Utah Allows Return of Firing Squad Execution By: Ronni Johnson Utah legislature approved a bill earlier this month to legalize execution by firing squad if the state does not have access to drugs for lethal injections. Previously in 2004, legislature had repealed the use of firing squads to carry out the death penalty. However, since 1976, only three inmates have been executed in this manner. The need for this occurred after many pharmaceutical companies quit carrying the drug used during lethal injection, causing a scramble in 32 states to find new suppliers.
