At Christ the King School we celebrate…
Black History Month
“I have a dream that my four children will
one day live in a nation where they will not
be judged by the color of their skin but by
the content of their character. I have a
dream today”.
By Martin Luther King
VIRTUES PROGRAM - FEBRUARY
~ RESPECT
This month we will celebrate the virtue of respect.
God has given us the virtue of friends and companions to keep us company and to
help us out along the way.
Every person in our lives carries the Spirit of God - and so every person is our
brother or sister through Jesus Christ.
As brothers and sisters who share one Holy Spirit, we are all valuable to God. We
all deserve to be shown courtesy, consideration, sensitivity and thoughtfulness,
which are different ways of saying respect..
That respect should come first and foremost from ourselves and then we will be
able to respect others. We should be able to expect to be treated with respect by
everyone we meet - our brothers and sisters in Jesus.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at respecting ourselves as
well as respecting those around us.
A respectful person…
Treats himself/herself and everyone else with equal consideration and courtesy
Uses a positive tone of voice and body language
Avoids swearing, name-calling, put-downs, and inappropriate gestures
Says ‘Excuse me’, ‘Please’, ‘Pardon me’
Avoids gossip
* All virtue information has been added to the front pages of your child's
agenda.*
Black History Month
Once again we begin our recognition and celebration of all
‘Black Historians’ and ‘Heroes’
who have touched our lives
throughout history. Our Grade 8
students will be recognizing these honoured individuals sharing a brief synopsis during daily morning announcements. We look forward to being enlightened
as we continue to treasure the individuals who have
graced the pages of history throughout the world!
2015-16 School Year Calendar
Additional Professional Activity Day: Monday, April 11, 2016
Terms of the recent contract settlement between the
teacher federations and the Ministry of Education
included the provision of an additional Professional
Activity Day for the 2015-2016 school year for both
elementary and secondary schools. Recently, boards
were directed to schedule this additional Professional Development Day on or before April 15, 2016.
In the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board,
the designated additional Professional Activity Day
has been scheduled for Monday, April 11, 2016.
Therefore, there will be no classes for either elementary or secondary students on Monday, April
11, 2016.
We offer our sincerest congratulations and bid a fond farewell
to our Head Custodian Mrs.
Anna as she begins her retirement as of February 1,
2016. Anna has been diligently
keeping Christ the King School neat, clean and
healthy for our school community since 1999. We
hope that God blesses her as she embarks upon a
journey filled with family, friends and relaxation.
Please join us in welcoming Mr.
Terry as he takes on his new role
as Head Custodian beginning
Monday, February 1, 2016. Mr.
Terry is well known here at CTK as one of our hardworking evening custodians. We look forward to
seeing him throughout the day and wish him all the
best as he begins this new chapter.
Reconciliation
On Thursday, December 17, 2015 our
Grade 2 students received their Sacrament of First Reconciliation at St.
Francis of Assisi Parish. Thank you to
Mrs. Di Risio, Mrs. Goodman, Mrs.
Carpino-Mongeon and Father Bernard
for preparing our students as they
journey towards their First Holy Com-
February 15 is National
Flag Day
February 15 was declared National
Flag of Canada Day in 1996. It marks the day in 1965
when our red and white maple leaf flag was first
raised over Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and indeed,
hundreds of communities across Canada. Red and
white were designated as Canada's official colours in
1921 by His Majesty King George V.

Clothing in Cold Weather
Children will go outside for recess
and lunch hour, weather permitting. On extremely cold days we
limit the amount of time students
spend outdoors. During morning
announcements, we remind students to wear all winter clothes. Children should come to school with
boots, winter coats, scarves, hats and mittens. As
well, in order to keep their workplace clean, please
ensure your child has a pair of “indoor” shoes. It will
reduce the amount of dirt and mud brought indoors.
This will also assist our custodial staff in keeping our
school clean. Thanks for your continued cooperation.
SNOW AND ICE
Snow is part of our winter life in Canada, providing
both frustration and enjoyment. We all like to play
in it. Throwing snowballs and sliding on ice is fun.
However, snow and ice can be very dangerous. Most
injuries happen during wintertime. For safety reasons, our school rule must be that snow stays on the
ground – no snowballs, kicking snow or any other
activity with snow or ice that could be harmful,
which includes sliding on slopes. Thank you for taking the time to reinforce these safety rules with your
children.
CTK ECO TEAM
On Friday, December 11th, 2015, Mrs. Gizzi's Class and Ms. da Rosa visited Peel’s Integrated Waste Management Facility (PIWMF). Students learned about waste management practices in the education room followed by a bus tour. This eye-opening tour included a view of the waste transfer station, yard waste and
green bin organics processing area, and the material recovery facility (where recyclables are sorted). This trip
was a great experience for us all!
Please remember to continue to drop off old electronics in the green bin located at the front of the school.

Earth Rangers is The Kids’ Conservation
Organization, dedicated to educating children and families about biodiversity and
encouraging them to become directly involved in protecting animals and their
habitats.
Earth Rangers “Bring Back the Wild” Presentation for grade 1
-6 took place on January 28th. The presentation was a dynamic, interactive and multi-media experience that featured LIVE
Animal ambassadors demonstrating their natural behaviors. They used science-based information to educate children
about the importance of protecting biodiversity while highlighting different conservation initiatives across Canada. Students learned about the 4 animal conservation projects that
Eco Rangers are helping this year. The projects are: the Peregrine Falcon, the Wolverine, the Little Brown Bat, and ColdWater Coral.
Thanks to a generous sponsor there is no cost for the presentation.
Gingerbread House Raffle
The winner of the beautifully decorated ginger
bread house was Madison F.
Thank you to K. Muffolini and L. Vieira, and
their students for their amazing creation! All
funds collected will be put back into their
‘cooking’ program.
FRIENDSHIP STRATEGIES
Parents can be helpful in addressing positive
behaviours that will allow their child to
build lasting friendships. Helping children
understand how to treat one another and
how to value and make friends are important, positive steps in eliminating isolating behaviours.
The Top Ten Ways To Keep Your Friends
1. Show them kindness and respect.
2. Stick up for them.
3. Be supportive when your friends need
help and advice.
4. Tell the truth but be kind about it.
5. If you hurt a friend, say you’re sorry.
6. If you make a promise, keep it.
7. Put some effort into your friendships;
otherwise your friends might feel neglected.
8. Don’t try to change your friends; accept
them the way they are.
9. If a friend hurts you and apologizes, accept the apology.
10. Treat your friends the way you want
them to treat you.
