Denny Sanford A Message from President Cunningham As founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of a multinational graphics communications company, I learned a thing or two about communications and technology in the Digital Age. As President of National University, those lessons continue to serve me well. Staying current with the way information is packaged and delivered is more essential than ever. With proper innovation and evolution, vital messages can be shared more quickly, more clearly, and more cost-effectively. This makes as much sense from the standpoint of higher education as it does from a business perspective. With that in mind, I am pleased to announce the firstever digital edition of Vision magazine, your alumni publication. Previous surveys indicated that National University graduates were ready to embrace electronic one edition annually, we now aim to publish three pages in place of paper ones; and the substantial editions per year. That means you will be informed savings from not printing and mailing tens of thousands more affordably, more frequently, and more fully about of editions will be reinvested into better services and your alma mater than ever before. resources for students and alumni – exactly what you’ve come to expect from National University leadership. How did the Sanford Education Center come to be? Why did the President of the University of Maine at Augusta travel across a continent to become executive director of the Sanford Education Center? Why did the outgoing San Diego Foundation CEO accept a role as Executive-in-Residence at the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy? What are the Center’s short-term goals? How much of an impact can it realistically expect to have in the long term? How will these developments affect alumni, and what will Chancellor Cunningham do to top his first year in office? Ideally, PART 2: ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT the relationship with your alma mater should accompany you far beyond the classroom. The University has a vested interest in your long-term success and your involvement with the community, and in turn has a lot to offer as you mature and evolve as a lifelong learner. Even at a nontraditional or online-based institution of higher learning, the importance of a cohesive alumni base shouldn’t be discounted. Graduate networks constitute one of the core benefits and values of higher education. Just as surely as knowledge is power, there is strength in numbers; and membership in an elite coalition of almost 150,000 well-educated and ambitious classmates is something you’ve earned. Don’t underestimate its worth. National University is committed to investing in alumni relations, and has recently ramped up the events and benefits it offers to graduates. The following pages highlight some of the new approaches and opportunities that are bringing alumni together and strengthening bonds and connections that in turn reward those who participate. The plan is to cultivate and grow activities and offerings in your community that will compliment and enrich your education for years to come. The University has a vested interest in your long term success and your involvement with the community, and in turn has a lot to offer as you mature and evolve as a lifelong learner. PART 2: ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT 2.2 Padres Partnership Builds Cohesion, Strengthens National University Community Last spring, National University began an educational partnership with the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball; a partnership created to build visibility and support for students, alumni, and the University while providing a valuable social hub for connecting with University constituents and the community. National University’s partnership with the San Diego Padres provided an ideal setting to honor inaugural recipients of the National University Military Scholarship. The partnership delivered many “hits” for the University throughout the season. It generated scholarship money from the Padres, placed prominent signage in left field that cameras captured during many home runs, and created a significant media presence that projected National’s brand image nationwide. Another major benefit for NU was access to Petco Park, where the Padres play. It provided California’s second-largest private, nonprofit university with a big-league venue for alumni tributes—a special place for events and significant group gatherings. The School of Education provided hundreds of tickets to graduates serving as educators and educational leaders. The Padres honored San Diego County’s teachers of the year—more than 30 percent of whom were National alumni. VIPs were provided with baseball caps and treated to a catered buffet in some of the best seats in Petco Park. National University graduates didn’t have to be Padres fans to benefit from the partnership. Supporters of the Giants, Dodgers, Angels, Athletics and many other teams were able to procure game tickets at discounts of 20 percent or more and watch All Star players such as World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner, Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw, or MLB batting title winner Jose Altuve. “More important than the game is the chance to relax with family and meet some new friends,” said National University Military Scholarship recipient Chase Christy, who was invited to the ballpark on July 5. “It’s been a fun time, and I really feel appreciated by my school, the fans, and the team.” vision | NU Alumni Magazine PART 2: ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT 2.3 National University Returns as Title Sponsor for the 2014 Holiday Bowl Post-season college football is more popular now than ever, and that’s good news for National University, which returns as title sponsor for the 2014 Holiday Bowl. The gridiron has long been a premier showcase for higher education, providing major visibility for colleges and universities with winning football teams; but until recently, nontraditional schools without sports programs missed the opportunity to compete for national exposure. PART 2: ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT According to ESPN, college bowl game telecasts in 2013 enjoyed a nine percent increase in household ratings, with an average audience of close to 6 million viewers. As title sponsor for the 2013 Holiday Bowl, National University was able to dramatically magnify its brand and introduce itself to new markets while reinforcing its presence in San Diego and throughout California. The 2014 National University Holiday Bowl is set for December 27. It will be the first time since 1990 that the 37-year-old tournament is played on a Saturday. Kickoff is at 5 p.m. at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. The game, which will be televised live on ESPN, matches a Big Ten Conference team against a team from the Pac-12 Conference. “This is shaping up to be an exciting bowl game season for us here in San Diego,” says Vincent Mudd, president of the 2014 San Diego Bowl Game This year’s National University Holiday Bowl will expose the University to a nationwide, Saturday night audience. Graduates and guests will be invited to participate in a 5K race and a parade, and there will be tickets and ticket discounts available for the game. Beyond football, the various events that are part of the National University Holiday Bowl experience provide a number of opportunities for students and alumni to join the fun and show their NU pride. PART 2: ALUMNI ENGAGEMENT 2014 has been marked by several significant events for NU alumni and the community to come together. 2015 promises to build on the successes and new partnerships forged this year. School spirit was the order of the day at the 2013 Holiday Bowl, where the National University community came together to show their pride, and to honor our military and teachers with special in-game tributes.
