Utah Allows Return of
Firing Squad Execution
By: Ronni Johnson
Utah legislature approved a bill earlier this month to
legalize execution by firing squad if the state does not have
access to drugs for lethal injections. Previously in 2004,
legislature had repealed the use of firing squads to carry out
the death penalty. However, since 1976, only three inmates
have been executed in this manner. The need for this
occurred after many pharmaceutical companies quit
carrying the drug used during lethal injection, causing a
scramble in 32 states to find new suppliers.

Considering the recent act past by Utah
legislature legalizing the use of a firing squad
while carrying out the death penalty, defend,
refute, or qualify whether the death penalty
should ever be an option when convicting a
person of a crime.
