EASTER
This year, we observed Holy Week from March 20 until our Easter celebration on March 27. During
our preparations, students had opportunities to pray the Stations of the Cross, organized by the Youth
Faith Ambassadors. We thank them for their thoughtful leadership in preparing this experience for the
school. In the days following Easter, we celebrate the presence of the Risen Lord. We are called to see
the world through the eyes of the resurrection. We live with the knowledge that we are not to remain in
the tomb of darkness but will rise again. We thank Father Charles for celebrating Easter Mass with us
on April 30 and thank all parents who were able to join us to celebrate the Lord’s resurrection! On
behalf of the entire Canadian Martyrs staff, I would like to wish the Canadian Martyrs School
Community a Happy Easter! Let us celebrate new life as we look forward to Spring!- P. WILD

WHAT’S UP AT CMART?
Class Placements for 2016/17
We will soon begin the process of developing class
lists and staffing for the 2016/2017 school year.
Parents may provide input by submitting a letter in
writing before May 1st. Please include information
regarding factors in a learning environment that are
relevant to your child’s class placement i.e.; teacher’s
instructional style, peer relationships, child’s learning
style, etc. Please do not specify specific teachers. The
goal of the extensive process we employ at Canadian
Martyrs is to maximize the groupings of students to
ensure we create the best possible educational
environment for all. In each class we strive for a
balance of learning styles, gender, learning needs and
a cross section of abilities.
Family of Schools Chess tournament
March 11th
On Friday, April 1, 2016 six primary
students and six junior students competed
at The Mississauga East Chess
Tournament. The players showed great
strategy, concentration and good
sportsmanship as they exhibited true
Wildcat spirit! Mr. Roda and Ms. Gough
would like to say how proud we are of all
the students who came to the tournament
and thank those students who have been
coming to chess club since January. Special
thanks to Ms. Hilton for helping out with
chess club and to Mrs. Conway-Metallo for
assisting in supervising the teams at the
tournament. Great job chess team and we
hope to see you next year!
Kudos to all of the players who represented
our school so well:
Earth Hour at Canadian Martyrs!
On Wednesday, March 30, as part of our Canadian
Martyrs EcoClub initiatives, the whole school
acknowledged Earth Hour by turning off all lights and
uneccesssary electronics for one hour in the afternoon.
Our EcoClub is committed to promoting simple ways in
which we can each act as more responsible stewards of
God’s magnificent creation – our earth!

IMPORTANT INFO
EQAO Assessments for Grade 3 & 6
The province has designated May 25th to June 8th as the time
for administering EQAO provincial assessments. The grade six
students will write the test the week of May 25—31 and grade
three students will write during the week of June 1—8. We ask
that school day appointments for Grade 3 & 6 students be
avoided. The results of these tests will be received in the fall of
2016. For parents interested in more information about these
assessments, there is a website made available by the province,
www.eqao.com. The website has parent resources, samples of the
assessment questions for providing practice and support for your
child and other related information.
EQAO Parent tips: Strategies for Success
Stay positive
Here are a few things you can do to help your child stay positive
about the test:
 Celebrate your child's successes and efforts each day.
 Limit your child’s absences from school.
 Schedule appointments at times other than the
assessment period.
 Ensure that your child gets a good night's sleep and eats a
healthy breakfast and lunch.
 Make sure that your child arrives at school on time.
 Speak positively about the test. Say things like, "Try your
best."
 Continue regularly scheduled extra-curricular activities.
Literacy Tips
 Stop and talk about the book. Make predictions, talk
about new words or ask questions.
 Ask your child to retell the story as he remembers it.
 Have your child relate the story to her/his own
experiences (e.g., What does that remind you of?).
 Encourage your child to read factual texts as well as
fiction.
 Let your kids see you as a reader.
 Show ways you use writing in everyday life.
 Encourage your child to write for many different
purposes (lists, recipes, letters, research reports, journals,
stories, instructions).
 Focus on your child’s strengths, learning to write well is a
difficult process.
 Encourage risk-taking.
 Praise his/her attempts.
Use math daily
 Encourage the use of manipulatives (counters, shapes,
etc. to help show his/her thinking).
 Help your child to see practical uses for math.
 Encourage your child to estimate first, then figure it out.
 Encourage your child to problem-solve.
 Sometimes there is more than one right answer!
 Encourage your child to communicate how the problem
was solved.

Kiss n’ Ride News
As Spring approaches we are hoping that
many more students will walk to school
and that the Kiss n’ Ride Program will be
much less crowded. We appreciate your
patience as we have kept students as safe as
possible with the heavy traffic situation.
You can help us to keep kids safe by:

Entering the school driveway and Kiss n’
Ride lane one vehicle at a time and not trying
to pass others by using the inside lane or
cutting in front of school buses.

We empty the lane completely and then fill it
