Well the Winter that did not really happen is over and Semester 2 is in full swing and many spring sports and
activities have started up again.
We are in the midst of our most Joyous time of year – the Easter Season. The Lenten period began with the Ash
Wednesday liturgy. Each week following Ash Wednesday, every grade celebrated a Lenten Mass. Led by Mr.
Smalridge and the Chaplaincy team, and celebrated by Father John Facey, Pastor of St. Patrick’s, the masses
captured the essence of why and how Catholic education makes a difference in the lives of our youth.
Now we are in the Easter Season. With this season comes the Spring concert, followed by the annual Music trip,
art exhibits, spring sports and many other activities.
Catholic Education Week, beginning on May 6, is an opportunity to bring attention to the value of Catholic Education in Ontario.
J. B. Kostoff, the Director of Education of Dufferin-Peel, is a strong advocate for Catholic Education. Please access the DufferinPeel web site at http://www.dpcdsb.org/cec and visit the Catholic Education Week web page. For nearly 170 years Catholic
school boards have provided educational excellence, in a school culture imbued with the Gospel values of Jesus Christ. Catholic
education has been the foundation for millions of students to develop their full spiritual, academic, physical and social potential.
This year we are combining our Earth Week projects with Catholic Education Week. Beginning on April 23, our Green Team, and
Mr. Smalridge, the school Chaplain, will focus on Stewardship as a theme.
This newsletter summary follows your child’s mid-term report card. The full newsletter is available online at http://
www.dpcdsb.org/pocok. We invite you to take the opportunity to review your son or daughter’s progress and engage in a dialogue
intent on continuous improvement. The fundamental first step to academic success is regular and punctual attendance followed by
consistent completion of homework and review.
The parent School Council has been very active. They hold monthly
meetings on the fourth Wednesday of almost every month. Please try
to attend one of their meetings. The School Council has completed
and published the “Pirate Cookbook” — a collection of favourite recipes donated by staff, students and parents. The cookbook is available
in the Main Office for $10. It will make an excellent anytime gift, but
an especially wonderful Mother’s Day gift. The funds raised will be
added to other school council funds and used to defray the cost of improving the sound system in the cafetorium.

An integral part of Catholic Education is the ability to grow both academically and spiritually. On March 22nd, 2012, students in Mr. Policelli’s grade 12 Theology class, along with Mademoiselle Palinic and Madame Donahue, had the opportunity of putting their Catholic spirit into action. Students spent the day lending their hands and their hearts to those in need at the Good Shep‐
herd Center in Toronto, where they took on the task of making approximately 80 beds which would be occupied that same evening. Students were so determined to get involved in helping those at the center, that once they had finished making the beds, students moved on to other tasks such as making sandwiches, peeling potatoes in the kitchen, unloading and unpacking the donation truck and folding fresh laundry. The staff at the center were so pleased with the students’ thriving spirit and desire to make an impact on the community, that they welcomed Pocock to come back and help out in the future. At the end of the day, students left the center expressing their happiness in having contributed their time and efforts; proving that once Pocock students put their faith and spirit to a task, nothing can stop them. The following students represented Pocock at the University of Guelph’s Business Competition: Samuel Lee, Alessandra Bun‐
dang, Nikita Lobo, Carissa Fernandes, Marina Abraham, Renita Vallomtharayil, Neziah Abraham, Christopher Luxton, Neziah Abraham, Christopher Luxton, Claudia Nagorski, Andrya Disic, Jakub Cholko, and Xhenis Erequi. Students competed in both the Financial Management and Marketing Management Categories. The Marketing Team placed FIRST, bringing home a $400 cheque to be used here at Philip Pocock to further develop any one of our SHSM programs. Congratulations Teams!!! A job well done!!! On Tuesday, March 27th, ESL students from Mrs. Bruno’s class were able to familiarize them‐
selves with the Mississauga community with a field trip to the Mississauga Central Library and the YMCA. This was a great opportunity for these newcomers to learn about services and resources in their neighbourhood. A special thank you to Mrs. Carola, our settlement worker, for organizing this trip. On Saturday, February 11th, French Club members had the rare opportunity to see Marcel Dubé’s theatrical production of Zone in its original language – French. Members made their way to the Théâtre français de Toronto for this exciting excursion and afterward, shared their ideas about the themes and structure of the play at a small café in the nearby Distillery District. Despite being one of the coldest days of the winter, students enjoyed themselves and were able to practise their French language skills. Un grand “merci” to Mme Bruno for organizing this event. On Thursday and Friday, April 12th and 13th, 5 of our students represented Philip Pocock at the annual « Concours d’art oratoire »,the French Public Speaking competition held at the Dufferin‐Peel Catholic District School Board CEC. We would like to congratulate all of our participants as all 5 participants placed this year! Nicole Maylor placed 3rd in the Senior Extended French category, Melissa Martins placed 2nd in the Junior Core French category, Caroline Frankfurter placed 2nd in the Junior Extended French Category, Plamédi Nimy placed 2nd in the Junior Français Plus category and Stephani Ponniah placed 1st in the Junior French Immersion category. Félicitations for their dedication, effort and hard work in preparing for this competition and representing our community so well. We would like to further congratulate Melissa, Caroline, Plamédi and Stephani, all of whom are now off the the Provincial Competition. Join us in wishing our young ladies and young man well as they compete at Glendon College (York University) on Saturday, May 12th. We would also like to recognize the support offered to our French Public Speaking Team by all of the French Teachers and Coaches, in particular Mademoiselle Palinic, Madame Bruno, Madame Iodice, Madame Donahue and Madame Polin‐De Luca. Regional Skills Competitions were held on March
27, 2011 at St. Augustine Secondary School in
Brampton. The following students represented the
Transportation Technology divisions.
Anthony Candelma participated in the Automotive
Service Technician competition. Aswell as a written
test and job interview, the competitions involved
seven different tasks that had to be completed throughout
the day. The tasks included replacing brakes, making a
brake line, diagnosing electronic and ignition systems of
an engine, identifying electronic system components,
identifying various vehicle components and precision
measurements of internal engine parts.
Taras Chved participated in the Small Engine competition. His competition included a written test, a job interview, and completely disassembling and reassembling a
small engine. He also had to take precision measurements and identify and
explain the purposes of some internal engine components before reassembly.
Both students had an exciting fun filled day. No doubt it was a learning day for them as they had to perform
at a high degree of intensity with the pressure of time limitations – it was a rare experience for these students to write a test, do a job interview and perform multiple tasks where they were marked by eight different judges within the time frame of 5 hours.
Way to go Anthony and Taras!!!
The Toronto Automotive Technology Competition is a
competition held annually at the International Auto
Show. It is sponsored by Centennial College, numerous vehicle manufacturers, and various tools and
equipment manufacturers/suppliers. Since its inception
13 years ago, it has always been dominated by schools
from the Toronto boards.
As Philip Pocock is in the process of starting the
Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) in Transportation
Technology, the SHSM committee is looking for ways
to build relationships with colleges in order to secure some experiential learning opportunities for the students. In doing this,
the committee stumbled upon the opportunity to participate in the high stake Toronto Automotive Technology Competition
sponsored by Centennial College. One of the highlights of the competition was the fact that the students had to attend eight
hours of training at Centennial College to prepare for the competition. The training at the college environment was a good experience for the participants. The students got a feel for the training methods and training equipments used at the college.
They also had an opportunity to tour several automotive shops at the college.

Anthony Candelma and Codie Noseworthy,
the students who represented Philip Pocock for
this event, were very excited and eager to participate. They commuted to Centennial College
in Scarborough two Saturday mornings for the
training sessions and spent a day at the competition at the Toronto Convention Centre in
downtown Toronto. They had a good time and
gained quite the experience at the competition.
At the end, though our school was not in the
winner’s column, everybody went home happy.
As well as the priceless training and experiences, Anthony and Codie were awarded hand
tools worth about $200.00 each and our school
got a Subaru engine for training purposes.

On Friday, March 30th, the Senior ESL students went on a full day excursion to the Maple Syrup Festival at Bronte Creek Provincial Park. The students enjoyed a guided tour of the Maple Lane where costumed interpreters dem‐
onstrated how to tap maple trees and make maple syrup and maple sugar. The students also went on a beautiful nature walk and tasted samples of maple sugar. A great day was had by all. Students are encouraged to use the ESL re‐
