Pocock Pride PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE What a difference a year makes. Last year it seemed like it snowed every second day. This year, we have yet to face a serious storm. virtually destroyed and the founder of the home was killed by the earthquake. Our community has decided to make the rebuilding of St. Joseph’s a long-term goal of our charitable giving, as we did with the orphanage in Sri Lanka after the Tsunami two years ago. We have just completed the most joyous time of year – the season of the birth of Our Lord. The school community celebrated in our usual fashion – Christmas concerts, carolling in the atrium, atrium stars, Christmas food baskets in conjunction with St. Vincent de Paul Society, a loonie drive for the Scott Mission, winter backpacks for the homeless, and Advent liturgies. This newsletter accompanies your child’s final report card for semester one. We invite you to take the opportunity to review your son or daughter’s progress and engage in a dialogue intent on continuous improvement. The fundamental first step to academic success is regular and punctual attendance, followed by consistent completion of homework and review. January has brought news of the terrible earthquake in Haiti. Our community has again responded with compassion and generosity. The Red and Blue civvies day generated over $2,000 in donations to assist with the rebuilding of St. Joseph’s Orphanage in Haiti. You may recall that last fall, we hosted a performance of the Haitian dancers. The dancers are all wards of St. Joseph’s Home for Boys. We have received news that the dancers are all safe; however, their home was WHO TO CONTACT Philip Pocock Catholic Secondary School 4555 Tomken Road, Mississauga, Ontario L4W 1J9 Telephone ................. 905-602-6172 http://w3.dpcdsb.org/POCOK Semester two always moves very quickly. It is punctuated with various breaks and holidays – Family Day in February, March Break, Easter in April, Victoria Day in May and then, suddenly, it will be June and the end of the school year looms. One of the blessings of a semestered system is a fresh start during the school year. The second semester brings new courses, different teachers, different students – an opportunity to refocus and renew all of our efforts to teach and learn. The Parent School Council has been very active and welcomes new members all the time. All parents are automatically part of the school council. They hold monthly meetings on the fourth Wednesday of almost every month. Please try to attend one of their meetings. Lastly, I encourage parents to subscribe to the PhilipPocockInfo email list. Please call the school and supply an email address where you can receive information from the school regarding news and events. Be sure to visit our Web page periodically – www.dpcdsb.org/POCOK (that’s not a typo – our name had to be shortened to five characters). At Philip Pocock this year, we are focusing on the theme of hope, finding new ways to help students and staff nourish the hope within them, and sharing that hope with a world in need. Hope for Peace On Remembrance Day, all of Pocock gathered in the gymnasium to reflect on the price our Canadian soldiers paid during the conflicts and peace-keeping missions of the last century. Major Bill Holiday addressed our students on the importance of supporting our members of the armed forces, and Captain Ian James, of the Royal Canadian Air Force, helped us understand the importance of remembering our veterans. We remember war, but we hope and pray for peace. The photo shows Captain James in front of his C130, prior to taking off for Afghanistan, wearing a Pocock cap. Jesus is our Hope: Advent and Christmas Advent is a time of waiting in joyful hope for the coming of our saviour, Jesus Christ. This past Advent season, our school celebrated 4 Masses, one for each grade level. With Father Facey leading us, we joined in song, prayer, and reflection on the true meaning of hope at Christmas. 2012: The End of Days? In response to the recent 2012 movie, the Chaplain visited several religion classes to discuss the Catholic perspective on the ‘last days’. Rather than being filled with fear and panic, Christians should look forward to the coming of God’s Kingdom at the end of time. Hope for Haiti—Pocock Finds Ways to Help Haiti! With the recent disaster in Haiti, Pocock students have proven themselves to be ‘ambassadors of hope’. Much of our Pocock community was touched and saddened by the devastation in Haiti. The daily reports and photos of the injured have touched us deeply and raised the consciousness of our Christian hearts. We have now been prompted into action and have embarked on a 2-year fundraising event similar to our previous Tsunami relief, aptly named " Change for Haiti". On January 19th we held our first event, a civvies day. All staff and students wore blue and red (the colours of the Haitianh flag) in a show of solidarity with the people of Haiti. The event raised more then $2,000 towards our mission in helping rebuild St. Joseph's Boys’ Home, which was totally demolished in the quake. Congratulations Pocock on our first event! Please stay tuned for further fundraising activities. Anyone interested in donating please contact the school or ext. 69172 to reach C.Pogson or Scott Smalridge on behalf of SAC, Chaplaincy, Romero Justice, and Student Wellness. What’s Coming Up? Future events include… —> ‘Let Go and Live Free in Lent’. —> Junior Chaplaincy Team for our Grade Nines —> Look out for the ‘ThinkFast’ —> Our Ash Wednesday Service The Philip Pocock School Council is designing a cookbook as part of a fundraising initiative for the purchase of a new school sound system. We hope to have the cookbook published and ready for sale before Christmas 2010. What a wonderful way to end the semester! The Grade 10/11 Italian class celebrated the culmination of this semester ’ s work with a ‘ Banchetto ’ . Students enjoyed Italian cuisine while listening to Italian music and reflecting on the language, the culture and the future… We were delighted to see several staff members grace our banquet; Mr. Tyndorf joined us briefly, as well as Mr. Johnson, Mr. Zammit, Ms. Selimovic, Mme. Ferrari, Mr. Wilson, and Ms. Milner, just to name a few. Students in Signora Polin-De Luca ’ s Italian class enjoyed a ‘ typical’ Italian Banquet with a 5 course meal that consisted of the following: antipasto ( prosciutto, bocconcini, pizza, olives, cheese, etc.) ; 2 pasta courses ( lasagna, gnocchi and penne in red sauces and 2 in white sauces; veal parmigiana, chicken cutlets, ‘ b raciole ’ , and meatballs, accompanied by several ‘ c ontorni ’ ; roasted peppers and zucchini, ‘ p urée di patate ’ , and salad. The meal ended with several desserts, including ‘ cannoli ’ and ‘ tiramisù ’ to name a few. Thank you to everyone, all the ‘ mamme ’ , ‘ papà ’ and ‘ n onne ’ for ensuring that our ’ Banchetto ’ was such a great success. Ci vediamo all ’ anno prossimo… Madame Polin -De Luca ’ s Grade 11 French class ’ culminating tasks ended with a ‘ B istrostyle ’ experience; the most amazing ‘ c rêpes ’ and ‘ café au lait ’ or ‘ c hocolat chaud ’ . Traffic in front of the school both on Tomken and on our driveway continues to be difficult, especially in the morning. The major concerns are the safety our students and traffic flow. There are a number of things that drivers can do to help with the traffic flow: School buses have priority access to the front of the school. The buses Mille merci et à la prochaine... deliver up 50 students at a time not just one or two. Let the buses through. Leave the front of the school clear. Be considerate of others. If you have to wait, pull into a parking space – backing in is better, then you don’t have to back out into the traffic when leaving. Be patient – creating grid lock and aggressive driving exacerbates the problem. Drop students off in the Tomken Arena parking lot and let them walk the rest of the way – a little exercise in the morning is a good thing. DO NOT park or stand in the drive through lane in front of the school. DO NOT make u-turns in the parking lot, this manoeuvre is unsafe and causes grid lock. DO NOT stop on Tomken Road to drop off or pickup students. (Police will be enforcing the existing bylaw) DO NOT block access for the special needs busses on the south side of the school. On December 3, 2009, Pocock hosted the Inspirations Arts Experience for students in the Communication Language and Planning for Independence Programs. Students from eight Mississauga Catholic Secondary Schools gathered to celebrate students’ talents and visual arts. The day also included a luncheon and social. The work displayed here is that of our very own Pocock artists. The Pirates‘ collage illustrated a variety of scenes throughout the school that depict life at Pocock and the Angel was used as the template for Pocock’s Christmas card. Thank you to all the helpers from Mme. Ferrari’s periods 1 and 2 Extended French classes and Link Crew members who shared in this wonderful experience and helped make this day a success! Curriculum: Enrolment numbers in the music department this year continue to be strong! To date we have close to 200 students assigned to instruments, an additional Guitar section and a very strong Vocal class! Three Christmas concerts put the Pocock community into the Christmas Spirit! Through band, vocal, drama and dance, our Arts students did an amazing job of sharing their talents with all! Thanks to all of the Pocock staff who made this event possible.. We have continued to promote music education by offering feeder school workshops for the fifth year in a row. Grade 8 students from 4 of our feeder elementary schools have come to Pocock and have participated in a great opportunity where students learned the basic elements of setup, playing and caring for various instruments. A special thanks goes out to the patient and dedicated music students who volunteered their time to make this huge endeavor possible, especially to the former St Sofia musicians who made a trip back to their feeder school to make a special presentation to the grade 8 students about our instrumental music program. Vocal: Our vocal program at Pocock continues to grow. We heard many wonderful singers at our Thanksgiving liturgies, Academic Awards Night, Remembrance Day services, Advent masses, and Christmas concert. We are very proud of our singers this semester. We even have some wonderful male voices that have joined us this year! We look forward to participating in Dufferin-Peel’s third Vocal Festival in Semester Two. This year saw our Junior Girls team made up entirely of new players—none having completed a previous year of high school basketball. The girls began their season by hosting our annual invitational tournament in September. As the team progressed through their thirteen games, they quickly learned lessons in teamwork, respect, and competition— along with the technical aspects of playing the sport. The highlight of the season was competing in the Huntsville tournament during a spectacular weekend in October. The Junior girls represented Pocock in an exemplary manner from the start of the season to the end. Team members are: Krista Ko, Gena Markous, Jackie Pearson, Kathrina San Pedro, Cassie Duffus, Melody Stepacher, Well done girls! Abby Ruiz, Nicole Patro, Vanessa Livermore, Alessandra Bundang and Katrina Garcia Coach Maddock As of this writing, the Junior Boys are poised to complete their league schedule and begin their playoff run. With a record of 15 wins and 9 losses, including one tournament gold medal, the squad has shown itself to be talented and is gaining experience steadily. With further development and determination, the Junior Pirates should be able to count this year a s a successful one. Team members are: David Garcia, Jonathan Cruz, Bogdan Chaban, Samuel Lee, Lawrence Tappin, Tyrell Holness, Redi Meto, Kevin Sarmiento, Jamil Miller, Yarko Bablak, Anthony Carfagnini, Peter Tran, Michael Gregorczyk, Michael Gibbs. Coach Maddock Although low in number, the Senior Football team showed a lot of heart, competing in ROPSSAA Tier 1 football. Their record may not have been the greatest, but the 26 young men on the Senior team competed hard every game. The undermanned crew fought off injuries and a schedule that saw them play 4 games in 15 days in one of the provinces toughest high school divisions. Most games, went down to the fourth quarter with the game within reach, but the undermanned crews determined effort saw them run out of gas. This was evident with a 14-0 lead at the annual “Friday Night Lights” game against the two-time champions St. Marcellinus. A fun time was had by all as 1000 students and family members came out for the double-header. Standout play this season came from Roman Marcyshyn, Ivan Biondic, Ahmed Elfecky, Javion Elson and Andrew Prosdocimi. Also having very impressive first-year Senior seasons were Steven Arbuthnot, Raymond Tomas, Kris Baily, Patrick Gruca and Mike Young. The Junior season proved to be a bright spot for the future of Pocock football as 45 boys suited up for the 2009 season, playing extremely well to bring the Pirates back into the playoffs. The Junior boys finished the season with an impressive 4-wins and 2-losses season, before dropping their quarter final match to the #1 seeded team in a close down-tothe-wire contest. Standout play this season came from Patryk Brzostek, Nick Wasylyk, Korey Wolkensperg and Dylan Quirt. Outstanding rookie play came from Steven Jarosz, Eric Holt, Chris Macut and Alex Grout. This year saw the team celebrate the season with its first ever player/parents football banquet. About 90 players and family attended the dinner and awards presentation as well as listened to a great speech from former Pocock athlete Garrett Sutherland, who earned a football scholarship to NCAA division 1 Northern Illinois University and a stint in the CFL. Award winners that night included: MVP Offence MVP Defence Block & Tackle Rookie of the Year Outstanding Special Teams Coaches Award JUNIOR Patrick Brzostek Kevin Kiezun Nick Wasylyk Steven Jarosz Johnny Cocomelo Korey Wolkensperg SENIOR Javion Elson Ahmed Elfecky Roman Marcyshyn Raymond Tomas Andy Prosdocimi Steven Arbuthnot Football is a sport that expects a lot of personal time and dedication. We practice everyday for 2 hours for up to 3 months. This year, Pocock Football continues to honour some of their athletes for their 4 or 5 years of service. 4 Star award winners were Roman Marcyshyn, Troy Black, Vlad Kostic, Andrew Prosdocimi, and Arthur Miskiewicz. This years 5 Star award recipient was Christian Renz. Mr. Sikic would like to thank his players and fellow coaches, Mr. Radic, Mr. Anisko, Mr. Michael Sesek, and Mr. Jim Soultanidis for all their time and energy this season. stories. This unit also helped students improve their literacy and computer skills. I hope to offer this unit again in semester two. Staff B. Dillon - Teacher-Librarian H. Roane - Library Technician D. Young - Library Secretary Hours Monday – Friday – 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. graphic courtesy of OSLA Program Time has flown by. I can’t believe we’re already half-way through the year! It’s been an incredibly busy semester. Mr. Mascarin’s grade 11 Biology students have finished their major research project, The Scientific Consumer, The students learned about the research process, about the various resources available to them, and about writing research essays, complete with appropriate citation of sources. They also learned how to use Smart Ideas (Ministry-licensed graphic organizer software). The research, done over a three-month period, was a semester project, while the essay itself was the culminating assignment for the course. Mr. Mascarin and I worked together to teach the necessary skills and assess student learning, and so we’re sharing the evaluation as well. This project was a major collaborative effort and is a good example of what can be accomplished when Teacher-Librarians and classroom teachers work together. Plans are already in progress for the semester two version! With Mr. Sikic’s cooperation, I was able to once again offer an historical fiction unit, A Novel Approach to History, which I developed for the grade 10 Canadian History (Applied) students. They researched historical topics and created posters using an online poster creation tool. This unit provided students an opportunity to develop an understanding of history as story and to realize that Canada does indeed have an interesting history, with a great many fascinating and compelling Mrs. Catapano, Miss Dollin, and I have been collaborating on the development of a library program for students in Pocock’s Communication Program. So far, the students have written and illustrated autobiographies. We’ll continue working through semester two. Our goal is to develop a School Library-based literacy and information studies program as an integral part of the Communication Program. And then, of course, there were all the classes booked in to the School Library for research projects, which kept me busy developing Pathfinders (which help the students find the resources and information they need). We’ll be offering the White Pine Award Reading Program again this year. Interested staff members “adopt” novels. Students discuss the books with these staff members, who will then sign their Reading Passports. Students who collect five signatures will be eligible to vote for his/her favourite book in April. Resources Students are encouraged to make use of the many databases and e-books to which they have access. Interested? Ask to see the Databases handout and check them out for yourself! School Library Online We’re online at http://www.dpcdsb.org/POCOK/School+Library/. Any website is always a work-in-progress, so check back often! In Closing… Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the School Library. Written by Brenda Dillon, Teacher-Librarian Visual Art students of Ms. McKay and Mrs. Seaman enjoyed a journey back to Ancient Egypt at the Art Gallery of Ontario. ‘The exhibition featured treasures from the famous tomb of King Tut and exquisite sculptures from tombs of many Pharaohs spanning 2000 years. Ms. McKay’s grade 10/11 Open classes have been learning different painting styles. They created landscape and animal images in watercolour, which focused on composition, mixing colours, and translucent washes of colour. They then worked in the style of abstract expressionism with a layering of wax resist, water colour washes and thick black glue. The images are bold and energetic. Their culminating project was a self portrait in pencil. February 12 ……Last Day for Semester 2 course changes February 17 …... Ash Wednesday February 24 …...
