Ms. Maier’s Class Update Dear Parents/Guardians, What We Are Learning… Reader’s Workshop: - Skills: Analyzing - Features of Fiction Writer’s Workshop: - Speech writing - Upcoming: Legends Math - Measurement (choosing an appropriate unit; measuring and recording perimeter; time) - Upcoming: Geometry Unit of Inquiry: Transdisciplinary Theme: How the World Works (properties of matter) Central idea: The properties of materials determine their use and may have an effect on society and the environment. Welcome to 2016! Hope you and your family enjoyed a safe and restful holiday season. Thank you for your support throughout December – with a Virtue assembly, and Christmas concert on the go, it was certainly busy! The class definitely rose to the occasion and did a wonderful job in both performances! The grade 5 students are starting the New Year on the right foot, approaching term 2 with new goals and renewed determination. Before the break, we wrapped up our “Sharing the Planet” unit of inquiry. The grade 5’s demonstrated risk-taking and creativity as they worked to complete their culminating task – developing a model of a working wind turbine. After a few weeks of commitment and hard work, I am very proud to say we had 10 turbines that surpassed expectation and were able to lift more than the required load. Way to go, grade 5’s! Throughout the month of January, we will be working on a new unit of Inquiry: How the World Works. In this unit, we will be exploring the properties of matter, and how our knowledge of matter influences both society and the environment.
