Traffic Safety Concerns School Driveway and Kiss/Ride The safety of our students and staff is of paramount importance. Despite our ongoing conversations about traffic safety, and information shared in our school newsletter about the need for adherence to our school traffic circulation plan, we continue to experience serious incidents related to traffic circulation at the front of the school and in the Parent volunteers are required at this time to assist with the supervision of the school driveway at 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. dismissal. If you are available and would like to offer your time to assist with this supervision, please contact the main office for more information. It is equally imperative that all drivers follow the direction of staff managing the traffic circulation on the school site. Staff are on site 15 minutes prior to the school bell. If you must drive your children to school, please consider arriving earlier in the morning to drop off your children, and please drive courteously, complying with the traffic circulation pattern, signage and direction given on the school site. Being consistently and continuously late interrupts the classroom during lessons, creates delays in the office and sets a poor example for those who do arrive on time. Please note that issues with lates and absenteeism will be dealt with strictly, and may involve the school Administration, Child Youth Worker and Social Worker. Please help us teach your children the value of promptness. But, the safety of all children and staff must be considered at all times. Emergency School Procedure Child Illness There may be days during the upcoming months when inclement weather presents a potential safety hazard to our students. It is essential that parents and children discuss the procedures that they wish to follow for safe arrival at home. Please keep your child home if he/she is sick. We discourage children who have a fever, are coughing, vomiting or have a runny nose, from coming to school. They will recover from their illness quicker if they are resting at home. Snow Stays on the Ground For students that do not take the bus please determine: 1. The best way to walk home; 2. With who the child should walk; 3. Where the child should go if there is no one at home; 4. How the child should seek help if wind and snow are so strong that they cannot see the way home; 5. Ensure school emergency contact information is updated and accurate For student who do take the bus: It is a fact that bad weather may cause delays for student pick up at bus stops. Please sensure that your child has a safe place to go if the bus is late or does nto arrive. If you notice that a student is stranded at a bus stop, please attempt to contact the child’s parent. It is NOT recommended that parents volunteer to drive another child to school without the permission of the child’s parent. If you decide to transport your child to school because buses have been cancelled, please ensure that you have made arrangements for their return home at the end of the school day. Late Buses During the winter months inclement weather may cause disruption of bus transportation and regular school operations. A decision to cancel school transportation and/or to close schools is usually made by 6:30 a.m. and will be announced over local radio and television networks. As the weather worsens please take into consideration that buses may be delayed in reaching their stops. We don’t wish to see students stranded out in the elements so, on inclement days, please: • Listen to the radio for bus cancellations. • Consult the GeoQuery website: www.stopr.ca • If possible, arrange for car pooling. • Parent inquiries call Student Transportation 905- 8906000 or 1-800-668-1140. Wait no more than 15 minutes for a late bus. Contact the school or the above listed numbers if your bus has not arrived and wait for information regarding arrival. As the winter weather begins, students are reminded that “Snow Stays on the Ground”. Every child in the school will be made aware of the importance of this rule in preventing injury to others. Students are encouraged to constructively use the snow that winter brings to build snowmen, forts, snow sculptures, etc. Please assist us by reviewing with your child the dangers of throwing snowballs and the importance of preventing injury to other children. Together we will continue to create a school yard which is safe for all during winter. Collecting of money for Pizza Days, School Trips, etc. Please ensure that when you are submitting money with your child for trips, food orders, etc. to please treat them separately and send in the exact change. (We are not able to provide change or tamper with money in envelopes). Please do not combine siblings or single child orders together. This creates confusion for our Accounting Department. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. Excursions and Field Trips Educational trips that extend learning opportunities are encouraged. Teachers must follow appropriate Board procedures and by law, the school must have on file permission forms which must be signed by parents. VERBAL PERMISSION can not and will not be accepted. Valuables Please help us to protect your child’s valuables by keeping them at home. Staff cannot be responsible for any valuables that your child brings to school. In order to avoid valuables being lost or misplaced please keep them at home. We are part of a family. We are part of our school and we are part of our country. Canada is made up of individuals who are part of many groups. We respect each other’s differences. Perhaps as a family, you could discuss these questions: Why did people come to Canada? What are their dreams as they sought acceptance to the nation of Canada? The Virtues January Virtue of the Month is SELF CONTROL God has given us the ability to choose. We are able to control how we react to what happens around us. We’ve all “lost it” at one time or another. We are never proud of those moments. As soon as they happen we make a promise that they will not happen again. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at controlling our reactions. We can get better at showing self control. When we all use self-control, we can be sure that our school will be a safe, caring, and inclusive place to live and learn. A person with Self-Control: Is patient Knows how to wait his/her turn Can calm him/herself down and think before reacting to situations Knows how to avoid physical aggression Can think things through and do what is best for everyone What time does Teacher Supervision begin on the school yard in the morning.
