Dear Parents, Here is an update of learning in Room 20!!!!!!! Reading: We have been working on our biography reports – notecards and rough drafts for essays. Some students are bringing their essays home tonight to begin working on their final copy. As a third grade team we decided to give the students the option to either print, type or write in cursive – for their final copy. They have been working very hard on this project. They read the book, used post-it notes to make locating information for notecards easier and learned about their person. I have read over the rough drafts of their essay before I send them home for them to write or type their final copy. I did not change the meaning of what they wrote unless it did not make sense – they went back and rewrote that part again. Reminder: The decorated cans and final copy are due on Monday, May 2nd! Math: Everyone continues to make good progress in their small math groups. I also continue to work with every group daily – I instruct them on a given lesson and they practice in their groups. The next day when they return we go over what they learned the previous day and then they learn another new concept. We learned about pyramids and prisms as well as finding equivalent fractions using number lines. Our last PARCC test in math is tomorrow afternoon!!!!!! Spelling: No spelling again this week as I continue to work on grammar skills! We are learning about prefixes, suffixes and base/root words. They know the meanings of specific prefixes: un, re, mis, pre and specific suffixes; ful, less, er, est. We have also talked about run on sentences and subject verb agreement. Writing: We have been practicing our writing strategies through our biography reports. Science: I explained the “Poster Project” to your child today. They picked their animal today and began finding facts about their animal’s adaptations. They need to include at least four adaptations for their animal. Some students want to find pictures of their animal and print them out for their poster – that is something they can do at home. The writing of all four adaptations will all be completed in class. Social Emotional Learning: We learned how to say and to write an “I” message to someone when we get upset with them. They did a nice job with this and some are applying it in class. Sorry this was not sent out last Friday! I had PARCC testing Friday and it messed up my schedule! Important Dates: April 29th – Variety Show May 5th – Open House
