When we act out these virtues, we are making the presence of God visible in

THE VIRTUE OF EMPATHY
In the month of October, we celebrate the virtue of Empathy. Empathetic people are those
who can put themselves in another’s shoes. They demonstrate the capacity to feel what the
other person is feeling and recognize the depth of the emotions of others. Living the virtue of
Empathy allows us to recognize and affirm the dignity of one another and of ourselves.
As we work, live and play with one another this year, may we seek the strength of the Holy
Spirit to live the virtue of Empathy each day.
The Virtue of Empathy will be celebrated in the gym on Friday October 10th at noon. All parents are welcome.

This year, once again, San Lorenzo Ruiz

wide activities. The first is a "Thank It Forward" activity in which the Youth Ambassador team will fill out a card that thanks
someone who has influenced their life in a
positive way. With the card, the students
will include a blank card for the recipient to
complete and pass forward to someone else,
sending the thankfulness forward to another
person. We are excited to see the ripple
effect of our thankful spirit!
The second activity is to again collect any

The Rosary Apostolates will be returning to
our school this year.

EQAO UPDATE
Our Spring 2014 Grade 3 and 6 EQAO results are in and San Lorenzo Ruiz students have once again outperformed
both the Board and Province an all areas: Reading, Writing and Mathematics! Congratulations to our students and
teachers who have collectively worked hard to help our students become good readers and writers.
You can continue to support your child’s learning by talking about the Mathematics that you encounter in day to day
activities such as making change, measuring while cooking, budgeting, estimating, patterning. Talk with your child
about the kinds of Math they are working on and help your child to see how it applies in daily life! And, as always,
continuing to read with your child into their junior and intermediate years is important to help your child develop the
comprehension and critical literacy skills which they will need to be successful in their later school years and in life.
Try adding some time to read together into your regular routine - it is an excellent way to spend some of your family
time!

Are You Ticked?
OPEN HOUSE
Direction of school
support (taxes) has
long been an issue
for Catholic school
boards in Ontario.
The fact is that,
unless the
municipality is
notified, the school
support designation,
for assessment
purposes,
automatically
defaults to public
school support when
an individual or
family moves to a
new address. This
may have an impact
on students’
eligibility to attend
Catholic elementary
schools, trustee
representation on
school boards and
on government
perception of
support for Catholic
education. We want
to bring a greater
awareness around
this matter and have
created the Are You
Ticked? Campaign
as the
communication
vehicle for this
awareness. If you
would like more
information on
school support
designation or would
like us to help you
check or change
your school support
designation to the
Catholic system,
please call (905) 890
-0708 ext. 24512.
Our annual Open House was held on Thursday, September 18th and was a great success. A BIG thank you to all staff for their
preparation for the event. Thank you also to
our parents and families who came to visit.
VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL AND SIGN-IN
PROCEDURES
For safety reasons we remind you that all
visitors must report to the office and sign in.
Please do not go into the school yard or to
your child’s class without signing in first and
receiving approval and a visitor sticker.
REMEMBER, TO YOUR CHILD YOU ARE THE
PARENT....TO THE OTHER STUDENTS YOU
ARE A STRANGER. SO ONCE AGAIN...PLEASE
REPORT TO THE OFFICE FIRST AND SIGN IN.
Students must sign in or out when: they are
late arriving to school in the morning or
afternoon or when they have a parent note
granting permission to leave the school early
for appointments etc.
NO STUDENT IS TO BE DISMISSED DIRECTLY
FROM THE CLASSROOM
BY TEACHERS OR
PICKED UP AT THE
CLASSROOM BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS ETC..
ALL MUST COME TO
THE OFFICE AND SIGN
IN OR OUT.
REMINDER: MORNING SUPERVISION OF
STUDENTS
Please be reminded that supervision of students begins at 8:00 a.m. daily. Please do
not drop your child prior to this time. As
mentioned in a previous communication,
parents are asked to refrain from standing in
the school yard behind the building with students in the morning. In order to maintain
Page 4
student safety, your cooperation in this
matter is appreciated. We work hard to
teach students to identify strangers on the
property and having many adults standing
in the yard in the morning makes it difficult
for students and teachers to attend to this
important safety factor.

LATE ARRIVALS
It is important that your children arrive at
school on time. Late arrivals have a direct
impact on learning in school and they also
disrupt the classroom during lessons.
Your assistance is appreciated in supporting your child’s learning by reinforcing
that punctuality is an important responsibility that should be developed not only for
success in school, but later in life as well.
DISTRIBUTION OF MEDICATION
Please be advised that for safety reason,
no child should bring any form of medication to school without prior approval from
the office. The school will store necessary
medication if a Request Form has been
filled out and signed by the
parent/guardian. Forms are available in
the office. Please note, the school cannot
administer medication to your child with
the exception of an Epi-Pen in the instance
of an anaphylactic reaction.
PEDICULOSIS (HEAD LICE)
Pediculosis is a problem which occurs from
time to time each year in schools. If cases
are found, we inform all parents of the
San Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic School
class involved by letter. If a child is infected, we request that she/he be kept out of school until she/he
has been treated with the correct medicated shampoo. Please keep us informed if this happens to your
child.
ANAPHYLACTIC INFORMATION
We would like to remind you that San Lorenzo Ruiz
Catholic School is an allergen aware school. There
are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and
life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as
peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest
quantities can cause severe life threatening reactions.
Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic
reaction. The most common allergen triggers are
food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex.
An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from
two or more body systems. We would appreciate
the cooperation of the entire school community by
NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain
nuts, nut oils or derivatives (e.g. peanut butter, peanuts, or peanut oil ) which could potentially harm a
pupil. Please do not send food for birthday or special occasions. There are many alternatives such as
stickers and pencils. If you have any questions
please talk to your child’s teacher. We look forward
to our co-operation in making this a safe year for all
our pupils.
EPI-PENS
If your child has a prescription for an Epi-Pen AutoInjector, please ensure that your prescription is up
to date (i.e. the Epi-Pen has not expired) and an EpiPen is brought into school for storage. Parents are
responsible for ensuring that all medication and
forms are updated annually. Please see the office if
you have any questions or concerns. Please let the
office know immediately if you become aware of an
allergy or medical condition (e.g. seizures, etc.) that
may impact upon the health and well-being of your
child.

EMERGENCY INFORMATION
It is vital that we are able to contact you during school
hours, should an emergency arise. We have on record
telephone numbers for home, work and an emergency
contact person. In order to keep our records up-to-date,
please ensure that the office has updated information
by returning the Student Verification Sheet provided by
the teacher earlier in the year.
INDOOR / OUTDOOR SHOES
All students should have a pair of indoor shoes to wear
at school in class and for gym. Outdoor shoes/ boots
will be kept for outdoor use only. Outdoor shoes will be
lined up outside of the classroom in order to reduce the
amount of dirt and mud brought indoors. This will assist
Mr. Pizzorusso and staff in keeping the school clean.
WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY
On October 3rd, Dufferin-Peel schools will join the chorus of voices worldwide to acknowledge the key role educators play in guiding children, through the life-long
learning process.
World Teachers’ Day gives us an opportunity to recognize the dedication and value of all teachers and support
staff at San Lorenzo Ruiz.
GIRLS’ SOCCER TOURNAMENT
The Girls Intermediate Soccer Team
had a very successful day on Tuesday,
September 30th at Dixie and 407 Soccer Field, winning silver. Their hard
work and preparation paid off. The
team made their coaches and school proud because
they played with great team spirit and above all excellent sportsmanship. Congratulations! Thank you to Mr.
Powers who coached the team.
