November 2012
Thomas Saelens Site Manger The staff at the MCC Northern Tier
Center is getting ready for the start of
Winter Semester Class registration.
We are happy that you chose to attend
the Clio Site and look forward to your
continued attendance.
Winter Semester registration will begin
Monday November 5 and NTC will
have additional Counseling/Advising
staff the first two weeks to assist
students with class selection and
registration. With Winter weather
coming this is an excellent time to take
as many NTC classes as possible in
your schedule to reduce driving.
Please be aware of the following
items:
3.
If you need to drop a class for
Fall semester, make sure you
understand how it will affect your
financial aid, tuition balances, and
academic standing. You may
speak with a Counselor for
assistance.
4.
December 12, 2012 is the last day to
drop a class and receive a “W”. A
“W” will not affect your G.P.A., but
will be used for Financial Aid
standards.
5.
As you get close to Mid-Term and
Finals, remember the college has
some amazing resources for
students success that include:

Math Empowerment Zone:
Free math help for any student in
any math class provided by MCC
instructors. (Gorman Center)

Writing Center: Any student with
any writing assignment can get
help by MCC English instructors.
They will critique and assist you
with your assignment.
(Curtice Mott Building)

Tutoring: NTC provides tutoring
in several areas and the Main
Campus Learning Center
provides tutoring and special
accommodations for students
that qualify.
1. Winter 2013 Semester:

Registration will begin on
November 5, 2012; classes begin
on January 12, 2013.

Register EARLY … this will allow
you to get the classes you need.
Register before we close for the
holiday.

The college will be closed for the
Christmas holiday from December
21, 2012 through January 2, 2013.
We will re-open on January 3,
2013.

Qualified students may register
on-line or in-person at any campus
location.

NTC and each campus will have
extra Counseling hours for help
with registration.

December 10, 2012 is the tuition
payment deadline date. You may
still register after this date but only
with a secured payment option on
the day you register for classes.

3 
Leaving Blank Fields: Enter a ‘0’ or ‘not
applicable’ instead of leaving a blank. Too
many blanks may cause miscalculations and an
application rejection.

Listing Parent Marital Status Incorrectly:
The custodial parent’s marital status is needed.
If this parent has remarried, you’ll need the
step-parent’s information too.

Using commas or decimals points in
numeric fields: Always round to the nearest
dollar.


Listing an incorrect Social Security number
or Drivers License number: Make sure you
double check these entries and have someone
else check them as well, triple check to be
sure.
Failure to Report Unborn Children: If you
have a child that will be born before or during
the award year for which you are applying, and
that child will receive more than half of its
support from you, you must count that child as
a member of the household.

Failing to Count Yourself As A Student: The
student completing the FAFSA must count
himself or herself as a member of the
household attending college during the award
year.

Failing to Register With Selective Services: If
you are a male, age 18 to 26, you must register
with Selective Services. Failure to do so will
make you ineligible for federal student aid.

Forgetting to List The College: Obtain the
Federal School Code for the college you plan to
attend and list it along with any other schools
you wish to apply.

Forgetting to Sign and Date: If you’re filing out
the paper FAFSA, be sure to sign it. If you’re
filing electronically using FAFSA on the Web, be
sure to obtain your PIN from www.pin.ed.gov.
Your PIN is your electronic signature and will
always be assigned to you only. Conversely,
you file using FAFSA on the Web, you can print
out the signature page, sign it and send it in.

Sending in a Copy of Your Income Tax Returns: You will be contacted by your school if
your information needs verification. You do not
need to send a copy of your tax returns in with
your FAFSA. Any information sent with your
FAFSA will be destroyed. In addition, do not
write any notes in the margin of your FAFSA. 
Entering the Wrong Address: Do not list a
temporary campus or summer address as your
permanent address.

Entering the Wrong Federal Income Tax
Paid Amount: You can obtain your federal
income tax paid amount from your income tax
return forms, not your W-2 forms. If you have
not yet filed your taxes, you can estimate your
financial information using previous tax years
and correct the amounts on the form later by
going to the corrections page on the FAFSA
website.

Listing Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) as
equal to total income from working: AGI
and total income from working are not necessarily the same. In most cases, the AGI is larger than the total income from working.

Incorrectly Filing Income Taxes as Head of
Household: If there is an error in the head of
household filing status, the school will require
an amended tax return to be filed with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) before disbursement of aid is allowed.

4 Listing Martial Status Incorrectly: On the
question pertaining to martial status, only answer “yes” if you’re currently married or separated. The Department of Education wants to
know what your marital status is on the day you
sign the FAFSA. Mid-year changes to a student’s marital status are not accepted.

spent the last few years working at Main Campus,

fortunate to have met so many wonderful people the
past few years.
