DROPPING OFF AND PICKING UP STUDENTS THE KISS N’ RIDE PROGRAM Please note our school hours below: SCHOOL HOURS 8:30 – School Entry 10:35 – 10:50 – Recess AM 11:30 – 12:30 – Lunch 1:55 – 2:10 – Recess PM 3:00 – Dismissal The City of Mississauga Parking Authorities and the Peel Police have determined that Canadian Martyrs School has one of the most difficult Kiss n’Ride lanes to manage traffic flow due to the location and number of cars. We ask for your help and patience in securing the safe arrival of our students in the morning. Crossing Guards on Duty Central Pkwy & MississaugaValley Blvd. Central Pkwy.& Bloor St. You can help us to keep kids safe by: 8:00-8:30 11:30-11:40/ 12:05-12:30 3:00-3:30 It is very important that students arrive on time to school to avoid disrupting their own and other students’ learning. Please plan to arrive in time to have your child line up with their class in the schoolyard. Students arriving late will be directed to the back entrances of the school and not permitted to enter through the front doors until they are officially late. Students who are late more than once per week may receive a recess detention. Please note that being late means students must sign in at the office and receive a late slip. • Entering the school driveway and Kiss n’ Ride lane one vehicle at a time and not trying to pass others by using the inside lane or cutting in front of school buses. • We empty the lane completely and then fill it up. Please be patient and have your child(ren) ready to exit the car quickly. Please do not exit your vehicle to open the trunk or dress your child(ren). Exit on the curbside only. • Please drive all the way up the lane as far as you can before stopping to let your child(ren) out. Not everyone can park directly in front of the doors or the playground gates. When you stop early you make everyone behind you wait. • Do not park in the lane to walk your child. You are welcome to park in a space if available. Please let us know if you require a KINDER HELPER to escort your child to Kindergarten. • Please do not park in the FIRE LANE at the front of the school or let your child(ren) out at the front even the bell has rung. Students will not be permitted to enter through the office doors until they are “late”. • Please arrive on time and use the Kiss n’ Ride lane when it is supervised. Coming late and letting children out in front of the school is very dangerous. SCHOOL YARD SUPERVISION Please note that staff supervision in the schoolyard begins at 8:15 a.m. If a student is dropped off earlier there is NO SUPERVISION IN THE YARD. Please do not leave your child(ren) unattended in the school yard before staff supervision begins. Students will not be accommodated in the office before 8:15 unless it is an emergency. Please do not send your child in to wait on the bench. Students are supervised throughout the entire lunch hour and both AM and PM recesses. We ask that parents not be in the schoolyard or watching children from the fence or sidewalk at these times as staff on duty can not determine who is a stranger and who is a parent. We appreciate your help keeping our kids safe. Students are dismissed outside at 3:00 PM. Please make sure that your child knows where to go and who to go with after dismissal. Younger students will be handed off directly by the classroom teacher to the pick up person identified by parents. PICKING UP YOUR CHILD Our parking lot is now closing at 2:00 each day and is marked with orange pylons. ONLY Vehicles with disability parking permits may enter. Vehicles will not be permitted to leave the parking lot between 3:00-3:10 PM due to crosswalk traffic. We ask that parents not pick up students early at the end of the day to avoid the after school rush. If your child has an appointment etc. please write a note in the agenda book for the teacher in the morning so that your child will be waiting at the office for you. Calling students during recesses or at the end of the day is difficult as students and teachers may not be near or hear the phone. Please be mindful that u-turns are not allowed on the street and to observe all parking signs. Parking in the Fire Lane in front of the school or in the Kiss and Ride Lane may result in a ticket. 3 IMPORTANT INFORMATION SAFE ARRIVAL PROGRAM BUS INFORMATION PLEASE CALL THE SCHOOL IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT OR LATE Transportation eligibility is determined by a student’s home address. The following website, www.businfo.stopr.ca is available to students, parents/guardians, school administrators, secretaries and school bus operators. Parents/guardians who are eligible for transportation will be able to login to the www.businfo.stopr.ca site and access details of only their child’s transportation arrangements. Please return all bus forms to your child’s teacher as soon as possible. We are requesting your assistance. This system, which allows parents/guardians to call in student absenteeism 24 hours a day, supports our Safe Arrival Program. If both lines into the school are busy, your call is automatically routed to the School Answering System. The office staff picks up the phone messages on a regular basis and will relay messages to staff members. We thank all parents/guardians who continue to call the school when their child(ren) are absent. Your support ensures that our Safe Arrival Program works efficiently to ensure the safety of our students. When we do not receive your call, we are concerned about your child. We then call home, your workplace or an emergency contact number. Please let us know if your telephone numbers change. EMPTY SEAT POLICY If you would like your child to ride the bus and he/she has not been granted a seat due to distance from school or grade you may apply for an empty seat on the bus. Please come to the office for an application form and more information. Please help us to save valuable time and ensure the safety of your child by calling in all absences. Our Attendance Verification Phone number is (905) 275-0094 (Press #1). • When calling, please provide the following: Name of student (first & last, spell the last name) • Name of teacher • Grade • Reason for absence SCHOOL ORGANIZATION Each school year start-up often brings some unexpected changes in terms of enrolment. As a result of families moving out of our school community or registering at our school over the summer, class organization is subject to change within the first few weeks of the school year. Parents/guardians will be notified if any change should involve their child(ren). Your support and cooperation is greatly appreciated. Reorganization day is Sept 18th, 2015. It is important for all students that they arrive on time for school. Students who are late for school are required to report to the office to obtain an Admit Slip prior to going to class. Students who are habitually late may be required to make up the time through detentions at recess or after school. PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY DAY Friday September 18th, 2014 is a Professional Activity Day for staff. There will be no school for students. Staff will be involved in Adult Faith Development and Reorganization of classes if necessary. GOING OUT FOR LUNCH Only Students in Grades 7-8 may leave for lunch. A written note addressed to the classroom teacher must occur each time there is a change in lunch routine. This is especially important for a child who has permission to leave school property during the lunch hour who normally stays for lunch. OPEN HOUSE &BBQ Come on out and join our school community for a delicious BBQ and meet your child’s teacher at the same time. Keep your calendar free for Thursday, Sept 21, at 6:00-8:00 pm. The Fall Scholastic Book Fair will be also be open for students and parents to view! APPONITMENTS ETC. Students leaving or returning to the school due to appointments must be signed out and in at the office by a parent/guardian. Your co-operation and support of this important supervision/safety initiative is appreciated. A written note in your child’s agenda will ensure that he/she is waiting for you in the office when you arrive. SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS Thurs Sept 24h is Photo Day at Canadian Martyrs. Re-takes will be November. Bring your smiles! J Graduation Photos will be on Jan 26th, 2015 Spring Photos will be on April 22nd, 2014 CUSTODY OF CHILDREN STUDENT VERIFICATION FORM & PACKAGE Student verification forms and packages for each child will be sent home this week. All forms (even those with correct information) must be reviewed, signed and returned to the appropriate classroom teacher. Please return all forms and packages, as this will help us update our records. At times, we are faced with situations in which non-custodial parents arrive at school asking to visit their child or to take their child home after school. We are best able to serve and protect students, when we are made aware of legal custody arrangements, visitation rights and other special instructions. If legal custody matters affect your family, please ensure that our office and classroom teachers are aware of custodial arrangements between parents that may affect your child during school hours. Please ensure that a copy of the Court Order is on file in the school office. 4 HEALTH & WELLNESS INFORMATION HEPATITIS B IMMUNIZATION, MENINGOCOCCAL MENINGITIS, HPV ALLERGEN AWARE SCHOOL, PEANUT & OTHER LIFE THREATENING ALLERGIES On November 4, 2015 Peel Health will continue to offer free immunization against Hepatitis B, Meningococcal Meningitis for students in grade 7 and HPV for grade 8 female students during the 2015/2016 school year. Students in grade 7 during the 2015-2016 school year, who did not complete the Hep B series or receive Meningococcal Meningitis can complete the vaccinations in grade 8. Immunization against Hepatitis B, Meningococcal Meningitis, and HPV continues to be voluntary and a parent/legal guardian must authorize immunization for all students under the age of 14 years. January 26th will be the next immunization date. SARINA’S LAW: Sabrina’s Law is an Act to protect anaphylactic students in publicly funded schools in Ontario. Named “Sabrina’s Law” in honor of an Ontario student who died following an anaphylactic reaction in 2003, the law became effective on January 1, 2006. As we begin the new school year, we would like to inform you that Canadian Martyrs is an allergen aware school. There are pupils in attendance at our school who suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe and life threatening reactions. Anaphylaxis is a severe and life threatening allergic reaction. The most common allergen triggers are food, insect stings, medications, exercise and latex. An anaphylactic reaction involves symptoms from two or more body systems. We would appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts or peanut products. We want Canadian Martyrs to be a safe environment for all students. Thank you for your assistance with this initiative. PEDICULOSIS Although not a communicable disease, pediculosis (head lice) is a concern to families and teachers. Each year it is common for outbreaks of pediculosis to occur. Unfortunately, in recent years, head lice have become increasingly common throughout North America. They are parasites, which have been common among human beings for centuries. They are not connected in any way with dirt or neglect. Anyone can be infested with them. If a case of head lice is found, we inform all parents by way of a letter. If cases of head lice are found in a classroom, we shall inform all parents of students in that class. We request that you also check your own children and, if you find them to be infested, we would ask that you let us know. Students are reminded to refrain from sharing hats, especially during the winter months. Any infected student will need to be checked before re-entry to class. STORAGE AND ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION Parents/guardians are responsible for ensuring that all medication and forms are completed and updated annually for any student who requires medication to be administered at school. If your child requires medication, please have the necessary forms completed and return them, along with any medication, to the office as soon as possible. Forms are available at the school office. Region of Peel Dental Screening Dental screening for students in grades JK, SK Grade 2 and Grade 8 will take place on February 17th, 2016. STUDENT INSURANCE As required by the Education Act and Ministry of Education, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information about cost-effective student accident insurance coverage via student carrier, ‘insuremykids Protection Plan’ forms were distributed to students the first week of school. The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board requires parents, guardians written acknowledgement that they have received information regarding Student Insurance especially for those students participating in out-of-school excursions and/or extracurricular sports activities and is indicated on the respective parent permission forms (ref: GF115 Elements of Risk) distributed when students participated in educational excursions. Although enrolment in the student insurance is voluntary, the Board encourages parents to take advantage of the inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if their child/children participate in sports, excursions/field trips, or, if parents do not have dental insurance coverage. Two options are offered for enrolment: 1.) Complete the traditional form and mail it in or 2.) Photocopy the form and fax it to Reliable Life at 1-905-5227211 or 1-800-463-KIDS (5437). Parents alone have the right to insure their children. All medication is stored in the office area. The only exception to this requirement has to do with any child who, because of life threatening allergies, must carry medication. RECYCLING OF EYEGLASSES In the great Catholic spirit of sharing, Canadian Martyrs would like to solicit from the parents/guardians and students of Canadian Martyrs the donation of any unwanted eyeglasses/spectacles to the Lions Club of Mississauga Central, which are given to the less fortunate in Canada and throughout the world. This can be done by bringing the unwanted eyeglasses to Canadian Martyrs Catholic School and placing them in the Lions Eyeglass box located at the front office. 5 FULL DAY KINDERGARTEN HELPFUL PROGRAMS Full Day Kindergarten Canadian Martyrs is looking forward to continuing the Full Day Kindergarten Program. Our Kindergarten Team has been working diligently and we are enthusiastic to begin a new year of wonder, inquiry and Play-Based Learning. PLASP – CHILD CARE SERVICES In the PLASP, Child Care Services Program, children participate in recreational activities, are served a nutritious snack daily and have time for homework For more information on the PLASP, Child Care Services Program, visit our PLASP Director, Argiro Kaplanis at Canadian Martyrs or call the PLASP Head Office at 905-8901711. You can also visit the website at www.plasp.com What is Play-Based Learning? Research has shown that there is a strong link between play and learning for young children. This is especially true in the areas of problem solving, language acquisition, literacy, numeracy, and social, physical, and emotional skills. Young children are naturally curious and actively explore their environment and the world around them through a process of play-based learning. Play is a vital part of a child’s life for optimal development, socially, cognitively, physically, and emotionally. REGION OF PEEL PARENTING & FAMILY LITERACY CENTRE What is the Role of the Teacher and DECE? In the new Full Day Kindergarten program, teachers and Designated Early Childhood Educators will work together in supporting your child’s learning in a play-based environment. Our team promises to support children in their play-based learning by: • providing large blocks of time for both childinitiated and structured play; • guiding, shaping, engaging in , and extending play but not dictating or dominating it; • allowing children to be “in charge” of their play – engaging them in the planning of the learning activities and allowing time for unstructured play; • providing a variety of hands-on, concrete materials, tools, and equipment that encourage children to engage in different forms of play; • changing materials, tools, and equipment as needed, to guide, shape, enhance, and extend learning; • asking questions to expand and enhance play; • observing, monitoring, and assessing play. The Parenting and Family Literacy Centre at Canadian Martyrs is a place where parents/guardians/caregivers and children from infants to six years of age can play and learn together in their local school. The Parenting and Family Literacy Centre offers a variety of fun learning activities for children while engaging parents in their child's learning. Through music, stories and play, babies and children can start to build essential skills, like sharing, early literacy and numeracy, as well as communications skills. The play-based program enhances children’s natural curiosity and desire for exploration while helping them learn. Children can play with each other and become more familiar with the school and its activities. Our Parenting and Family Literacy Centre at Canadian Martyrs will re-open on Tuesday, Sept 8 with our Instructor, Priscilla Lawrence Hours: 8:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. (Monday to Friday) Please sign-in using the book in the front foyer of the school. Whenever possible, reduce that risk by supervising children at and en route to or from, their bus stops. There is simply no substitute for an adult’s vigilance. And please share this information with student passengers; it may one day save a child’s life. CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL School Council Election: It is a pleasure to invite all Parents/Guardians to consider becoming a member of the School Council. Please note that our School Council will be comprised of Parents/Guardians, School Staff and a Parish Representative. If you are interested in becoming a member of the School Council please complete the attached nomination form and return it to the office by Sept. 17th, 2015. ☑ 1. Getting On and Off the Bus • Be at the bus stop before the bus comes. • Wait for the bus at a safe place away from the road. • The bus driver will tell you when to get on. • Always use the hand rail. • Never push or shove. • Take two giant steps away from the bus when getting off. • Walk, don’t run away from the bus. The election (if necessary) will be held on Thursday Sept. 24th.A list of nominees for the election will be sent home on Sept.21st with instructions for voting. If you do not wish to run for a position, you are still always welcome to attend the meetings and offer your thoughts and ideas. We look forward to seeing many Parents/Guardians at our meetings. Our first Council meeting is Wednesday September 30th, 2015 at 6 pm in the library. ☑ 2. On the Bus • Sit facing the driver, feet in front of you. • Keep hands and your head inside the bus. • Keep the aisle clear at all times. • Always follow the bus driver’s instructions. ☑ • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 3. Crossing the Road Always cross the road in front of the bus, never behind. Take at least 10 giant steps in front of the bus. Pass the crossing arm; stop and look at the driver to give you the signal to cross. Walk, never run across the road. Get to the bus stop in plenty of time so you don’t have to run. Wait for your bus in a place that’s away from traffic in the road. Bus stops are not appropriate places to push or wrestle with your friends. Let the bus stop before you try to get on. If you can touch the bus, you’re too close. Remember if you can’t see the bus driver, then the bus driver can’t see you. The driver will let you know when it’s safe to approach the bus. Take the steps one at a time, holding onto the handrail. Go right to a seat, and sit quietly, without blocking the aisle. Listen to your bus driver, and obey any requests. Leave the bus in single file, holding the handrail. Walk away from the bus without running, and never go behind it. If you have to cross the street to leave or board your bus, you need to be 10 giant steps away from the front of the bus. Watch for overhead red lights to flash, and wait for your driver’s signal before crossing. If you ever drop something underneath the bus or in its path, leave it there! Never, never, stop to pick it up. The purpose of Catholic School Council is, through the active participation of Parents/Guardians, to improve student achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to Parents/Guardians. A Catholic School Council’s primary means of achieving its purpose is by making recommendations in accordance with this policy and regulation to the Principal of the school and to the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Also, to help the Principal and the Teachers bring appropriate community resources to the school and to help the Principal and the Teachers ensure that Parents/Guardians recognize and exercise their right to participate in the education of their children. 7 SEPTEMBER – EVERYONE HAS THE RIGHT TO BE SAFE AT SCHOOL PERSONAL ELECTRONIC DEVICES (PEDs) What is a PED? PEDs are wireless and/or portable electronic handheld equipment that include cell phones, smart phones, tablets, walkie-talkies, iPods, MP3 players and digital cameras. It is the policy of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board that PEDs belonging to students and visitors are to be kept out-of-sight, turned off and not used within school premises or during school sanctioned events, such as, retreats, field trips, sports events, etc. To prevent the loss or damage of PEDs, teachers will collect any student PEDs at the start of each day and lock them securely until dismissal. Students are not permitted to keep their PED during the school day. The key message for September is… “Everyone has the right to be safe at school”. Each class will create a set of behavioral guidelines. This activity provides students with an opportunity to identify and discuss their expectations of how to appropriately interact with others. When students feel ownership they tend to assume more responsibility to follow the established guidelines and manage their own behaviors. Students learn about expressing opinions, consensus building and accountability. A sense of safety is established in knowing that all students have agreed to follow the guidelines. By posting the guidelines in the classroom and referring to it throughout the year, peer accountability for behavior management is encouraged. TIPS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS: - talk with your children about the guidelines - ask them which guidelines they like the most and which ones they think will be most difficult for them - discuss behavioral expectations within your own family and the values or beliefs upon which these are based Beautification of the Kindergarten Yard Please come by the school to view our new tree carvings in the Kindergarten yard. These indigenous creatures were carved with a chain saw from of the trunks of old trees that needed to be cut down due to disease. These new little creatures will be keeping an eye on our little ones as they play in our new natural playground. FALL SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR Our Fall Book Fair will be held in the library the week of Sept. 21-25, 2015. The Fair will be open during the school BBQ and Open House. We look forward to raising lots of money to buy books for our school library! 8 F.Y.I. CANADIAN MARTYRS STAFF AS OF SEPT 3 Grade Teacher Room # DECE/FDK DECE/FDK DECE/FDK A. DiDonato/D. Benewiat C.
