Course Name: Learning Strategies 1: Skills for Success in Secondary School Grade
9/10
Course Overview: This course focuses on learning strategies which help students
become better, more independent learners. Students will learn how to develop and
apply literacy skills, personal management skills, and interpersonal and team work
skills to improve their learning and achievement in school. This course helps students
build confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities for success in secondary school
and beyond.

Identify and use a variety of literacy skills and strategies to improve reading, writing,
and oral communication in everyday contexts
Demonstrate an understanding of learning skills and strategies required for success in
school
Apply knowledge of their personal skills and learning strengths to develop strategies
for success in secondary school
Identify and describe personal-management skills required for success, and explain
their use to help maximize learning
Demonstrate the use of personal-management skills required to enhance learning
Identify and describe the knowledge and skills necessary for successful interpersonal
relations and teamwork
SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS:
1. Learning Skills:
 demonstrate effective use of study skills and test preparations
 select and use strategies to improve performance in school(taking notes, using an
agenda, using memory strategies)
 identify school and community resources(eg. Library, the Internet, guidance office,
Academic Resource) and explain how they can be used to support their learning needs
 demonstrate effective use of technology(eg. Computers for word processing, assistive
technology programs such as Kurzweil 3000, Inspiration, Smart Ideas, Text Help,
Dragon Naturally Speaking) to enhance research, learning and presentation skills.
2. Personal Knowledge and Management Skills:
 Create a personal profile of their competencies and interests, and explain how these
affect their attitude towards learning
 Identify their learning styles, personal qualities, and learning challenges by analyzing
their past experiences, both successful and unsuccessful
 Identify their personal-management skills and describe how they affect learning
performance
3. Interpersonal Knowledge and Skills:
 Identify and describe positive teamwork skills used in different learning environments
 Describe how interpersonal and teamwork skills can promote achievement of
individual learning goals
4. Literacy:
 Identify and use a variety of reading skills and strategies to improve understanding of
text
 Use appropriate forms of writing to suit the audience and purpose
 Identify and use a variety of strategies to improve writing


Learning skills will be evaluated on an ongoing basis and assigned a qualitative
mark of E, G, S or N.
There is no final exam in this course. Emphasis is on completion of daily work, tests, and
assignments, use of class time, daily log journals, and culminating activities. Therefore,
completing all work and using time effectively are important components for success.
ATTENDANCE It is the responsibility of each student to be punctual and in attendance, with proper
materials. Students who miss classes may put their credit in jeopardy. It is the student’s
responsibility to catch up on missed work when absent.
