Twenty second meeting of the tenth Senate was called to order at 5:00 pm on Tuesday April 10, 2012. Roll was taken and then a group photo was taken. There were 30 senators present. Senator Patel moved to approve the minutes from last week. Passed. Officer reports President Billy Stephens Let's pass this legislation. Executive Vice President Kendrick Bryan I am working on the off campus website. Administrative Vice President Devon Hilderbrandt Pass legislation. Speaker Kaylee Egerer Thanks for coming out, you all look pretty. We do not have many weeks left. Congrats to those who were reflected and be thinking about positions you might want to pursue. Speak to Cory about any executive positions and speaker elections will be next week. Staff Reports Chief of Staff- Eric Smiley Director of Academic and Student Affairs -Travis Taylor HODS deadline is this week and there will be a short exec meeting after senate. Also the end of the year banquet and awards will be coming up soon. IT Director- Cory Dodds Applications for exec and judicial positions are available on the website; I would like to have them by Friday. I talked to Dr. Tougas about getting an estimate on provide a ride for next year. Director of Public Relations- Jane Wood One thing, Keyana is trying to pass a bill for t-shirts for campus clean-up. We brought pictures for you all to look at. We have to suspend the by-laws in order to pass and pay for it. Also this Friday Poorvie has an event going on that I will let her talk about later. Committee Reports Campus Improvements-Keyana Boka We have two bills up, one for Invisible Children and one for volunteer t-shirts for those who participate in campus clean-up on Tuesday and we have pictures of what they will look like. Public Relations- Mallory Treece Meeting after this right here. Academic Affairs- Brittany Crowley Travis Taylor: She's working on scholarships and hopes to have final bills up next week. Special Reports Unfinished Business Bill 15-12-S: Funding for the Organizations Nonprofit Student Association, Iota Phi Theta, Financial Planning Association Senator Asbery motioned to have the bill constructively read. Passed. Senator Newman: These were good organizations, we were strict with the last bit of money, and we even turned some down. Speaker Egerer: Some friendly amendments have been made and the edited version was sent to Devon. Passed. Bill 16-12-S: Funding for the Organizations WKU Pre-Veterinarian Club, Black Student Alliance, Alpha Omicron Pi, The Kentucky Association of Nursing Students, and Volunteerism in Progress Senator Costa motioned to have the bill constructively read. Passed. Senator Newman: We turned some down and none of these groups got the full amount of funding since we were so low on funds. They all had good budgets and reasons. Speaker Egerer: This is the last org aid bill. Passed. Senator Garland motioned to suspend the by-laws and to move Resolution 4-12-S into old business. Two senators opposed and one abstained. Passed. Resolution 4-12-S: A Resolution Supporting the Collegiate Housing and Infrastructure Act Senator Patel: Basically there is a tax code for nonprofit housing so donors who donate to them tax free. A lot of these places are lacking safety measures. I will be lobbying this in DC. Our donors here get 100% tax exemption but this would make it federal. Senator Forsythe: Change the semicolons to commas and after third resolution should say “Therefore: Be it resolved” and there is no purpose clause. Senator Shaw: What's the law say now? Senator Patel: If donors donate to not for profit then they don't get any tax exemptions so people won't donate money. Our fee for residence halls goes back into the halls themselves and not the university. One senator abstained. Bill passed. Senator Broderick motioned to move Bill 18-12-S to old business. Two senators opposed. Passed. Bill 18-12-S: Funding for Campus Clean-up Volunteer T-shirts Senator Boka: trying to get thirst to give Away shirts since we don't have sga tshirts something for us to share and show our name off. This is the rush price could be less. Senator Shaw: How many shirts are you ordering? Senator Boka: 30 Senator Shaw: You should put how many you are purchasing in the bill. Senator Forsythe: Spell out WKU and the last clause sounds funny. Take out the “comma and” in the last whereas clause. One oppose one abstain. Pass. Senator Mullins motioned to move back into the by-laws. One senator opposed. Passed. New Business Bill 17-12-S: Funding for Invisible Children’s “Cover the Night” Event Announcements Senator Patel: This Friday April 13 is National Happiness Day. I was in a class that has been surveying students to find out how happy they are. We will be presenting the results and having an event between Minton and DUC from 1:00-5:00. There is already 11 organizations signed up. They are organizations that make you happy, and I know SGA makes me happy! There will be corn hole, cotton candy, and a juggler. SGA should have a table! Jane Wood: We need people to work the table from 1:00-5:00 so if you want to work come sign up. We will be selling Kelly's shirts and giving out cups and pens and pamphlets. I have a signup sheet, please put your name and email. If you sign up then you have committed and you need to show because the table can’t be empty. Cory Dodds: I was contacted by the Dean of the libraries and they are having a new committee and they are looking for two students to join. Keyana has already volunteered but we still are looking for one more. Speaker Egerer: I am so proud of Poorvie, she is lobbying in DC and it all starts here and that is so cool. I am glad we had our picture taken out here in this nice atmosphere. Senator Broderick motioned to adjourn the meeting. Motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
