will begin the Rosary
Apostolate Program in the fall. We need at least
6 adults who would be willing to volunteer one
half day a month to come into the school and
assist with the program of teaching children how
to pray the Rosary. The Rosary Apostolate will
provide training and all necessary materials for
the volunteers.
If you are willing to assist with The Rosary
Apostolate by contributing one half-day per
month, please contact the school office with
your name, phone number and preferred day of
the work. The day of the Rosary Apostolate at
Pauline Vanier will likely be a Tuesday or
Thursday. The program will run from October
through to May. Please enroll now as a volunteer
for the Fall.
End of the Year Mass
Please join the Pauline Vanier School
Community as we celebrate our End-of-the-Year
Mass on Wednesday June 22, 2011 @ 9:00 a.m.
with Father Jan from St. Jerome’s Parish. This
is an opportunity to gather together to give
thanks for all of God’s blessings throughout the
school year. We look forward to seeing many of
our parents join us as we come together to
celebrate the Eucharist. Thank you to Father Jan
and the many teachers and students who have
prepared our liturgical celebrations this past
year.

Sacraments. The program for children entering
Grades 1-6, runs Monday to Friday from July
18-22nd (9am-3 pm); cost is $40 for the week.

Speak Up: This year
several Pauline Vanier students took the
initiative and participated in Speak Up; a
program that gives students a chance to get involved in making their school a better place to
learn. These three Speak Up projects were approved by the Ministry and implemented by
three groups of Grade 7 and 8 students:
1. The Performing Arts Club ran every Thursday. This project was organized by Cassandra,
Shanika, Shantel, Star, Eliza, and Dana in grade
8, and supervised by Miss Tersigni. The goal of
this project was to help students in grades 3 to 7
gain confidence, meet new friends, work cooperatively in a group, all while learning new dancing or singing skills. They sang and practiced
choreographed routines to popular songs.
2. The Sports Club ran every Wednesday. It was
organized by Tosan, Tiana, Christian, Matthew,
and Shania in Grade 7, and supervised by Mrs.
Mayer. The goal of this program was to teach
students in Grades 1 to 3 about teamwork and
true sportsmanship. They also learned and practiced various basketball and volleyball skills,
and were taught the basic rules of the games.
you goes out to all of our Youth Faith Ambassadors: Raven, Ashley-May, Karolina, Maeve,
Cierra, Zareen, Adwoa, Nicole, Lily, Samantha,
Noah, Star, Eliza, Toson, Kiara, Silvio, Hugo,
Joseph and Julia. You have all done a marvelous
job! Thank you for your time, dedication, hard
work and virtuous hearts.
The Glee Club
3. The Tutoring Club ran every Tuesday and
Thursday. It was organized by Sarah, Alexis,
and Mikaela in Grade 7, and supervised by Mrs.
Vigneault. The goal of this program was to help
students in Grades 1 to 3 reach their full potential in their academic studies. Primary students
were given the opportunity to receive one-onone help with their schoolwork, and were also
able to catch up on their homework in Mathematics or Language Arts.
All of our Speak Up projects were a great success this year! The thoughtful projects organized
by these Grade 7 and 8 students demonstrated
strong student innovation and truly benefited the
many students who participated. A big thank
you to these students for their dedication and
hard work! We look forward to implementing
more Speak Up projects at Pauline Vanier next
year!
Pauline Vanier's Glee Club has been working
hard all year, learning various songs and dance
routines to a wide variety of music. The junior
students have had an outstanding opportunity
to join a club that is fun and exciting, opening up doors to learning different styles of music
and dance. On Friday June 24th, the Glee Club
will have the opportunity to perform for their
fellow students. They have been working very
hard on four numbers and are excited to perform
and demonstrate their outstanding talent! Family
and friends are invited to join us on Friday June
24th, 12:30 p.m. in the gym to have the pleasure
of seeing our very talented Glee Club perform
for our school. A special thank you goes out to
all of our dedicated students in the Glee Club:
Kiara, Alexis, Katrina, Leah, Patricia, Keilaye,
Daniella, Quinton, Omatayo, Tamara, Melody,
Annika, Melanie, Angelene, Nicole, Mithuza,
Adriana, Olivia, Julia, Cindy, and Marco. Great
work Pauline Vanier Glee Club!
Youth Faith Ambassadors
The Youth Faith Ambassadors have worked
very hard all year to create a safe, caring and
inclusive school community here at Pauline. Our
monthly virtue assemblies allowed students to
become more deeply rooted in our Catholic
Christian tradition. The Youth Faith Ambassadors were able to demonstrate the significance of
the monthly virtues through dramatic performances, movement, cheers and prayer. Our
Youth Faith Ambassadors also organized several
school wide acts of charity such as food drives,
organizing and delivering Christmas shoeboxes
to Dr. Simone, raising money to buy a goat for a
family in a developing country and now collecting pop can tabs to purchase a wheelchair. Our
goal here at Pauline Vanier is to create a more
virtuous Catholic School and the Youth Faith
Ambassadors have done an outstanding job
modeling the monthly virtues. A special thank
The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club has been a huge success this
year. It is good to know that students are
starting their day off on a bright note with
nutritious food and healthy conversation. The
Breakfast Club would not be possible without
the help of our parent and teacher volunteers. If
any parents can be here for 8:00 a.m. next year
to volunteer with the breakfast club it will lessen
the load for others. Please contact the school
office and leave your name, phone number and
preferred mornings to volunteer.
Sports at Pauline Vanier
In 2010/2011, Pauline Vanier’s teams had a
great year. Like every year our students and
teachers exemplified enthusiasm and commitment. As Athletic Rep, Mr. Monachino thanks
the students and teachers for their hard work and
dedication.
The following is a list of
team/teachers and their accomplishments:
- Girls Intermediate Volleyball placed 3rd in the
family finals coached by Miss. Tersigni
- Intermediate Basketball Free Throw Challenge
coached by Miss. Tersigni
- Junior Boys Volleyball placed 2nd in the family finals coached by Mr. Pavic
- Intermediate Girls Basketball placed 2nd in the
family finals coached by Mr. Pavic
- Junior Girls Basketball coached by Mr. Pavic
- Girls Soccer coached by Miss. Tac and
Miss. Tersigni
- Intermediate Boys Basketball coached by Mr.
Connelly and Mr. Daniels
- Boys Flag Football coached by Mr. Connelly
The Intermediate Girls' Volleyball team,
coached by Mr. Daniels, played their season in
the Fall. Although their record was 1 and 3 for
the season, they played all opponents very
competitively. All matches that they lost were
pushed to a final tiebreak game. Well done,
girls!
The Intermediate Boys' Basketball team
had a very successful season. After losing their
first pool-play game by a few points to St.
Veronica, they went on to win their next three
games against St. Gregory, St. Julia and St.
Barbara, advancing them to the Family
tournament. At the Family tournament they
were able to advance to the semi-finals where
they pushed a much bigger St. Kevin's team
throughout the entire game only to lose by a
few points. Congratulations boys!
Go Girls Highlights
Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds!
Twelve lucky girls took part in an exciting
mentoring program being offered through Big

Samantha T, Betelehem G., Liliana H., Adwoa
A., Sarah C., Nicole P, Shantel A. Tiana D. and
Felicia G. participated.
The girls were thrilled with the information
and support provided to them in order to make
informed choices about active living, balanced
eating and feeling good. They were paired with
two female volunteer mentors, aged 18-25.
The program consisted of seven 2-hour
sessions held on Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to
1:00 p.m. the girls really enjoyed the fun,
educational games and activities that
encouraged mentor/participant relationshipbuilding.
The self-reflection and group
discussions about was important to them were
enjoyed by all, especially during what is
typically a challenging stage of personal
development.
This program has been fantastic! We are so
proud of all the girls who participated and hope
these young women will incorporate the values
learned into their lives.

Congratulations to
Award Winning Poet:
Shanisha's Wijeratne
Pauline Vanier Grade 8
The Book That's Never Read
It's like a book that' never read;
a speech that's never said;
or a rumour that's never spread.
My troubled mind stays
where it's supposed to be.
The only thing I want,
is for you to comfort me.
But would you really listen
if I told you what's on my mind?
Or would it just be noise to you;
like it's a waste of your time.
What would you say
if I told you what I was going
through?
I bet you would just laugh
and be glad;
it never happened to you.
I guess I can't blame you.
No one said that you had to care
I just needed somebody
to be there.
Without you,
I'll just be the book
that's never read;
the speech that's never said;
or the rumour that's never spread.
Bicycle season is upon us now
that the warmer weather has
arrived.
We remind all our
students of the importance of
following traffic safety rules and
of the legal requirement to wear a certified
safety helmet. Bicycles must be walked on any
school grounds, chained and locked at the side
of the school property. Scooters, skateboards,
wheelies and roller blades are not permitted on
school property; therefore, students are
reminded not to bring these items to school.
Safe Play at Pauline Vanier It is our goal
that all our students are safe and have an
enjoyable recess break. To this end, students
have access to four squares, alphabet square,
and several other pavement activities, in
addition to soccer fields and basketball courts.
Some of our school yard rules include: Keeping
your hands and feet to yourself, using your
words not your fists to solve problems, and if a
problem persists, reporting to the adult on duty.
If your child is bringing a ball to school, please
ensure that the material is a soft, spongy type
found at most retailers. We encourage our
students to be mindful of the space where they
are playing, watching carefully before running
or throwing balls to avoid injuring others. Also,
our students are reminded daily to be respectful
towards others. This means no teasing, bad
language or put-downs.
We ask parents to continue to review these rules
right up until the last day of school. Particularly
during this month of FAIRNESS, we remind
our students to resolve conflicts in peaceful
ways with the help of a supervising teacher or
their own classroom teacher.
Warm Weather Dress Code
& Sun Protection
With warm weather arriving, it is important to
review the dress code and appropriate dress for
the school day. At all times clothing should be
comfortable, modest and appropriate for a
Catholic school environment.
In keeping with board policy, our school is
committed to standards of neatness, cleanliness,
modesty and good taste. Students are expected
to dress in a manner and attire suitable for the
occasion and appropriate to the school
environment. Clothing should not detract the
attention of others away from the learning
process.
Here are a few common-sense guidelines for
appropriate school attire:
 Clothing should be neat, clean and without
tears and/or holes.
 Skirts must reach the bottom of the student’s fingertips when hands are relaxed at
their side.
 Shorts must be modest and tasteful. Shortshorts, cut-offs, spandex bicycle wear, and
low-riding shorts are not permitted.
 Muscle shirts, tank tops, halter tops, tube
tops, spaghetti strap tops or tops that reveal
undergarments or a bare back or midriff
(even when they lift their arms) are not
permitted.
 Shirts with offensive, suggestive, violent or
rude slogans or symbols are not permitted.
 Shoes must be worn at all times for obvious
health and safety reasons. Sandals, flip
flops and open-toed shoes are ill-advised.
 Protective measures such as hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are strongly encouraged for protection against dangerous UV
rays.
 Heavy make-up and jewelry are not allowed.
 Students are reminded that hats, bandanas,
hoods, sunglasses or other head-gear must
be removed upon entering the school building.
 Bottles of water allowed in the classroom
only.
Students who come to school in
unacceptable attire may be asked to phone
their parents to arrange for a change of
clothing to be brought to the school.
Dangers of Storm Sewers
The City of Brampton warns that children
playing in and around storm sewers and
watercourses, entering storm sewers through the
outfalls, and entering storm sewers through
access covers is dangerous and can lead to a
fatality. Please make sure that your children are
aware that:
• Water flows in storm sewers and watercourses are unpredictable and may
change quickly;
• Toxic gases may be present;
• Tragic falls could take place; and
• Access is restricted and therefore, rescue
attempts are difficult.
Crossing Guard Appreciation Day
This year Brampton City Council
proclaimed June 14th as Crossing
Guard Appreciation Day.
All
students at Pauline Vanier School are
encouraged to wish the Crossing Guard a “good
day” and to thank him/her for unfailing service
to the community.

September 2011, please let us
know as soon as possible to assist with planning
so that we may provide a transfer form for your
child. If you are changing addresses within our
boundaries please let us know your new address,
as well as any changes to employment or child
care arrangements.
In the event of an
emergency we need up-to-date records to be able
to contact you.
Flex Boundary
Parents who have requested flex boundary
admittance for their children will be considered
annually, taking into consideration the number
of students enrolling at the school. Each year,
students attending under the Flexible Boundary
Policy are required to submit an annual Flex
Boundary request. Please submit this letter of
request as soon as possible for 2011-2012, if you
have not already done so.
Back-to-School Training Camp
A committee of enthusiastic teachers will be
working on the development of a back-to-school
training camp to ensure a consistent approach to
school routines and rules in the Fall term.
Parents will be asked to assist the school by
reinforcing habits of respectful conversations, a
positive attitude, taking responsibility for ones
actions, telling the truth, and putting one’s best
effort into every task and activity.
School Agenda Planners
For the 2011-2012 school year, students in
Grades 1-8 will be encouraged to purchase a
Premier School Agenda. The agendas will be
available early in September. The agenda serves
as a day planner to facilitate organizational
skills, effective time management, and
homework completion. The agenda also serves
as an important tool in communicating between

Courtesy Rider Policy
Every year we get many calls from parents
whose child is not entitled to bussing but
who want permission to ride the bus by
accessing the Courtesy Rider Policy. In
accordance with Board Policy, we will not
be giving permission for students who are
not eligible to ride the bus until October.
Such requests must be put in writing, dated
and addressed to the principal. Ages, grades
and names of students must be listed, along
with a rationale explaining why bussing is
being requested. If new students register
later in the year (who are eligible for
bussing) and the bus is already loaded to
capacity, students who are riding as
Courtesy Riders may be removed from the
bus.

PARENT’S CORNER
Summertime is learning time! Suggest fun
activities while school’s out, and send your child
back in the fall ready to learn. Try these ideas:
Did You Know?
“FULL” is the only “full” word that ends in a
double L. All other “full” words end with one
L. For example: wonderful, grateful, thankful,
spoonful.
Primary:
Look through the newspaper with your child and
cut out headline words. Clap out each syllable,
e. g., pic-nic = 2 syllables. Arrange them into
lists of 2, 3, 4 or more syllables. Is there any
other way to arrange (sort) these words? (e.g., by
first letter, by last letter, by number of words...)
Junior:
Word Stairs- Play a word stair game with your
child. Choose a word. Players must use the last
letter of the previous word to start the next word.
You can use graph paper to organize this activity
and specify the number of letters each player can
use. For example, a word stair using four letter
words might look like this:
P L A Y
E
A
R E S T
R
E
E
Lemonade anyone?
Your youngster can practice math
skills and learn about running a
business by opening a lemonade
stand. Help him/her get supplies
and figure the cost for a cup (the
cost per batch divided by the number of
servings). Then, he/she can set his price.
Making the lemonade will teach him about
measurement, and he/she’ll practice addition and
subtraction as he charges customers and gives
change. Idea: To boost sales, have him/her
make blue lemonade (add frozen blueberries to
his recipe or mix).
My reading space
A cozy spot can make reading special for your
child—and motivate him/her to read more. Put
pillows, a blanket, and a basket of books in a
corner of his/her room or in a tent in the family
room. You might have him/her add a sign:
“Mark’s Reading Corner.” Visit the library
weekly so he/she can restock his basket. Tip:
Suggest that he/she choose a variety, including
stories, nonfiction, magazines and poetry.
Creative board games
Encourage creative thinking by
having your youngster invent
new board games. He/she might
start by designing a game that combines two
existing games. For example, he/she could draw
a game board that uses Clue characters (Colonel
Mustard, Mrs. Peacock) and Candy Land cards
(gumdrop, lollipop). Players try to figure out
who ate which candy. Have him/her write out
instructions, and then play as a family.
Challenge: See if he/she can come up with a
new game each week.
Playing Safely
When your youngster plays outside, help
him/her keep safety in mind with these tips:
•
He/she should wear a helmet, knee pads,
and elbow pads when skating or using a
scooter. He/she always needs a helmet for
bike riding, too. Don’t allow him/her to
wear headphones, since music will drown
out traffic noises.
•
Remind your child to go down slides feet
first and to avoid walking close to moving
swings. Also, he/she shouldn’t wear necklaces or drawstrings on the play ground –
they can get caught on equipment.
•
Fill bottles with ice water before going out,
and have our youngster drink frequently.
He/she needs about 5 ounces every 20 minutes when playing in hot weather.
Blessing for Summer Vacation
Let us put ourselves in the hands
of the Lord,
And pray that God will bless us
and our families during the
wonderful months of summer.
May we all help to make our
homes places of relaxation, joy,
love, peace and safety.
May we be generous and
considerate,
Not thinking only about
ourselves,
But helping others to enjoy
the blessing of summertime.
Keep each of us in your care
during the coming summer, and
throughout our lives.
Amen
