Iona Catholic Secondary School Academic Resource Department Course Code: GLE 301/401 (student must have recommendation of principal) Course Name: Advanced Learning Strategies : Skills for Success After Secondary School Grade 11/12 Course Overview: This course improves students’ learning and personal-management skills, preparing them to make successful transitions to work, training, and or postsecondary education destinations. Students will assess their learning abilities and use literacy, research skills and personal-management techniques to maximize their learning. Students will develop a plan to help them meet their learning and career goals. Strands of Study and Overall Expectations include: OVERALL EXPECTATIONS Evaluate learning, personal management, and interpersonal skills and strategies that contribute to success in various settings. Apply appropriate literacy skills and strategies to support learning and planning for postsecondary choices. Analyze their learning skills and styles to determine their learning strengths and needs, and develop strategies to maximize their learning while in secondary school and throughout their lives. Apply research and career-exploration strategies to identify postsecondary options SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS: 1. Learning and Thinking Strategies: Identify and apply appropriate strategies for improving concentration, memory, test-taking, reading skills, and study skills. demonstrate effective use of technology(eg. Computers for word processing, assistive technology programs such as Kurzweil 3000, Inspiration, Smart Ideas, Text Help, Dragon Naturally Speaking) to enhance research, learning and presentation skills. 2. Personal Management Skills: Evaluate personal-management skills, habits and characteristics, and identify those most in need of improvement. Demonstrate effective use of strategies for improving their personal management skills. 3. Exploration of Opportunities Locate, select and summarize relevant educational and career information from a variety of sources based on their personal interests and abilities Describe the knowledge, talents and skills required for success in selected occupations 4. There is no final exam in this course. Emphasis is on completion of daily work, tests, and assignments, use of class time, daily log journals, and culminating activities. Therefore, completing all work and using time effectively are important components for success. ATTENDANCE It is the responsibility of each student to be punctual and in attendance, with proper materials. Students who miss classes may put their credit in jeopardy. It is the student’s responsibility to catch up on missed work when absent.
