Follow us on Twitter @DANCEIONA Iona Dance Program ProProProgram Iona Catholic Secondary Regional Arts Program Dance Program Overview Iona’s dance program focuses on developing the technique, creativity and artistry of each student. The dance curriculum is developed around Classical Ballet (R.A.D) and Modern, Jazz, and Contemporary Dance. The first semester’s focus is on building technique and finding the students personal voice through creation and composition. Second semester will continue to build on the technique and skill established in semester one, along with accenting performance and presentation skills. Dance theory is Field Trips embedded throughout both semesters and includes the study of anatomy, injury care and prevention, nutrition, history, analysis and critique. This 4-year program is designed to help students acquire essential skills such as leadership, discipline, creativity and cooperation as well as the necessary skills to peruse a successful transition to life after high school. In addition to this, students will develop an appreciation for their Catholic faith though the dance class along with embodying the Catholic Social Teachings and Beatitudes through dance. Students will study technique, increase precision, strength, control, speed, flexibility, memory, musicality personal style and vocabulary of dance steps. Although the majority of time in class will be spent dancing, there will also be instruction in the history, composition, and analysis. Tools of assessment include assignments, presentations, reflective reports, performance tasks and theory tests. Practical unit tests in technique will be given and evaluations of composition and performance work as well. This course gives students the opportunity to explore their technical and compositional skills by applying the elements of dance and the tools of composition in a variety of performance situations. Students will generate movement through improvisation, demonstrate an understanding of safe practices with regard to themselves and others in the dance environment, and identify the function and significance of dance within the global community. Prerequisite: Audition/Workshop “Let them praise his name by dancing” ~Psalm 149:3 Performance Practice, Grade 9 - ATP1OP Grade 9 Performance Practice develops a foundation of Performance. Solo: Students will perform a 1-2 min solo in any dance style. Students should choose a dance that best demonstrates their passion and ability for dance. Students must bring there own music which can be in CD or MP3 format. Interview: The interview will consist of questions that are designed to give prospective students a chance to explain their interest, motivation and dedication to Iona’s Dance Program. This interview will also give the prospective student a chance to ask questions about the practical or theoretical components of the program Female Attire: Female dancers are asked to wear a black body suit with black footless tights, leggings or shorts. Jazz shoes, ballet shoes, foot paws or bare feet are acceptable. Hair should be pulled back in a neat ponytail. Male Attire: Male dancers are asked to wear a Black solid coloured Tshirt and black footless tights or shorts. Jazz shoes, ballet shoes, foot paws or bare feet are acceptable
