March 2nd, 2014 – EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Today’s readings encourage us to avoid unnecessary worries, to put our trust in the love and providence of our merciful God, live
each day as it comes, and do His will and recognize His abiding presence. The first reading is one of the most touching expressions
of God’s love in the Bible: “can a mother forget her infant? ”and His solemn promise: “I will never forget you”. In the second
reading St. Paul asserts his authority as an apostle and exhorts believers not to worry who brought them to the Christian faith, and
not to judge him and other preachers. It is only God who has the right to judge. In the first part of today’s gospel Jesus emphasizes
the impossibility of serving two masters, namely God and riches. The second part states that worry is the pagan and irreligious
attitude of those who don’t believe in a loving and providing God.
