Reading Fundamentals •Connecting Common Core Standards through interactive read-aloud where strategies are modeled. High interest texts at student’s guided reading level is used to practice and apply independent reading. •Student will keep reading logs and notebooks. Social Studies • Illinois- history, people, land, animals, explorers • Map skills unit • Branches of government ( Illinois and federal) • Chicagoland and unique features of Illinois Science • Physical science – 3 states of matter, light, and properties • Earth science – the sun, moon, and earth and how they are connected • Life science – How living things are affected by their environments Assignment Notebooks • Each student is required to use the assignment notebook daily in order to develop consistent habits • Assignments are written down throughout the day, and reviewed at the end of the day • Please ask to see it daily and initial at the bottom Homework Red Home folder Homework • Purpose is practice of learned skills, developing good habits, and building stamina • Students will keep a reading log with an expectation of 400 minutes a month • Essential to grow as a reader •Can be independent, or shared reading •Discuss your child’s reading with them What happens when I am absent? When you are absent… • Attendance is very important! • Homework may be requested after a child is absent for 2 days •District policy is that a child completes work when they return •Please do not ask for work in advance Late work Student will get a note in assignment Notebook Chronic late work will require a parent conference • Positive classroom environment • School-wide program for promoting good character So, what do you do, Ms. Fischer, when my child makes poor choices or has unacceptable behavior ? Focus on the Positive! • Redirect student with body language such a looking student in the eye, moving closer to the child, saying child’s name, giving a redirect of what the work expectation is. • Talk privately to the student, “I see you are having trouble staying focused. Is there some way I can help you get back on track?” • Give a consequence warning. • Chronic behavior or effort problems, I will contact you and ask you to come in for a conference.
