Advent Prayer

The circle of this wreath will remind us of the coming of Christ, whose love for us has no end.

The light of these candles will remind us of the coming of Christ, who is the light of the world.

The green colour of these branches will remind us of the coming of Christ, who brings us eternal life.

My friends, let us bless the Lord.

By day and by night, and through every season, you watch over us, Lord.

We praise you for this Advent wreath.

It is the evergreen crown of your people, and it shines with the promise of victory.

By the light of this wreath we shall wait in patience for your Son our Lord Jesus Christ.

He will comfort our fears and bring hope to our waiting world.

All glory be yours, now and forever.

Amen

Acts of Hope and Conscience

Christmas is the time of year when opportunities present themselves in our community to put our Catholic virtues into action.

At Canadian Martyrs we are involving students in developing a social conscience for those who are in need, challenged with sickness or alone at this special time of the year.

This year the Student Council and the Youth Faith Ambassadors will once again be collecting nonperishable food items for our Food

Drive .

If possible, please send along a donation with your child or drop one off the night of the Christmas

Movember

Throughout the month of November Mr. Wild,

Mr. Virdo, Mr. Mahoney, Mr. Sanchez and Mr.

Kelly sported fantastic moustaches on their faces’ in support of the Movember Foundation . As a result of community and staff support, we were able to raise well over $500.00 for this important men’s health initiative. Thanks to all those who supported this worthy cause and a big thank you to our Canadian Martyrs Mo-Bros for leading the charge!

Bullying

Bullying awareness week was acknowledged throughout all

Dufferin-Peel CDSB schools from

November 16-20, 2015. Here at the school, in addition to the in-class activities facilitated by classroom teachers, the school made a series of awareness announcements as part of the school opening exercises and composed Twitter Messages for the school account.

The following suggestions are provided as reminder:

To prevent cyber bullying…

*Defend the victim by talking to the bully on the Internet, as with text message or Facebook

To prevent physical bullying…

*As bystander provide support for the victim, and seek adult help and avoid getting involved in the ‘fight’

*To prevent social bullying…

*If you hear people talking about the victim try to stop it as soon as possible

*To prevent verbal bullying…

Go to the bully and tell them to stop, but do not put yourself in danger; or before the bully even does anything you can take the victim away before he or she gets their feeling hurt.

DON’T GIVE THE BULLY THE

ATTENTION!

Rocks and Rings

In partnership with Curling Canada, the Rocks & Rings program is designed to introduce the Olympic sport of curling to elementary school children. By bringing the curling rink to the school gym we reach children that would otherwise not have access to the roaring game.

The best part? We bring everything to the kids – no field trip or school buses required! Curling is a highly social sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. It is a fantastic physical activity that can be enjoyed by all ages and abilities. It also promotes sportsmanship and camaraderie and is an inexpensive and less dangerous alternative to many other sports.

The Rocks & Rings program will be visiting Canadian Martyrs from December 16 th -17 th , 2015.

Bookmark Challenge

During November the primary and junior students participated in a Bookmark Challenge. The Learning Goal was to inspire students to read and/or research in our school library. There were so many artistic and interesting bookmarks that I enlisted the help of all students. Each child had the opportunity to cast a ballot from the top three winning bookmarks in each division. A huge congratulations goes out to Maya in Mr.

Virdo's grade 3 class for winning the Bookmark Challenge in the primary division and Nicole in Ms. Gough's class for winning in the junior division. These two bookmarks will be photocopied and available for any student in our school to have.

For Your Information

A Message From Peel Police

With the Christmas season upon us, and the winter break coming up soon, I wanted to take an opportunity to ask that you please use caution when driving. Kids will without a doubt be excited to have a break from school and also about the gifts that Santa is going to bring and therefore may not be paying attention to road safety.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents and guardians that parking your vehicle on the driveway is not allowed as it is designated as a fire route. While I understand that parking here is convenient when dropping off your child, please keep in mind that if you leave your vehicle unattended and there is an emergency at the school, your car parked in the driveway may cause a hazard to responding emergency vehicles, which could delay assistance getting to the person that needs it. My colleagues at Mississauga By-law are aware of the concerns and will be conducting additional patrols as needed.

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me via the school and I will get in contact with you as soon as possible.

My co-workers and I would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The bell rings at 8:30 AM and students line up at their appropriate doors to enter the school. If the doors are locked and a student comes through the front foyer then he/she is late and must wait in line for a

LATE SLIP.

Our Kiss n’ Ride in the morning has been improving. We thank all parents who use the drop off program to remember the following:

Have your child(ren) exit the car on the right

(curb) side of the lane. Children exiting into the traffic lane may not be seen by drivers leaving the area. Also parents please do not open car doors into the traffic lane.

Never park or leave your car in the Kiss n’ Ride lane, the traffic lane or beside the garbage dumpster area.

Please drive as far up the lane as you can so that we can fill the lane for drop offs.

Please be considerate of others. Parents please stay in the car.

Have your child ready to go with coats, mitts, hats and backpacks ready to exit the car. Do not exit vehicles to walk with your child to the school doors or park to watch your child.

If you have a child in Kindergarten please let us know if and we will have a helper assist him/her to class.

Parents are always welcome to park in the parking lot or on the street if you would like to spend more time dropping off your child.

PICKING UP YOUR CHILD

Our parking lot is closed at 2:00 each day and is marked with orange pylons. Only School Board,

Day Care, Programs, and Disabled vehicles are allowed to bypass the pylons and enter the parking lot.

Please be mindful that u-turns are not allowed on the street and to observe all parking signs.

Parking in the Fire Lane in front of the school or in the Kiss and Ride Lane may result in a ticket.
