Dear Parents,
Here’s an update of learning in Room 20!!!!
Reading: We are learning about different types of figurative language; similes,
metaphors and personification and locating examples in fiction texts. We continue
to work on our “cube” book report, finishing it next week.
Math: We are working on finding area of rectangles using the formula A=LxW.
They also learned about the Distributive Property of Multiplication to help finding
area of rectangles. Problem solving and fact practice is ongoing. Next week, I will
begin PARCC practice with the class!
Spelling: We took a spelling test today. Monday your child will bring home new
words. (Your child will work with these words for two weeks).
Writing: We have begun informational (formerly expository) writing. We continue
to learn the correct formation of the lower case cursive letters. We will be
learning about adverbs while reviewing adjectives.
Science: We started Chapter 3 in Earth Science. The students’ also wrote about
their field trip experience to the Adler Planetarium along with an illustration. They
were very creative with this assignment. These are hanging in the hallway and look
great!!!!
Social Emotional Learning: We have begun our unit on “Assertiveness”. I will
continue to explore the factors that allow students to develop assertive behavior
and present techniques for developing such a behavior. Students will learn that
assertive behavior is standing up for rights and stating needs, wants and opinions,
while respecting others’ rights; being honest and direct but appropriate. I will read
a story about a famous baseball player, Hank Aaron, and how he became assertive
in his sport and in dealing with people.
