CLASS PLACEMENTS
Class lists for the year 2011-2012 are extremely tentative. We have spent a great deal of time organizing the class lists to ensure the best possible placement for your child and will continue to fine tune them as the need arises. All our class placements will remain tentative until September enrollment is finalized. Due to a number of factors which impact enrolments, parents are reminded that combined classes are an increasing reality at Sts.
Martha and Mary.
Any concerns regarding class placements can be addressed in writing to the office and will be considered at the time of school re-organization Professional
Activity Day, September 16, 2011.
School closed to students.
FOND FAREWELLS
The last day for our students and staff is upon us. Mr. Carey and
Ms. Klein would like to take a moment to thank the wonderful staff of Sts.
Martha and Mary Catholic School for their support and dedication to our/your children this past year. It has been a very busy year, filled with many happy moments and success stories for your children. We all benefit from the gifts, uniqueness and talents of every person we meet in some way, shape or form. Unfortunately as the year comes to a close we must also prepare to say goodbye to staff who are leaving Sts. Martha and Mary
School including Ms. Addario and Ms. Di Cesare.
With sadness we bid farewell to these individuals who will leave us at the end of June. They have extended themselves greatly in their planning and marking in the classroom as well as involvement in a number of extra-curricular activities outside of the classroom.
With appreciation, we extend our gratitude to Vice-Principal Ms.
Klein for her leadership as co-administrator of our school as she will be transferring schools in September. Ms. Klein has contributed greatly to a vast number of areas, throughout her three years, in her role as educational, managerial and spiritual leader. Her most recent involvement in the facilitation of the jointly celebrated Catholic Education Week mass,
Welcome to Kindergarten festivities, curriculum initiatives, E.Q.A.O. facilitation, Volunteer Appreciation gathering and participation at both First
Communion and Confirmation sacramental masses and School Council meetings are only some examples of her dedication and commitment to the school. We trust that Ms. Klein will continue to foster leadership within the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board community at her new school.
We pray that all of our parting members, including Ms. Klein, Ms.
Addario and Ms. Di Cesare enjoy continued personal and professional success in all their endeavours. We feel blessed to have had this time to work with you.
TRANSPORTATION
It is time for the transportation department to get ready for next
September. Transportation eligibility is based on the student‟s grade level and their distance from the school. At Sts. Martha and Mary
School, only students eligible for bussing, based on Board guidelines, is able to take the bus.
As per Board policy, until routes are established, no consideration will be made for empty seat riders. Parents of children from JK – grade 8 who hope to access the school bus through the courtesy seat policy next year are reminded to find alternative transportation until the availability for additional riders has been determined.
Please note that the schedule for our bus will be posted on the front doors of the school the week before school starts.
ARE YOU MOVING?
If you will be moving from the Sts. Martha and Mary Catholic community over the summer, please notify the office. It is important that we are informed so that we can provide the necessary transfer forms. You will require these forms as part of your registration into any school in the province. Your child‟s

Parents are welcome to attend this celebration.
GRADUATION 2011
Congratulations to our GRADE 8 students on the occasion of their graduation from elementary school. This is a momentous accomplishment that marks the start of a new and exciting time in their lives, but also the ending of what we hope was a successful and joyful journey. We ask all members of our Sts. Martha and Mary Catholic community to say an extra prayer for our graduates this year.
Creator, please bless these graduates, and share with them Your wisdom and strength. Please lead them on the right path. Help them to remember that whatever they do, whether in word or deed, they must take action in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Amen.
We are privileged to have had the opportunity to educate these future leaders. Congratulations from the staff and students of Sts.
Martha and Mary Catholic
School .
ROSARY CLUB
Under the faithful leadership of Mrs. Godin,
Mrs. O‟Connell and our dedicated volunteer, Mrs. Hansford, we were fortunate to honour our Blessed Mother
Mary through prayer. Every Thursday from February until May, a large group of dedicated young students met to pray the rosary, offering prayerful intentions and honouring Mary.
Students also made rosaries and had them blessed by
Father D‟Sousa.

MILK BAG MATTRESS MOVEMENT
(submitted by: Mrs. Bellini-Kavals)
Thank you to all the students who have been faithfully bringing in milk bags throughout the year. We have now completed 7 mattresses and another 6 are still in progress. Many of our crocheters will continue working on mattresses over the summer. Our faithful cutters have spent 2 recesses each week all year cutting the bags into strips and rolling them into balls of plarn (plastic yarn). It has truly been a team effort, with students from grades 4 to 8 cutting and crocheting.
Thousands of milk bags have been diverted from going to landfill and have been turned into something useful for Haitians who still do not have dry place to sleep. Our students have learned a new skill, practised recycling, made some new friends and given the gift of time to help others in need. At this time we have enough milk bags to keep us busy over the summer. We hope to continue this project for the 2011-2012 school year. Thank you once again for your support.

INTERNET SAFETY
As stated earlier, we are asking that parents be aware of their children‟s use of the computer. As you know, many children are using FaceBook, Blogs and MSN. It is important that as parents, you are informed as to what your children are sending out and receiving. Some of the communications are very inappropriate and do not foster Christian relationships.
STUDENTS LEAVING FOR LUNCH
Please be advised that students require signed parental permission to leave the school during the lunch hour. Notes are to be given to the teacher, who will then send the students to the office to sign out.
Students will not be permitted to call home if a note is forgotten. Students are reminded that they must return to the school prior to the 1:00 p.m. bell. Many students leave the school to go to the homes of nearby friends or fast food restaurants. Please understand that these students and their friends are unsupervised at these times and are the responsibility of the parent.

These students promoted numerous food drives, faith activities, school dances, candy grams, and spirit days, which included our third successful “Vow of Silence”.
In recognition of their hard work and successful “Plant a Seed Campaign” to provide alternative income resources in Makeni, Sierra Leone, the Student Leader community was given the opportunity to bring guest speaker Scott Hammel to our school to speak with the students. Scott, a professional magician and
“daredevil”, is affiliated with “Me to We – Free the Children”, and enlightened and thanked our students for their enthusiasm and generosity.

We hope you will assist us in maintaining a sense of dignity with respect to the clothes that are worn to school.
FE
School textbooks and team uniforms are school property and are
“loaned” to students annually. The expectation is that these items will be returned at the end of the year. Please remind your child to “search” his or her room for any school items and return them as soon as possible. Again, students and/or parents may be held responsible for lost or damaged materials. Report cards will be withheld at the office until the return or restitution of loaned materials. Thank you for your help and cooperation in this regard.

VISITS FROM OUR GRADUATES
It has often been the practice of former
Sts. Martha and Mary students to stop by the school for a visit with siblings, friends or former teachers. Although we dearly love to see our graduates, it is often at a time of the day when staff and students are busy with school work.
Please assist us in reminding former students and our current graduating class members that we look forward to visiting with them, however, we must limit these visits to after 3:30 dismissal. We ask visitors to check-in at the office and receive a Visitor pass, and wait at the office until the respective member is able to meet them.
PLAY DAY & BBQ DAY
Grades 1 – 8 Play Day will take place on
Wednesday June 15, beginning in the morning until about 11:50. Thank you to
Ms. Addario, Mrs. Yawney and Ms.
Osmak for organizing the fun-filled activities. Please ensure that your child has a nutritious breakfast and snack so that he/she can fully participate in this active day. The majority of our games are planned for outdoors so children are reminded to dress for the weather and the activity by wearing running shoes, a hat and sunscreen. Some of the stations may involve water games; therefore a change of clothing is recommended. The afternoon will be spent indoors enjoying the company of friends while watching an age and theme appropriate movie.
As is the tradition at Sts. Martha and
Mary, our Catholic School Council will sponsor a hotdog lunch on Play Day.
Each student will receive a hotdog, a bottle of water and a freezie as part of this special day.
Our thanks and gratitude goes out to each volunteer and especially to Mr.
Christopoulos, Mr. Gonsalves and Mrs.
Brenzavich for their efforts on behalf of our students.
KINDERGARTEN PLAYDAY
Mrs. Boots and Mrs. Maxymiw‟s classes are busily preparing for the Kindergarten
Play Day which will take place on
Tuesday June 21, 2011.
LUNCH SUPERVISORS
Mrs. Totedo, Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Horich, Mrs. Frendo, Mrs. Dingli, Mrs.
Folk, Mrs. Daniele and Mrs. Edgar are the names behind the kind actions and attentive care our children receive during their lunch hour at
Sts. Martha and Mary. These ladies have endured many a cold, windy day in support of the safety, security and attention to safe play that is a part of your child‟s daily routine. We offer them our deepest thanks for the kindness and care they always share.
THIS IS YOUR SCHOOL…
Sts. Martha and Mary is a community gathering place, as it should be. Our site is enjoyed by many children, parents and visitors. If during evenings or weekends you happen to see anyone not respecting our school and its importance, please notify the school or contact the police.

School Council of Sts. Martha and Mary gives a heart-felt thank you to the parents, staff and students for all their valuable contributions, whether it was helping by volunteering in the school or donating to the school‟s fundraising efforts.
This year your School Council organized and implemented a number of activities during the school year with the assistance of school staff and parent volunteers:
School September Open House BBQ with an expanded menu, drinks and desserts this year
Halloween Dance-a-thon Fundraiser – raised $5,766.89

Parish and Sharelife donations
Subsidize presentations to children including Mad Science
Play Day and Grade 8 Graduation Refreshments

In consultation with the teachers, new initiatives this year included:
Nelson Student Success workbooks for grades 7 and 8 students
Library sofas
Student Leader T-shirts
Subsidize dramatic presentations
Gymnasium sound field system
Physical education equipment
2 way radios
In total, the school community was able to supply over $15,000 in activities and items for the school that would have otherwise gone unfunded. It is an amazing accomplishment and a testament to the school community‟s generosity and commitment to our students.
As we look ahead to the next school year, please consider coming out to the School Council meetings, even if you only have time for one or two. It really does give you a better understanding of the workings of the school, the projects that are happening throughout the year as well as developing an awareness of the role of the School Council supporting the principal.
PIZZA DAYS: The Sts. Martha and Mary School Council would like to say “thank you” to everyone who ordered pizza. We appreciate your commitment in supporting the many changes that were made to our pizza day this year.
Your contributions have made such a difference to our school. Our pizza sales raised over $9,600.00 this year! This money is used to fund various activities, events and supplies for the students and teachers of Sts. Martha and
Mary School.
We would also like to offer a sincere thank you to our pizza volunteers – Mrs. Folk, Mrs. Brenzavich, Mrs. Smith-Loeters,
Mrs. Holleran, Mrs. Casale, Mrs. Ragan, Mrs. Rovito, Mrs. Wylie, Mrs. Romany, Mrs. Folk, and Mrs. Horich, for giving of their time and effort. Everyone is welcome to join so please consider volunteering for pizza day next year.

LOST LIBRARY BOOKS!
These last few weeks of June find the library even busier than ever. As we scour the shelves for lost books we have quickly become aware of our diminishing resources. The school library is sending out an “all call” for unreturned items. Students have received information through class lists and announcements. Any items not returned by Friday June 17, 2011 , will be followed up with an overdue letter. In order to jog those memories, some students will wear home a bracelet with a reminder bead attached. We hope this will be a helpful reminder! Please also look for text books as our school policy is that report cards will be withheld at the office until all items are returned or payment for their replacement is made.
We are looking for many lost school books, even from the past and would appreciate families taking the time and making the effort to look for lost treasures.
Look for summer reading programs too! Burnhamthorpe Branch Library, recently renovated, offers a Summer Reading Club. It is free for children to join and kits can be picked up starting July. Remember, library cards are still free!
