Our Catholic School Heritage
God has given us the virtues of friends and
companions to keep us company and to
help us out along the way.
Every person in our lives carries the Spirit
of God – and so every person is our brother or sister through Jesus Christ.
As brothers and sisters who share one Holy
Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We all
deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness, which
are different ways of saying respect.
That respect should come first and foremost from ourselves. We have to respect
ourselves and then we will be able to respect others. We should also be able to
expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet – our brothers and sisters in
Jesus.
Through prayer and concentration, we can
get better at respecting ourselves as well
as respecting those around us.

Catholics wanted separate schools where all
the beliefs of the Catholic Church would be
taught, where the pupils would live their faith
in a sacramental and community manner in
proximity to the parish church and priest, and
where religion would permeate the reading,
literature and history curriculum. Furthermore,
as modern times arrived, the multiculturalism
of the public school’s student body necessitated the eradication of the teaching of Christianity.
FAREWELL AND CONGRATULATIONS!
After 24 years of dedicated service to the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board,
Mrs. Brazeau, our dedicated secretary is retiring. The organization and presence she has
offered to students, staff and parents over the
last 14 years at San Lorenzo Ruiz will be
missed.
It is with tears we say farewell and with joy we
wish her well as she begins this new phase in
her life. Her last day at San Lorenzo Ruiz is February 28, 2014.
Thank you Mrs. Brazeau!
Congratulations to Mrs. Hajdinjak, who will be
replacing Mrs. Brazeau.

Well before the coming of the first European settlers, Canada's Aboriginal peoples

maple leaf began to serve as a Canadian
symbol as early as 1700.

SAFETY IN THE GYM
Students are reminded that they must wear
proper indoor shoes for gym and appropriate
gym clothes. Jewelry must be removed when

in gym class or during sports activities. Students are not allowed to wear their “outside”
shoes in the gym.
WINTER FOOTWEAR
Parents are asked to ensure that students
come to school with footwear appropriate
for the conditions. In order to maintain
student safety and cleanliness of the building, all students must have indoor and outdoor shoes.
SNOW AND ICE
Now that the cold months have arrived
and snow and ice are plentiful, a reminder
of our safety policy is warranted. Throwing
snowballs and sliding on ice are not allowed. As much fun as snow and ice are,
they can be very dangerous when there
are many people in one area. Most student injuries happen during the winter
months. In order for our school to be as
safe as possible, the school rule must be
that snow stays on the ground—no snowballs, kicking snow or any other activity
with snow or ice that could be harmful.
Please take a few moments to reinforce
these important safety rules with your children.
CLASS TRIP VOLUNTEERS
Throughout the year classes attend trips
away from the school for various reasons.
We are fortunate to have the support and
supervision of many parents and family
members on these trips. Without adequate adult supervision as outlined in the
board’s policies, students may not travel
off school property. In order to ensure
that the trip can go ahead as planned, if
you have signed up to accompany the
class, it is very important that you provide
sufficient notice to the classroom teacher
to make alternate arrangements for supervision should you become unable to

Operations: Understanding Numbers
Numbers are used to describe quantities, to
count, and to add, subtract, multiply, and
divide. Understanding numbers and knowing
how to combine them to solve problems helps
us in all areas of math.
Family Math Activities K-2
 Ask your child to help you solve everyday number problems. "We need six tomatoes to make our
sauce for dinner, and we have only two. How many more do we need to buy?" "You have two pillows in your
room and your sister has two pillows in her room. How many pillowcases do I need to wash?" "Two guests
are coming to eat dinner with us. How many plates will we need?"
 Practice "skip counting". Together, count by 2's and 5's. Ask your child how far he or she can count by
10's. Roll two dice, one to determine a starting number and the other to determine the counting interval
(e.g., counting by 1’s, 2’s, 3’s, etc…). Ask your child to try counting backwards from 10, 20, or even 100.
 Make up games using dice and playing cards. Try rolling dice and adding the numbers that come up.
Add up the totals until you reach a target number, like
50. Play the game backwards to practice subtraction.
