The holiday season is one of warm festivities, family, friends, but it can
also produce stress. Students, instructors, and the college staff all
face the joy of the holiday spirit coupled with the end of one semester
and the beginning of another. The staff at the MCC Northern Tier
Center is happy to assist students and help them better enjoy the holiday by making the transition from Fall to Winter semester as easy as
possible. Taking classes at NTC Clio during winter will help students
reduce their driving distance during the inclement winter season. If
you wish to keep your classes at the Clio location we can assist you in
seeing if this is possible.
Below you will find suggestions for both our college transition and one for making your holiday less
stressful.
Semester Transition Tips
1.
Winter Semester 2013

Try to register for classes before the MCC Holiday Break. The college will be closed from
December 22, 2012-January 1, 2013.

Qualified students may register on-line or in person at any campus location. However,
NTC and all campus locations will have Counseling hours to assist students with registration.

Review your class schedule to reduce your drive time for winter. Most general classes
can be taken at the NTC/Clio site.

Make sure to check your financial aid status. December 10, 2012 is the payment deadline
date. Students can register after this date must secure a payment option at the time of
registration.
2.
If you need to drop a class for Fall semester, make sure you understand how it will affect your
financial aid, tuition balances, and academic standing. You may speak with a Counselor for
assistance.
3.
December 12, 2012 is the last day to drop a class and receive a “W”. A “W” will not affect your
G.P.A but will be used for Financial Aid standards.
Holiday Stress Reduction Tips
1.
Get enough sleep.
2.
Shop during off hours when stores are not busy and do some shopping on-line. Using gift
certificates can also reduce shopping time.
3.
Donate or purge unneeded decorations and clutter from you home.
4.
Set a budget for your holiday expenses.
5.
Set a deadline to have all your shopping completed which leaves you time to enjoy the days
before the holiday.
6.
Prepare your family for the type of gifts you can afford. De-emphasize commercialism by donating time to a helpful cause or charity.
7.
Do not be afraid to accept help from others.
8.
Prepare some foods ahead of time and put them in the freezer.
The NTC staff and I hope that each of you will have a warm and wonderful holiday. We hope to see
you continue your success at MCC and the Northern Tier Center in the Winter Semester.

H
ello,
I am Officer John F. Keahey; I’ve
been a police officer for nearly 26 years and
retired from the Flint Police Department in
May of 2009. During my career I’ve worked in
many different areas of Law Enforcement
including: Special Operations Bureau, FBI
Safe Streets Task Force, Investigations
(Internal Affairs), and Interim Chief of Police.
After a VERY SHORT retirement I started
working for Mott Public Safety in September
of 2009. I’ve spent the last few years working
at Main Campus, Work Force Development
Center and with high school students as the
School Resource Officer for Mott Middle College. I really enjoy working here at Mott
Community College and consider myself very
fortunate to have met so many wonderful
people the past few years.
Migel Gatica, is a certified police officer with
24 years of Law Enforcement experience. He
retired from the Flint Police Department in
June 2009.
Officer Gatica has been with the Mott Community College since September 2010 where
he was
assigned to work at the Southern
Lakes Branch Center. He was assigned to
work at the Northern Tier Center winter semester 2012.
Their work schedules are (Monday-Friday)
7:30 am-3:30 pm and 3:00 pm - 9:30 pm and
his office is located in Room 109 across the
hall of the Computer Lab.
If you have any questions or issues please,
feel free to contact us at (810) 232-4339 or
Room 109.

The holidays will
soon be upon us,
and as usual,
faster than we
expected. During
this fes ve
season, our thoughts turn to gi s,
visi ng friends and rela ves, and
deligh ul culinary experiences.
However, there are others who think
about unoccupied appliance filled
houses or apartments, distracted
shoppers with extra cash in a purse or
wallet or they are planning their next
“charity scam.”
Sta s cally, crime usually increases
during the holiday season. The basic
reason for this is really very
simple. More people with more cash,
gi s, etc. are “out and about” which
presents more opportuni es for the
criminal looking for an easy “score.”
Of course, the happy shopper is
rushing around, stressed out and
careless, looking for last‐minute gi s,
trying to get everything done or
thinking about what to buy “the
person who has everything.” The
happy shopper is not thinking about
the person in the store or parking lot
that has followed you and knows
exactly where you keep your cash or
where you parked your car.
MCC Police Officers has provided a
number of crime preven on ps that
if prac ced, should see you through a
safe holiday season, Please exercise
cau on during this upcoming special
season. Trust your ins ncts, if
something does not look or feel right,
it probably isn’t. Remember, being
safe should never take a holiday.
While Shopping:

Stay alert and be aware of every‐
thing around you. Take a minute
to observe who may be watching
you.
Park in a highly visible
well‐lighted space. It may be a
daylight when you arrive at the
Mall, but when you come out at 5
or 6 P.M. it will be dark.
Lock your vehicle both when
driving and parked.
Carry your purse close to your
body, not dangling by the straps.
Put a wallet in an inside coat or
front pants pocket.
Have your car keys in your hand
and be ready to open the car
door immediately.
Place all shopping bags, packages
and gi s out of sight (trunk,
under seat).
Always know where you have
parked your car, so you do not
spend unnecessary me walking
around the parking lot.
Look inside and under your car
before entering.
Avoid carrying large amounts of
cash—use debit car, credit card
or check.
Do not overburden yourself with
packages. This will help deter
pickpockets or purse snatchers.
Do not park next to a van or truck
where people can hide.
If you take children shopping,
teach them to go to a police
officer. If they get separated or
lost. Ensure children know that
mommy and daddy would never
send a person they did not know
to “take them home” or “take
them to find mommy or daddy.”

Although some struggling families
and older citizens on a limited income can receive food stamps to
purchase most food items, the food
stamps do NOT cover any personal
care items. The rule of thumb is that
you can’t eat it, you can’t buy it.
In cooperation with the Clio Community Services Christmas Drive, the
Clio
Rotary and Mott Community
College will solicit and donate personal care items for local senior citizens and families culminating in a
presentation at the Rotary meeting on
Tuesday, December 4th.
Items or cash can be donated every
Tuesday morning from 7:30 am to
8:30 am at Rogers Lodge. The Clio
Rotary Board suggests a goal of
$25.00 worth of items per Rotary
member or at least $500 worth of
personal care items to be donated to
the Clio Community Service Christmas Drive.
The following items are examples of
personal care items. It should be
noted that the smaller sizes are not
necessarily the best deals; and that
grocery stores may have better deals
than dollar stores. Also check local
drug stores for deals to maximize
your donation.
If you want to contribute, you can
drop items off at Mott Community
College - Northern Tier Center Administrative Office.
